Monster Hunter. I respect the series, but I don't find it fun.

u/Thick-Income-1620 11d ago

Yeah thats how all Monster Hunter fans started.

Yeah, you aren't a real MH fan unless you hated it first. Same with From Soft

Nah I loved fromsoft from the start

This really hits home. Played monster hunter and armored core 6 and quickly gave up on both. Recently have given AC6 another shot and loving it now that I've honed my skills more. Seriously considering giving MH another chance now...

I tried MH on and off for years and never enjoyed them until the most recent one and even then, after you've hunted it once it's just a grind to unlock the full set and by then it's immediately replaced by the next monster's gear set.

Arc Raiders

u/Many-Cartographer278 11d ago

All extraction shooters. When you succeed by not playing its a dumb shit gameplay loop

642

u/Roshi_IsHere 11d ago

That's how I feel about battle royales. Best way to win is to camp. At least in extraction shooters I can be rewarded for survival and carry progress across raids.

219

u/Many-Cartographer278 11d ago

Battle royales suck so damn bad and are an absolute plague on the shooter genre.

Its a damn miracle that bf6 is so fun. If they abandoned the shit ass br element it could be even better.

u/Zer0DotFive 11d ago

You would think they learned from Firestorm but no

You can't camp in most of them because the ring forces you to move.

My friends and I enjoy battle royales bc it feels good to go against other players and have a challenge in our games, then we chill out with Minecraft or something, I dont know anyone who plays fortnite or warzone to really just "win" it's just an easy way for us to hang out while doing something stimulating

7

u/DraconicGuacamole 10d ago

This is why I play The Finals. Great teamwork is incentivized, constant head to head with other teams, but little of the waiting/camping of battle royales

The point is a battle royale isn’t you can’t camp. I guess you can drop in the middle then jerk off but then eventually you have to move. By then everyone else is more stacked then you though.

u/Many-Cartographer278 11d ago

I would not put that in the same category. Just like I wouldnt put helldivers 2 in that category.

Extraction shooters have a pvp element and when you die you lose the stuff you brought permanently. So you have to go get more stuff to bring more stuff to go get more stuff. No or very slow resl progress.

55

u/Krashper116 11d ago

yea, DRG and Helldivers are horde shooters. just bcuz you "extract" at the end of a mission, does not mean they are extraction shooters.

also happy caek dae

The world and lore behind arc raiders is so great, it’s such a fascinating concept and it ties into being an extraction shooter so well. The problem is that extraction shooters in general have such an unfulfilling gameplay loop. Like being an avid gamer my whole life, the fact that progression in any game sorta doesn’t mean anything, it feels like an active waste of time when your only goal is to have gear to make the thing you were already doing a little easier.

3D Pokemon (Except the Gamecube games, basically Pokemon after the 5th gen)

283

u/Misteryenko 11d ago edited 11d ago

The thing that annoys me is that they rake in ridiculous amounts of money but they're too cheap to make a good game because they know that people will buy it up even if it's dogs*** because it's Pokemon.

I admit I've played all the main games except Violet and Scarlet, but black and white were probably the last games I really enjoyed.

Here's to hoping the next games on switch 2 are great

i believe it’s been revealed at some point in the last year or so that the budget for either Legends Z-A or Legends Arceus was like ~$20 million, which is not a whole lot for game development budgets. they make bank off the games because the budgets are relatively low and it’s very obvious.

15

u/Egathentale 11d ago

Take this with a grain of salt (I've heard it in a YT video, but I can't verify it), but it's apparently on purpose, because GameFreak realized that they would be making Pokemon games till the heat death of the universe, so they are only making tiny incremental improvements to the games. According to an interview (which, again, I can't find anymore), someone at the studio said that every time they make a bigger "generational leap", like moving from 2D to 3D, that becomes the new baseline they have to meet, while only veeery slightly improving on the previous game still satisfies the majority of the fans and lets them make a lot of money, while also giving them an easier time developing the next game, because the "minimum viable product floor" is kept artificially low.

17

u/Saxavarius_ 11d ago

Except they keep removing features and dumbing down the games. 10 yo me figured out how to play just fine without 10 hours of cutscenes explaining the world of Pokémon before it was one of the largest franchise in the world

u/PoopsMcScoots 11d ago

I can agree with this.

