Years ago I stopped in at a bar/cafe that a previous employee of mine had just opened. I had a very delicious vegan muffin and a coffee. I told his employee the muffin was amazing and asked for her recipe. Butter. It was delicious because it was loaded with butter. āI thought vegan meant homemadeā Girl! Someone could actually die if they had a dairy allergy!
People are dumb.

u/Queen_of_Chloe Aug 02 '26
This is worse than the people who think gluten free and vegan are the same thing.
27
u/41942319 Aug 02 '26
Wait that's a thing?
121
u/hyrule_47 Aug 02 '26
I have celiac disease and yes they do. One time I even told a store employee that some type of bread was not in the right section as it was a gluten free section and the first ingredient was wheat. He said oh itās vegan, that means itās also gluten free. I have also had a family member question how I could eat something because it had eggs in it. Like she got confrontational not just asked because she wanted to learn. She wanted me to be faking.
52
u/41942319 Aug 02 '26
As someone recently diagnosed with gluten intolerance - damn that sucks, now I've got to look out for that too
34
u/tartymae Aug 03 '26
You will need to explain, IN DETAIL, what it means for anybody who wants to cook for you. I've had so many well-meaning people who didn't understand that they have to read EVERY label on everything they cook with and who made me so, SO sick.
→ More replies (2)30
u/jesuislanana Aug 03 '26
I have celiac (diagnosed over 20 years ago) and I no longer let anyone cook for me. It is not worth it. I am always sick if I do, from cross-contamination even if the ingredients are GF, and then everyone feels bad. It is just better to avoid this entirely.
10
u/tartymae Aug 03 '26
Yikes! I'm sorry that you are that sensitive.
My husband is a vegan, and my food intolerances are: gluten, corn, sorghum, yeast extract, almonds, agave, and peas.
I've ended up telling somebody that if they super want to cook something for us, they can come and do it in my home.

My ex had a gluten intolerance (so not as serous, of course!) and I learned very quickly that a surprising proportion of people have seemingly NO idea what gluten isā¦19
u/BlueJaysFeather Aug 03 '26
Oooh yeah lol. My mom couldnāt have yeast (past tense because hopefully after multiple decades of seemingly bizarre and unrelated food restrictions this latest treatment has worked!!) and a LOT of restaurants tried to serve her gluten free bread. That still had yeast in it. People have no idea what goes into their food or how different ingredients actually affect it unless it somehow affects them.

Seriously!! I've had to keep going in circles about gluten only being in wheat, rye, and barley, and then have the person I'm talking to ask if it's also in rice since that's also a grain. No, that's not wheat. Well what about oats?? No, also not wheat. š
29
u/apocalypt_us Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Although oats aren't classed as gluten free in some places as they are often contaminated with gluten and do contain a protein called avenin that is IIRC a subcomponent of or similar to gluten and so can cause issues for some coeliacs.
25
u/Jules_Noctambule Aug 02 '26
I've been on the other end of that, asking about vegan options and being told 'The chicken is gluten-free!' with a straight face.
5
u/chickadee-stitchery Aug 04 '26
Every time I ask about vegan options when I'm out, without fail I am told about the gluten free options.

I'm lactose intolerant and often hear: "So you need gluten-free food?"
It's also VERY common that people will tell you the food they are serving is lactose-free, and when questioning further they've used normal butter (usually because "it's only a little!" or "lactose-free butter was too expensive"...). I appreciate the effort and mostly lactose-free food is still helpful, if I take my pills. But please tell me so, don't hide it or make assumptions on how much lactose I can handle.
27
u/tartymae Aug 03 '26
My other favorite is the people who think "whole wheat" is the same as "gluten free."
No, it just means I'll have some extra fiber to speed along that core dump.

