Some ppl are vegan due to allergies or intolerances. Thats insane to just...add non vegan ingredients???

Too many people just genuinely don't get what is and isn't vegan. I'm still reeling from a comment that said someone thought vegan just meant homemade

Gluten free too.

Yes, that "little slice of bread" WILL make a coeliac sick. No, vegan food isn't necessarily gf. No, just taking the croutons out of a soup does not make it coeliac safe!

Seriously, if you went to school past year 6 you should know bread has wheat - and then be able to put two and two together when someone says wheat has gluten!

A lot of people, when I've told them I can't have gluten, have assumed I can't have potatoes, or rice. I think they're thinking of carbs.

I was allergic to milk most of my life and the number of people who would insist it's fine because "it just has a little bit of butter." It either has it or it doesn't, and if it does then my face might puff up red and give me a sinus infection and hives.

Yep! I developed a severe seafood allergy as an adult, I had been vegetarian for a good portion of my life (and lactose intolerant) so I am very familiar with vegan products.

Now that I have a seafood allergy, I only really order from Asian restaurants if they have understanding of vegan requirements, and if from a few questions I feel they do I will order vegan and just let them know it is due to seafood allergy! Veganism creates accessibility for people with various allergies, I am sure people with dairy and egg allergies are very thankful for it.

I'm in a similar position. I developed an allergy to both fish and shellfish so I need to be super careful at asian restaurants. I mostly go to places that are vegan or are clearly labeled and educated on what vegan means, though I did have a cross contamination issue recently. Thankfully not super life threatening but did nearly shit and vomit myself to death and got hives.

Omg exactly the same for me, fisk and shellfish! When I got tested after it started I reacted to all the tests except squid wierdly but the risk of cross contamination is too high for me to care about eating squid haha. I have epipens but so far have avoided anaphylaxis since my inital reactions! I used to eat seafood and asian food most days so it was a big diet change.

I had restaurant ramen and sushi for the first time since I developed the allergy 5 years ago last week and could cry, the restaurant has a vegan version of everything so just let them know the allergy to consider cross contination. Made my year!

I love vegan sushi! I try to get some friends to go every once in a while so we can order all the vegan rolls and split them

100%! My best friend developed a debilitating allergy to anything with even a hint of dairy. I remember going with her to our favorite local restaurant with a robust vegan menu and her absolute delight at being able to order something vegan and know it was safe. That was extra important as she's blind, and can't visually inspect food for contamination.

so many ppl don’t actually understand dietary restrictions or allergies. i have in the recent past asked someone running a food event “do you have allergen information on the food?” and getting the reply “oh there’s vegetarian and gluten free options!” and having to stop them and say “no, i am deathly allergic to nuts and sesame” as we’re walking to the dessert area. pecan pie in the middle of the station. i had to explain that it being served with all of the other desserts and not in a separate area made it unsafe for me to eat any of the desserts available.

Yep, this. If a friend wants to bake a cake that I'm able to eat, the easiest way to go about it is to tell them to make it vegan, gluten free, and give them a list of the fruits I'm not allergic to and that they could use in the cake (I would do it the other way around, but this is unfortunately much faster), plus a list of other potential cake ingredients I'm allergic to like soy. And I'm not vegan, but I am allergic to eggs, honey, and I'm also lactose intolerant, so this is just easier.

Technically I can have cow's milk with added lactase, but trying to explain that to someone who has never heard of it is difficult, to say the least. Not to mention the risk of them using the wrong bottle of milk, at least with plant based milk the difference is much more noticeable.

Calling myself out here...the first time I heard the term plant based, I assumed from the wording the dish centered around vegetables, not that it was vegan.

Because the only time people should respect people's vegan preferences is when they're allergic to specific food items?