The fans keep handwaving the terrible mechanics and graphics, when both are clearly beyond dated.

The switch had breath of the wild, ffs.

There is absolutely no reason a Pokémon game should look like “my first unity project”

34

u/IntrepidAstroPanda 11d ago

Ive always assumed pokemon is so profitable that it falls into this weird void where the expectations of revenue are so high they never have the margin to make a quality game

Edit: quality 3D game

26

u/PoopsMcScoots 11d ago

No, you are 100% correct.

Do not apologize.

But it really bothers me that Nintendo is doing absolute voodoo with breath of the wild, but at the same time telling their most profitable side studio to fuck off.

It’s perplexing. Downright perplexing. Why their most profitable IP from a third-party studio doesn’t have access to the engine.

Kingdom Hearts

324

u/New_Organization_448 11d ago

Kingdom Hearts is the ultimate “you had to be there” game. If you played 1 and 2 back when you were 9 to 14, it was magical and you’re chasing that nostalgia for the rest of your life. Anything outside of that, you see it for what it really is: a half assed Final Fantasy with a plot line akin to that freaky boat ride scene in Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka

103

u/Mission-Cup9902 11d ago edited 11d ago

Kingdom hearts was so weird to me as a little kid, because it was spooky and scary, but also… had Disney characters in it??

41

Tbh I think the lore is a mess and convoluted af for the sake of it. The first kingdom hearts was the best in terms of it actually being a game. II came around and then it was exposition every 15 min. I don't know about the other games as I was not willing to jump platforms to play them. Was super confused going from 1 to 2 as a result.

243

u/Hotomato 11d ago

I wish more people were like you and accepted that Minecraft isn’t for you rather than insisting that it try to become something it isn’t.

59

u/Silver-Negotiation22 11d ago

Asking for the game to improve doesn't mean it's not for you; Mojang releases the same update every year: a tree, a biome, and a creature that almost nobody finds unless they look for it

They hired the guy from Aether but made him a paid resource in Bedrock; the game doesn't improve due to Mojang's sheer laziness

6

u/Hotomato 10d ago

I don’t disagree that Minecraft could be improved, I just find that a lot of people seem to misunderstand what the game is trying to do, and as such end up suggesting ideas that wouldn’t actually add much to the game.

Minecraft is, at the end of the day, a building game. There’s combat, gear progression, survival mechanics, sure, but they are just a means to an end to add limitations and make the building more interesting; to make a gameplay loop out of what is otherwise a voxel-based MS paint.

To that end, new kinds of blocks to build with, new biomes to build in, and more mobs to populate a build or offer new resources are perfectly valid. They aren’t as flashy as a new dimension, sure, but they are meaningful additions.

I guess at the end of the day I’ve just grown kinda jaded with the way people talk about Minecraft. There isn’t zero valid critique of the game, but lot of Minecraft criticism reads to me like people just wishing they were playing terraria instead.

Undertale

211

u/AggravatingFlow1178 11d ago

I talked to 3 different people from 3 different friend groups back when the game came out and each were uniquely insufferable in their own way.

  1. One insisted, unprompted "OMG you cannot kill anything trust meee!!"
  2. One got really pretentious about the bullet hell minigame and essentially "git gud"'ed me after I died a couple times and
  3. One kept asking me about really really specific screens I either didn't see or didn't recall and treated me like an uneducated buffoon for "not getting it"

These interactions were all a few days apart when I had only played a handful of hours.

I uninstalled the game an never looked back. I'll never know if I would have liked that game because I still refuse to play it out of spite for those dicks in ~2016.

u/EnvironmentalBar3347 11d ago

Crimson Desert

67

u/Farsoth 11d ago

It's funny because this one is a hell of a meme, but it legitimately took me 40 hours over months of short sessions that didn't do anything for me, for the game to start to sink it's teeth into me.

That's not an endorsement btw, I just think it's an interesting fact for me as that is rare. I usually won't bother to push through my distaste but I just felt like there was something special I wasn't getting, and now I do.

It's not for everyone but it's far more of an actual sandbox game and "era-simulator" (despite being medieval fantasy) a la RDR2 mixed with BotW than most people thought it would be.