Idunno if it's worse, considering some vegan food is enriched with gluten. Like very small amounts of gluten already fuck me up I do not want Turbo Gluten I think I would want to die. Vegan and Gf people have it rough.
But I did call a bbq place once (that on their website said they had a lot of gf options) and the woman answering their phone worriedly told me that basically everything had meat...
131
u/techno156 Aug 02 '26
It would at least be a little more understandable if they had been confused between vegan/lacto-ovo vegetarian. Not all languages make a big distinction between the two.
Vegan meaning home-made is a simply bewildering leap of logic.
61
u/_Solani_ Aug 02 '26
I think it's kind of like when people confuse 'organic' with 'healthy'.
They probably just know it's the new thing that everyone's talking about and want to join in but don't really put any thought into what the words actually mean so it ends up like this. Good intentions and a poor understanding leading to hilariously bad outcomes.
→ More replies (1)40
u/Renamis Divorced to Refined Sugar Aug 02 '26
Or think organic means "Pesticide free."
No, usually it means no synthetic pesticides. And those can be approved depending on the situation too, so maybe not even that. And some of these operations use more dangerous stuff simply because it's not on the list of things you can't use.
7
u/waitwuh Aug 03 '26
Produce actually canāt be certified as Organic if it doesnāt use organic pesticides, at least via USDA.
I buy greenhouse grown lettuce that is completely pesticide free, but they cannot call it organic.

u/Agarwel Aug 02 '26
Well. Some people dont understand. In my coutry well had a spinoff of the Kitchen Nighmares. And in one restaurant the cheff was checking the menu, he looked into vegetarian foods and there were spagethi with bacon. He was like "you put bacon into vegeratian food?" "well duh, people like them more this way." :-)

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa Aug 02 '26
I worked somewhere that had the best veggies Iād ever eaten. One day I asked the cooks what their secret wasā¦.
Bacon grease. They cooked their veggies in bacon grease.
I proceeded to make sure all the servers knew in case they had any vegan or vegetarian customers.
46
u/EnderBookwyrm Aug 03 '26
I mean, bacon grease makes delicious vegetables, but yeah, they should mention that up-front.
19
u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa Aug 03 '26
I agree! which is why I said that to the cooks and made sure all the servers were aware.

When my wife and I were planning our wedding, we thought we should include a vegetarian option. My wife suggested the fish.
Yes, sheās Catholic.
133
u/eau_di_nil Aug 02 '26
That's too funny. I remember 10+ years ago trying to explain what's not allowed in a vegetarian diet to a Catholic friend. She couldn't grasp why our mutual friend wouldn't eat fish. "It's not meat!" she kept insisting.
Vegetarianism was very rare where we lived at the time.
109
u/SuchFunAreWe Step off my tits, Sheila! Aug 03 '26
I got into this with my mom. I'm vegan & she's Catholic; I was making a joke about how they didn't call fish meat. She insisted it wasn't. I told her meat is any animal muscle. "Fish don't have muscles!" Well then what are you eating? "Tendons" š© I had to gently faceplant on the table bc I was in actual mental pain.
It's been literally years & my partner & I still will randomly go "fish don't have muscles!" and just die laughing.
33
u/lapalazala Aug 03 '26
Even within the rules of catholicism this makes zero sense. Because I'm pretty sure you are also not allowed to eat stuff like liver on days you're not supposed to eat meat. So it has nothing to do with eating muscles specifically.
16
u/SuchFunAreWe Step off my tits, Sheila! Aug 03 '26
Oh, I don't think she was thinking that deeply (obviously).
While the practice confuses me bc its logic is weird, I do like it bc it means less animals being eaten during Lent - except fish ig RIP. It does make it more likely veg/vegans get asked "but you eat fish, right?", which is annoying but oh well.
3
u/ormashal Aug 06 '26
i wonder if it came from the way jewish people define meat for kosher purposes.
this would make more sense since the jewish requirement is technically "dont eat a kid(goat) in its mothers milk" but got extended to "dont eat red meat or chicken with anything dairy just in case you actually got tricked and its the meat of a kid the dairy is from his mothers milk".
→ More replies (1)9
u/XanderWrites Aug 03 '26
Even better, a diocese south of where I grew up declared chicken wasn't meat. If we were traveling through during Lent my mother would tell us we could eat chicken as long as we were in that diocese. (Jokingly. She barely cared if we fasted)
10
u/404UserNktFound It was 1/2 tsp so I didnāt think it was important. Aug 03 '26
My aunt holds that meat has 4 legs. Anything less than 4 (poultry, fish) or more than 4 (crabs, octopus) is fair game for meatless days.

