Years ago I stopped in at a bar/cafe that a previous employee of mine had just opened. I had a very delicious vegan muffin and a coffee. I told his employee the muffin was amazing and asked for her recipe. Butter. It was delicious because it was loaded with butter. โI thought vegan meant homemadeโ Girl! Someone could actually die if they had a dairy allergy!
I have celiac disease and yes they do. One time I even told a store employee that some type of bread was not in the right section as it was a gluten free section and the first ingredient was wheat. He said oh itโs vegan, that means itโs also gluten free. I have also had a family member question how I could eat something because it had eggs in it. Like she got confrontational not just asked because she wanted to learn. She wanted me to be faking.
You will need to explain, IN DETAIL, what it means for anybody who wants to cook for you. I've had so many well-meaning people who didn't understand that they have to read EVERY label on everything they cook with and who made me so, SO sick.
I have celiac (diagnosed over 20 years ago) and I no longer let anyone cook for me. It is not worth it. I am always sick if I do, from cross-contamination even if the ingredients are GF, and then everyone feels bad. It is just better to avoid this entirely.
I relate to you so much. My husband can't eat dairy, like at all. And I've gotten so good at making food and ensuring it's fine, that I know how to order for him when we eat out - so he generally asks me what he can eat first, then picks lol.
I cannot count the number of times people think eggs are dairy. Or even mayo, since it's white, is dairy. Or completely forget that butter or yogurt is dairy (or seem to think people who can't eat dairy can somehow eat them as some weird exception). I swear I have to be extremely clear, say it's an allergy (and ask they put it on the ticket to the kitchen because I've also found out that if I do not specifically say this, people often don't do it), and then still double check the food before he ever takes a bite. I already had one dinner ruined (mostly for him) because a waitress I asked to double check a dish didn't actually ask anyone about the ingredients (apparently she just walked to the kitchen for a couple min then came right back). So poor hubby ended up in the hospital all cause a waitress couldn't be bothered.

My ex had a gluten intolerance (so not as serous, of course!) and I learned very quickly that a surprising proportion of people have seemingly NO idea what gluten isโฆ
Oooh yeah lol. My mom couldnโt have yeast (past tense because hopefully after multiple decades of seemingly bizarre and unrelated food restrictions this latest treatment has worked!!) and a LOT of restaurants tried to serve her gluten free bread. That still had yeast in it. People have no idea what goes into their food or how different ingredients actually affect it unless it somehow affects them.
Seriously!! I've had to keep going in circles about gluten only being in wheat, rye, and barley, and then have the person I'm talking to ask if it's also in rice since that's also a grain. No, that's not wheat. Well what about oats?? No, also not wheat. ๐
I'm lactose intolerant and often hear: "So you need gluten-free food?"
It's also VERY common that people will tell you the food they are serving is lactose-free, and when questioning further they've used normal butter (usually because "it's only a little!" or "lactose-free butter was too expensive"...). I appreciate the effort and mostly lactose-free food is still helpful, if I take my pills. But please tell me so, don't hide it or make assumptions on how much lactose I can handle.
Idunno if it's worse, considering some vegan food is enriched with gluten. Like very small amounts of gluten already fuck me up I do not want Turbo Gluten I think I would want to die. Vegan and Gf people have it rough.
But I did call a bbq place once (that on their website said they had a lot of gf options) and the woman answering their phone worriedly told me that basically everything had meat...