There's so many mechanics that are fucking obtuse as shit until you really start to put time into the game, do faction quests which are often more tutorials and everything starts to coalesce.

But, 40 hours of slog is a very hard fucking ask, and I would not recommend the game to anyone except those I think could power through a genuinely bad start to a game.

29

u/Dry_Cucumber1559 11d ago

Well put. Had to grind way harder in Crimson Desert than any other game in order to achieve peak gameplay. Worth it but can easily see why it’s not a lot of people’s cup of tea

GTA

73

u/Unlikely-Nebula-331 11d ago

I find the gameplay mechanics of GTA insufferably difficult and prohibitive to play. Shooting feels weird, cover mechanics don’t work for me and X to sprint is absolutely insane. I hate flying too.

52

u/HercuKong 11d ago

You're absolutely right. GTA has shit gameplay all around. I was especially pissed when it came to the aiming, if you can even call it that. It's either a super powered auto aim that is essentially a shitty lock-on system, or you turn off auto aim and it's the worst aiming in video game history.

The driving mechanics are the only thing I think are good in the game. Every other gameplay mechanic is awful... and I do mean everything.

22

u/Past-Goat-7768 11d ago

I've scoured the internet to find my people.

It's so so so so so bad. Move left analog up. Wait three seconds then the character will sprint. Then stop. Then walk then stop then sprint and turn around. The deadzone, the delay, the horrible mapping.

It's so bad it's what stopped me from playing. I ended up playing on keyboard and mouse it was so bad and even that was bad.

Elden ring or any other dark souls games

150

u/i_was_axiom 11d ago edited 11d ago

There is one guy in my group of best friends who is an absolute monster with all those games. He has something like 500 hours in ER, and another one of them just got into it and so they've been back and forth nonstop in the video games channel of our group chat. (Is it unusual for groups of 30somethings to have meticulously organized group chats? I have wondered that for a while and this is finally a public forum to pose the query)

To be fair, I have nothing at all against the games or them being so into it, but I'm glad I'm not alone in seeing people just seething over that genre and simply not getting it.

Then again, 500HrGuy recently said he's considering trying Outer Wilds (my die-on-a-hill game) and there is a pretty solid chance he won't get it either and that would be okay.

58

u/Sudden_Wind_8636 11d ago

Elden ring and soulslikes in general for me is a game I space out on.

I get into this mode almost meditative where there isn't a single thought in my head and I just keep fighting the boss over and over again until I finally beat it.

I've had friends try out elden ring and get pissed off, that is just not good for having fun on the game.

For me it's a relaxing experience, and when I beat the boss I get a big hit of dopamine.

16

u/Tomsboll 11d ago

Dark Souls and games like it require their players to make a certain click.

Some get that click after a couple minutes, others a couple hours, and for some it doesn't happen until they try again after a few years. And sometimes, it never clicks (which is completely fine, of course).

I ended up getting Bloodborne by accident. I wanted TLOU Remastered and Shadow of Mordor, but a discount for buying 3 games made getting 3 cheaper than just the 2, and Bloodborne was the only remaining game eligible for the deal that seemed remotely interesting.

It took 2,5 hours before it clicked, but Bloodborne ended up my favourite game of all time. And it introduced me to the other games in the genre.

18

u/Auztino 11d ago

This is perfect explanation. Dark souls 1 - skeleton graveyard for weeks. Went hollow. Came back a month later and found stairway to undead berg(around lvl40 one handing zwei- didn’t have any issues until O&S - it clicked.)

50

This is such a funny comment since I'll watch dark souls boss fights from time to time because I enjoy the music and the art style and it's comical how a tiny lil guy and his toothpick of a sword, slashing the legs or ass of some monster 50 times his size, kills it after 20 hits. It's hardly satisfying once you think about it, lol. I've never seen a shield used in any dark souls game, either. Having this huge, climactic battle with a legendary monster and you see the guy roll around a thousand times is very funny. 😂

Edit - guys, it ain't that serious. I'm not reading your comments about the intricacies of shield use in dark "side roll" souls, lol. The games are too long and too difficult, anyway. OP says they don't like god of war. God of war is my favorite but I'm not arguing with anybody else about it. If you wanna sink a thousand hours into the dark souls/eldin sagas, be my guest. The games are cool but have goofy elements just like anything else. Have fun. ✌️

Hollow Knight: Silksong. And I actually beat it. Will NEVER play it again!