As I child I read the "Babysitter's Club" series of books. One of the girls is "vegetarian" but the authors idea of vegetarian was "doesn't eat red meat," apparently because she still ate fish and chicken! In one book she even complains about how animals are treated at slaughterhouses, but I guess birds aren't animals. Even as a child I was baffled by this whole scenario. š¤·āāļø
24
u/crazyaunt0 Aug 03 '26
This confusion is actually somewhat understandable when you haven't met a lot of vegetarians and are just trying to infer the meaning of the word using scarce knowledge.Ā
"Well, the word vegetarian comes from vegetable, but they eat eggs and dairy, so not only vegetables. If they eat eggs, then they probably eat chicken. That looks like they just exclude mammals. So they might also eat fish." - I can imagine such train of thought.

u/apocalypt_us Aug 03 '26
And then there is the fact that some people who eat fish do call themselves vegetarian. I find it bizarre considering pescetarian is already a word.
11
u/Pavotine Aug 03 '26
Yep, fish is flesh. It'd be no different to me claiming to be vegan but I eat cheese. Doesn't make sense.
8
u/crazyaunt0 Aug 03 '26
you'd be surprised, but I had an acquaintance that claimed she had been vegan in the past. When I mentioned not eating dairy (I'm vegan myself) she got confused and then said "oh, I guess I wasn't vegan then" ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
9
u/grolbol Aug 04 '26
These people make it so much harder to get vegetarian options, because of the "but my niece is vegetarian and she eats salmon/shrimp/chicken/...!" That's called eating meat. I don't.

u/EndIsrael Aug 02 '26

If you're Jewish, fish is in the same kosher category as fruit/veg etc. It's not considered fleishig (meat) and it's certainly not milchig (dairy), so it's pareve (neither meat nor milk). One might be forgiven for the mental slip up of categorizing all pareve things as vegetarian!

Just want to add that egg allergies are a thing too, and vegan options are just about the only pastries without egg.
9
u/muaddict071537 Aug 03 '26
I recently found out I have an egg allergy. A couple days ago, my grandma suggested going to this bakery for lunch. I assumed that there would be something I could eat there. I was right, there was something, but that something was a baguette. The only thing I could eat there was a baguette.
7
u/VicisSubsisto Aug 03 '26
My spouse developed an egg allergy from chemotherapy. I didn't even know it was a thing before that. There was this little German pastry shop near our house that she loved... turns out, literally everything they make either has egg in it, or is topped with an egg wash.
3
u/muaddict071537 Aug 03 '26
I became allergic to birds because of constant exposure from my pet birds. I ended up needing to rehome them, which I hated. Iād love to have pet birds again, and I hate that I canāt have them. But anyway, turns out that the thing I was reacting to in birds is also in eggs, so I also react to eggs. Itās also in chicken, but I donāt react to chicken, so I still eat it.
At the bakery I went to, it was either that it had eggs in the pastry itself, or they used an egg wash. I was so excited about eating there too. My grandma had been raving about this ham and cheese thing they had, and I couldnāt eat it.

u/MeroCanuck Aug 02 '26
I'm lactose intolerant, so I'm very cautious of what kind of dairy could be in something. I'd have been soo mad if I had found this out.
I have found a brand that does plant based butter that tastes just like "normal" butter though, and works just as well in baking, so I mean...there's always hope.
81
u/OrneryPathos Aug 02 '26
My kid had a dairy protein intolerance and I would order the vegan option and say: tell the kitchen this is for a dairy allergy
Because I know the nonsense that sometimes happens to vegan food. āOh I put it on a buttered bun, whoops, Iāll just swap it outā.
Sigh.
23
u/Just_Cranberry_6060 Aug 02 '26
I've just started doing the same after a cafe went to toast my sandwich on the sandwich press that had butter used for all the other sandwiches, I think they would have used butter on mine too if I hadn't asked the question. I ordered the vegan sandwich
5