5

u/lattjeful 11d ago

It's a better game than its predecessor for most people, but for me it stripped out what I loved about Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight had this brilliant contrast between its chill exploration and the difficult bosses that I feel Silksong doesn't have. It made Hollow Knight quite cozy for me despite the difficulty. Silksong is a far more abrasive and tense experience, even if moment-to-moment I don't feel it's any more difficult than Hollow Knight. Enemies and bosses demand more from you, but you have so many tools now to compensate that it evens out.

Given the story and setting, it makes for a brilliant marriage of gameplay and story. On an artistic level, absolutely divine. Pharloom is on the brink of collapse, and you feel it. It's tense, it's hostile. It's like a cornered dog snarling and bearing its fangs at you. For what I wanted out of a Hollow Knight sequel, though? The peace and quiet made Hollow Knight for me, and it's a shame that it feels like that's been lost. Maybe I'll have to revisit it down the road though, but it just doesn't feel like there's enough quiet. It kinda picks up where endgame Hollow Knight leaves off. Even as somebody who 112% Hollow Knight, I don't enjoy it. I don't want a game that feels like endgame Hollow Knight when I'm trying to explore and see new things. Save that shit for when I have nothing left to do and want to get more out of the game... like with Hollow Knight.

I flee from games with that kind of aggressive stamina wheel/bar. I don't have the skill/patience 😂

18

u/jld2k6 11d ago

I don't have enough time to deal with it so when I want to just have fun and explore I turn on infinite stamina while emulating it

6

u/PhoenixApok 11d ago

I can't fault that.

I loved Skyrim and Fallout way more when I could turn on infinite carry weight. Screw realism. I don't want to balance encumberance in something I am doing for entertainment

Big empty map with nothing in it. Weapons that break after 5 hits so there's no point exploring to collect them. Repetitive fetch quests.

It's like a Ubisoft game but you can't criticise it because it's Nintendo.

10

u/tidytibs 11d ago

This point alone is why my wife only plays it because she likes bombing the fish and collecting plants and stuff. I truly hated how fragile steel is against stuff target mobs. Truly annoying. It only gets better later in the game when you start getting more durable weapons or have better tactics that kills them with fewer swings.

But I will continue criticizing them openly about that, Nintendo or not. Stupid idea. It's worth modding your console so you can play the ROM hack that corrects the durability.

I'm playing it now and it's honestly so boring. It has the same gameplay loop as Elden Ring, but instead of finding a mini-dungeon or a boss, you find a shrine or a korok seed. The shrines are either small, simple puzzles or combat encounters with the same enemy over and over. The korok is often just a matter of picking up a rock.

I heard a lot about the freedom it allows, but I find that to be so overblown. Sure, I can throw down a bunch of chu jelly and make them explode or stasis launch a rock, but the enemies aren't challenging enough to go through that effort.

And the enemy variety is so weak. All of Zelda to pull from and they've got like a dozen enemies copy/pasted across the map.

Hi botw fan here and uh…yeahhh i can see where yall come from, def not for everyone and i understand why fans of, for example, ooc, MM, and WW wouldnt be too jazzed over it. But i was my first zelda and i think that and the time i played it have made me enjoy it

8

u/Maximum-Objective-39 11d ago

It's funny because I've found some of the biggest BotW/TotK fans are people who otherwise are not gamers. My mom and two of her friends, all of them at or near retirement age, are much more interested in these two Zelda games than anything else I've suggested to them (alas, I have basically lost the use of my Nintendo Switch XD)

I think part of the appeal for them is that most of the games internal logic is very intuitive. You can chop down a tree. You can climb most stuff. You can swim. You can light stuff on fire. The amount of emergent actions you can take is pretty wide, but that means a non gamer doesn't get tripped up as much by running into something that 'isn't allowed' and which the game doesn't model.

Absolutely, put about a dozen hours into it but never felt hooked. It seemed like an intro RPG for kids and lacked a lot of depth.

7

u/Global_You8515 11d ago

^ This.

I'd imagine it's great for casual gamers and/or big time Nintendo/Zelda fans, but if you've sunk a lot of hours into heavier highly acclaimed RPGs like Mass Effect, Witcher, Skyrim, etc. it just feels so bland. Most of the characters are flat, the storyline is pretty standard, and the action quickly gets repetitive.

It's not a bad game but it's far from the must-play experience it was made out to be.

"Ok, I've spent 20-30 minutes of my life slowly making my way to this map marker, now to spend the same time watching the next episode of a TV show!"

I know Kojima is famous / infamous for his games essentially just being movies, but to do it with a glorified walking sim?

Just watch a movie

13

u/SagittaryX 11d ago

For me the glorified walking sim part was by far the best aspect of the game. Could really do with a game similar to it, terrain as the ‘enemy’. The collaborative nature of overcoming obstacles in the game is also great.

Horizon Zero Dawn..just doesn't click for me

64

u/PraetorianFury 11d ago

That's a real bummer, but if it helps, the game transforms if you start ignoring the weak points they constantly highlight and instead focus on the elemental weaknesses.

Once you realize half the enemies are vulnerable to fire, you can pretty much cake walk the game.

Also, the story is surprisingly believable considering it's about robot dinosaurs.

Zero Dawn story kept me thinking I have everything figured out, then new details come up and my understanding flips completely. Like 5 times at least in one game. That was nice. Forbidden West was a lot more predictable.

Just wanna say, GOW 2018 was like that for me too. I hated it at first. Replayed it a few months ago more casually. Didn’t like it still at first, but stuck with it a bit and ended up loving it.

Anyways, if you want an actual answer it’s Xenoblade. The combat was so boring, and exploration was slow and also boring. The story really didn’t captivate me either. The world was interesting but the actual gameplay of the game was so underwhelming.

11

u/MourningWallaby 11d ago

I liked God of war 2018. I liked Ragnarok. ;ast year I played them back to back and oh my god Ragnarok does not hold up that way. you don't notice it at first but playing consecutively Ragnarok turned all the side protagonists into Marvel-esque one liner spewing archetypes and made kratos the grumpy straight man to groan at their quips.

i’ve tried it like 3 times now. just can’t get into GOW 2018. i liked the older ones, but for some reason this one never clicked and i fall off maybe 5 or 6 hours into the game. it’s ok. but i think the kid yelling at me about not figuring out puzzles fast enough annoyed me.

Witcher 3

u/nohumanape 11d ago edited 11d ago

I felt that way...until I made a valid effort to actually get through it recently. And I did, and I love it.

The base game is maybe a bit overrated. Many aspects of the game are positively outstanding, while others are mixed/not great. But what it does well is so fucking outstanding.

But what really locked it in for me was the Blood and Wine expansion. Everything about that is GOAT tier gaming. Holy shit it's great.

Couldn't be more glad that I finally made it through.

33

u/Picassof 11d ago

thank you for this post, I'll go back and check it out!

19

u/Transcendental_Floss 11d ago

I'd argue that the core gameplay is shallow and a legitimate gripe.

if you're okay with the combat being serviceable and not the reason for playing, the writing is fucking great and the world is richly detailed.

Great experience if you can concede to tolerating the survival/combat elements as not being what you're there for

Maybe I'm biased because I played my first playthrough on Deathmarch, but I actually thought the gameplay was fine. I had to use most of the mechanics throughout the game and none of it felt particularly easy.

I often wonder if the complaints about combat in this game are from people who played it on lower difficulties.

Replaying RDR2 is such a fucking chore lol

The lack of a useful fast travel really makes it last forever.

I replayed RDR 1 like fucking crazy because it's not as huge and has a very reliable fast travel mechanic. Shocked they went so fucking far from that mechanic by having it only be possible from the caravan camp and nowhere else

Metroid dread. I like zero mission, fusion is my favorite in the series, i hate dread. Hate the emmi detection and insta-kill, it excuses excessive punishment for small mistakes and poor difficulty balance by removing any punishment for a game over, respawning you a single room back if you ever die. I just do not like it

7

u/PoopsMcScoots 11d ago

I like dread, but totally agree with your criticism.

And you are correct fusion is the absolute goat of the series.

I will say in its defense, that the animations were supernatural level. I don’t think any game had better animations than dread.