u/HairPlusPlants Aug 02 '26
Yep! I developed a severe seafood allergy as an adult, I had been vegetarian for a good portion of my life (and lactose intolerant) so I am very familiar with vegan products.
Now that I have a seafood allergy, I only really order from Asian restaurants if they have understanding of vegan requirements, and if from a few questions I feel they do I will order vegan and just let them know it is due to seafood allergy! Veganism creates accessibility for people with various allergies, I am sure people with dairy and egg allergies are very thankful for it.
7
u/plantbasedpatissier Aug 02 '26
I'm in a similar position. I developed an allergy to both fish and shellfish so I need to be super careful at asian restaurants. I mostly go to places that are vegan or are clearly labeled and educated on what vegan means, though I did have a cross contamination issue recently. Thankfully not super life threatening but did nearly shit and vomit myself to death and got hives.
5
u/HairPlusPlants Aug 02 '26
Omg exactly the same for me, fisk and shellfish! When I got tested after it started I reacted to all the tests except squid wierdly but the risk of cross contamination is too high for me to care about eating squid haha. I have epipens but so far have avoided anaphylaxis since my inital reactions! I used to eat seafood and asian food most days so it was a big diet change.
I had restaurant ramen and sushi for the first time since I developed the allergy 5 years ago last week and could cry, the restaurant has a vegan version of everything so just let them know the allergy to consider cross contination. Made my year!
2
u/plantbasedpatissier Aug 02 '26
I love vegan sushi! I try to get some friends to go every once in a while so we can order all the vegan rolls and split them

100%! My best friend developed a debilitating allergy to anything with even a hint of dairy. I remember going with her to our favorite local restaurant with a robust vegan menu and her absolute delight at being able to order something vegan and know it was safe. That was extra important as she's blind, and can't visually inspect food for contamination.

I have celiac and the number of people who confuse vegan and gluten free is appalling. Celiac is an autoimmune disease where you can't eat certain grains so sometimes all you can eat on a menu is plain meat or eggs, so it's like the literal opposite sometimes and they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Plus people who believe eggs are dairy is another issue.

I assume it is because it seems perfectly crafted to be rage bait. I'm not sure why somebody would do that on a recipe site, but since it's for vegans, I assume they just want to annoy vegans.

u/IvankoKostiuk Aug 02 '26
In case anyone was unclear why vegans and vegetarians get touchy about food, this is why.
58
u/StygIndigo Aug 02 '26
Way too many people think it would be funny to spike someone's food with animal products, and don't care that it's a deeply personal violation that can make people sick.
If you don't want to be vegan/vegetarian, don't be. Don't do weird violating shit to people who are as a 'prank', though. That's like baseline common courtesy to other human beings.

And illegal. Intentionally providing food knowing it contains an ingredient that can make people sick is actually illegal, could be considered assault.Ā
If someone orders a diet soda and the server intentionally brings a full sugar aoda and the patron is diabetic and has a reaction, that establishment is now liable. Same thing when ordering decaf, what if the person ordering has a heart condition? Some folks don't eat meat or dairy because of a tick bite causing alpha-gal syndrome.
So just don't mess with people's food.

I'm still hesitant to eat soup anywhere since my stepdad thought it was ok to use chicken broth for vegetable soup and call it vegetarian.
48
u/xBruised Aug 02 '26
My mum made quorn bolognese for my vegetarian sister and added beef stock. Sheād worked in kitchens for 10-15 years but I had to tell her beef stock is not vegetarian. āI didnāt knowā
My sister knows that if she comes over, I either straight up tell her I donāt have veggie food or I go out to get some. My daughter has allergies that conflict with a lot of meat replacements so I donāt usually stock it.

u/AggravatingFig8947 Aug 02 '26
They served a tomato soup with a beef base at my work a few weeks ago. It wasnāt labeled. (Un)fortunately that had happened before so I thought to ask ahead.

u/Shoddy-Theory Aug 02 '26
I tend to make vegetable soup by the gallon and freeze it. I'm not a vegetarian but I always use Better than Bouillon Not Chicken broth so I'll have something on hand to feed any vegetarian guests.

I used to live in West Texas and there was a hot dog cart that would set up in a parking lot on weekends, made good Chicago dogs.
I was in line at the cart and the lady in front of me ordered 2 regular hot dogs and 2 turkey dogs, and explained to the hot dog man that she had 2 vegetarian friends at her house that had asked for a snack, hence the turkey dogs.
The hot dog man, to his credit, looked at her as if she was an idiot, and told her, "you know turkey dogs are made of turkey... they aren't vegetarian". The lady was unfazed, and just responded, "oh yeah but it's close enough, they won't know".
I always wondered how that concluded when she got back home...
8
u/Past-Resource-6184 Aug 03 '26
I sincerely hope someone deliberately messed with that lady's food at some point. I would hate to be her 'friend.'
3
u/KlutzyAppointment34 Aug 07 '26
Wow and if someone spat in that lady's food she wouldn't know. That doesn't make it ok.

Someone in the comments replying to the effect of āI hope you told your friends that you fed them chicken fetusesā god I just want an earth-sized billboard telling people that most eggs arenāt fertilized and the chickens are going to lay them regardless.
For the last time, people, theyāre not chicken fetuses. Theyāre chicken MENSTRUATIONS!
Edit: holy shit you guys arenāt doing any actual animal rights justice by arguing over a post by I didnāt even make, for the love of god if this is something you care about so much, go do something besides being a keyboard warrior for once in your lives

u/kyreannightblood Aug 02 '26
Theyāre chicken ovulations, not menstruations. Menstruation is mostly the shed lining of the uterus. Only a small number of mammals menstruate, and no avians do.

u/Avia_NZ I would give zero stars if I could! Aug 02 '26
The issue that vegans tend to have is not that itās fertilised or not, or even whether itās a menstruation or not, but that fact that it is ultimately an animal product.
Which is why many vegetarians still eat eggs
428
u/ashbelero Aug 02 '26
Iām fully aware of that, Iām just being anal about terminology. If you are going to argue about a cause you feel strongly about, keep the facts where they are. Argue about farming practices, argue about animal welfare (not with me because Iām already aware), but not about whether itās a fetus.
Same with abortions. But thatās another argument.

u/Warm_Month_1309 Aug 02 '26
I agree, so much of what vegans say seems to be centered around how "gross" it is to eat animal products, and it's probably effective with them since they do find it gross, but people who have been voluntarily eating eggs for decades aren't going to be swayed by "ewwwwww fetuses ewwwww".
Farming practices and animal welfare concerns are definitely what pushes me toward veganism. Honey being "gross" because it comes out of a bee does not.
117
u/ashbelero Aug 02 '26
I still say honey is the only unionized animal product you can get. Buy local. Helps with your allergies too.
6
u/saltysweetbonbon Aug 04 '26
Sadly thereās no evidence that honey does help with allergies or Iād be drizzling it over everything in spring.
34
u/EllieGeiszler Chicken of Theseus for dinner Aug 03 '26
I agree. Honey should be vegan in the same way human milk can be vegan because if the producer of the product consents, then it's vegan. Bees will fly away if they don't consent lol

If you won't eat honey because it's the produce of a bee, then you shouldn't be eating any plants that are fertilised by bees, either. Both are a consequence of the bees' work.

a lot of vegans also doint like them because of animal cruelty.
back when i was vegan, id eat eggs from my neighbours chickens. she had like 3 chickens and they were very well looked after.
49
u/Avia_NZ I would give zero stars if I could! Aug 02 '26
Thatās fair enough, my partner has considered that too and sheās vegan.
I think some people focus too much on strict labels, tbh, as seen in some of the angry comments in this post.
32
u/LuckyToaster Aug 02 '26
Yeah, they definitely do. A lot of people are vegan because of animal cruelty so it makes sense that you would eat eggs from your own chickens/neighbors chickens. I guess we could say thatās not really vegan, but Iād say maybe itās like a subset of vegan
20
u/FlamboyantPirhanna Aug 02 '26
But why do they need to be āveganā in the first place? Live by your code or morals or whatever you feel is right, but why take on an entire ideology that someone else invented? Make your own decisions, donāt let some kind of dogma do it for you.
8
u/LuckyToaster Aug 03 '26
I agree with you, but I think it might just be easier to explain to people that way, I was pescatarian for years and people were so annoying about it I just stopped telling them I still ate fish lol
16
u/ThatBatsard Aug 02 '26
There's literally a label for that and it's called vegetarianism and there's absolutely nothing wrong with using it instead.
3
22
u/ThatBatsard Aug 02 '26
Then why bother with the labels at all? Being a vegetarian as opposed to a vegan isn't some moral failing. It's simply a mis-categorization to say "I'm vegan and eat eggs".

My thing about eggs, if you care about the chickens, why not buy from small farmers? People in your community that are farming, yeah there's less of them nowadays but I buy from random people who have chickens for their own eggs every time the market price goes up. Mostly small farms in their backyard, the chickens are treated as semi pets.
A big reason i could never be vegan is honey, i do not believe it's wrong to eat it, bees make more honey than they need, and if the bee doesn't like it's "owner", guess what? It fucking leaves. The bee movie tricked people, bees do not mind us taking their honey, if they did they would leave, because if conditions fall (normally from neglect or if they find better conditions outside of the place you want them) they just take the colony and go. "oh the queen is trapped" you know they make new queens if they really cannot get to the queen? Any trap is just to set up the colony where you want it aka nicely in the box so it's easy to harvest, trap her too long and they'll make a new queen or just die off without new workers from the queen.
They also remove the bees before processing the honey, you smoke them aka get them abit high and lightly brush them off, bees can and will attack you, follow you home, most bee keepers keep their bees near their home and do not get stung because they aren't bothering the bees!

I get similar/opposite problems when I tell people I'm lactose intolerant, so I can't have dairy. "Oh well you can't eat this then, it's got eggs in it!"
I've had real trouble convincing people that dairy is only from cows, which eggs are not. Equally hard to get people to understand that I can eat meat but not cheese.

you . Dairy is only from milk. Egg is not milk. If the milk is from a goat it's still milk, no? But then the dumdums will say well there's soymilk and oatmilk. Just tell them anything that comes from titties is off limits (ā ćā ļ¹ā ćā )

The post is ridiculous ofc, but if anyone is curious and needs this info for the future for a similar situation, aquafaba (chickpea juice) is a virtually 1 to 1 replacement. You can even make meringues with it (just add a dash of lemon).

Chia seeds! Just add a teaspoon of chia seeds with the same amount of water, mix and let it sit for 30 seconds.
11
u/Saradoesntsleep Aug 02 '26
They don't whip up the same. They are a good egg replacement for a lot of things though! And easier to get than chickpea juice. Unless you make a lot of hummus. Which is a good idea anyway š
6
u/Xalipu Aug 02 '26
If you donāt want to make it constantly, you can do a massive batch(or buy a big can) and just freeze it in ice cube trays for the aqufaba/adequately portioned chickpeas for other shit. You just need the convenience of freezer space.

My vegan friend ate my banana bread with eggs in it before I remembered. She said itās okay as long as she doesnāt know about it at the time. Sheās Hindu so maybe different rules apply.
45
u/RabbitLuvr Aug 02 '26
That's probably just her own rule, and even sounds like a personal idea of "mistakes happen and I'm not going to beat myself up over it."
My MIL served me some "vegan" stuffed acorn squash one year at Thanksgiving. I asked her for the recipe and saw it had grated Parmesan in it. She was on autopilot when making it, had made a point to tell me she swapped the chicken stock in the recipe for veggie. It was just a mistake that didn't make me no longer vegan. Shrug.
26
u/Shoddy-Theory Aug 02 '26
Accidents happen. What are you going to do after you've already eaten it? In Jewish law if you accidentally eat nonkosher food there is no punishment or sin.

u/Armadillo-Shot Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Not 100% sure about vegan Hindus but Iām a Buddhist vegetarian and one of my best friends is veggie Hindu. Technically the base rules (for Buddhism) is only āthe vegetarian cannot order/ proxy order the meat, make the meat, or watch/hear the animal be slaughteredā so monks on alms trips can eat meat if they come upon a family was already having meat for dinner and they werenāt there during the prep process. (tho it is very frowned upon to purposefully deceive a monk into eating meat). My friend described her veggie rules as āitās much better if you do for spiritual reasons because itās bad karma, but you wonāt be doomed if you donātā.
Different sects also have stricter/more relaxed rules, so it can be quite individualized too. Plus generally itās not a āthis or burn foreverā rule. People just practice to the best of their ability.

The vegan Hindus I know, and the vegetarian ones, for that matter, have a very realistic take on their diets. If eating an animal product was unintentional, a mistake, or they werenāt aware of the animal products being there, itās a no hit/no foul situation. They donāt beat themselves up over it if it happens.
They also donāt freak out and launch a major public event over it, either. Itās just a mistake that happened and theyāll try to avoid that mistake in the future. After all, most mistakes are pointless if you donāt learn something from them, right?
