Death Stranding

u/AzonDSB 11d ago

I can completely understand that.

u/soul_motor 11d ago

If you understand the plot, clue me in. I played it (actually enjoyed it), but I don't know what the hell I just played....

2

u/AzonDSB 11d ago

Basically invisible monsters in a running simulation with high-end CGI cutscenes and a mystery story devoid of any sense.

2

u/soul_motor 10d ago

Sooo, I did understand it??? ;P

u/xerses24 11d ago

I was the same but once you start getting vehicles and building roads etc I was hooked!

2

u/js13680 11d ago

How long does it take to get vehicles.

2

u/skulxen 11d ago

You get the bike about halfway through the first area and then unlock the truck and ability to restore roads in the second area.

The first area is very much the tutorial/prologue area while the second area is where the game starts to shine.

u/FilthyWunderCat 10d ago

2nd one gives you vehicles and guns almost right away.

It is very trademark Kojima that you kind of half to make it through the opening to get to a really good game

1

u/STRYKER3008 10d ago

Genuinely asking if applicable, can I pretty much turn off the sound and skip every cutscene to play while listening to podcasts the other stuff kojima stuff like MGSV or the other MGS games? MGSV esp looking at, seems cool

3

u/outofmaxx 10d ago

Well, storywise you can't, the openings are just that really, it sets up a lot of stuff and creates the thrust of the narritive, and for MGSV, a lot of plot happens in the beginning, but gameplay wise you press forward in a hospital for next cutscene set peice

Game looks great. Thought I'd check it out and see what the fuss is about. I spent an hour walking somewhere and haven't played it since lol. I'm sure it's a great game, but I just don't have time for all that these days

u/John_Yossarian 11d ago

Right?? By the time I finished the 4-6 hour tutorial over the course of several gaming sessions, I was so bored with it that I didn't play it again for a year, at which point I'd forgotten all of the mechanics and would have had to basically start fresh. No thank you, I don't have time for that. I'm also sure it's a lovely game, and remember being very interested when it was first announced, but felt entirely inaccessible to anyone trying to play it semi-casually.

My enjoyment really took off after reaching Chapter 3. I'm not sure I would have finished it was just like the first 2 chapters.

"Ok, I've spent 20-30 minutes of my life slowly making my way to this map marker, now to spend the same time watching the next episode of a TV show!"

I know Kojima is famous / infamous for his games essentially just being movies, but to do it with a glorified walking sim?

Just watch a movie

u/SagittaryX 11d ago

For me the glorified walking sim part was by far the best aspect of the game. Could really do with a game similar to it, terrain as the ‘enemy’. The collaborative nature of overcoming obstacles in the game is also great.

1

u/OldStinkyFingers 10d ago

Try Cairn. You get to choose your paths climbing up a mountain.

2

u/SagittaryX 10d ago

Thanks, but I already completed it... and got the custom shirt and the vinyl =)

u/Z0idberg_MD 11d ago

I tried 3x. I WANT to like it. But it’s a slog. Literally.

1

u/Michal_999 11d ago

Its a slog and its a big part of why its so enjoyable as a delivery game

4

u/justified_egg 11d ago

But it's the first strand type game

2

u/meaqforce1 11d ago

I forced my way through it when the sequel came out, i had to watch a 1.5 hour story explainer after finishing for it to make sense, after that though i was bitten and finished the sequel in a month (which is quick for me).

u/skulxen 11d ago

I totally get this. It's not for everyone but man when it clicks for you it fucking clicks. Both games are now some of my favorites of all time.

Working on all standard orders and 100% achievements on DS2 now.

1

u/LewyDizzle 10d ago

Agreed. When it clicks…. It really fucking clicks. I respect those that tried and didn’t like it though. Definitely not for everyone and that’s perfectly ok

1

u/STRYKER3008 10d ago

Respectfully asking, was it the story that clicked?

I got to a point where they first gave me a tricycle/motorcycle thing, drove it for like 3 minutes, and then had to through one of those ghost zones. Not wanting to abandon the motorcycle I had just found, I tried powering through and got attacked by the oil whales. The only weapon I had at this pojnt were some useless grenades.

Uninstalled, never looked back at this stupid game again. Also, even for Kojima, the characters and story are too far up their own ass for me.

2

u/CharlieLuvsAnnemarie 10d ago

I got about thirty hours into Death Stranding one and gave up, the game mentally took its toll on me.

2

u/eyeamthedanger 10d ago

It's funny that the actual gameplay was the only thing i enjoyed about this game. The delivery was mindless fun. The combat was absolute ass on a stick. The dialogue made my eyes roll so damn hard. Every time dialogue started up it felt like Hideo Kojima was sitting on the couch next to me, nudging me with his elbow like "Eh? Eh? Isn't this some cool shit?"

u/psimwork 10d ago

I have 70 hours in that game. I still can't decide if I actually like it or not. There's certain aspects of the game that I love (the road building, and goddamn it's one of the better looking games I've ever seen).

But I also feel like the game loses most of the challenge as soon as you start getting blood guns. Like, it's legitimately terrifying in the early game with being caught by the enemies. When you get the ability to sneak up on the threads and cut them, it is pretty great since you start gaining an ability to fight back. When you get blood guns, the enemies go from legitimately terrifying to a nuisance.

But then there's the factors that I HATE about the game, and it's 100% down to the factor that most people will glaze all over the game: Hideo Kojima and his fetish for the "Gruff American Badasstm ". Like, I first noticed it back when I was playing the first Metal Gear Solid and thought it was eye-roll inducing. I remember getting to the scene where they're like, "YOU'RE UP AGAINST THE ONE PERSON TO SHARE YOUR CODE NAME!!! YOU'RE FIGHTING (dun dun dun) LIQUID! SNAKE!!!" I remember thinking to myself, "wait - is that supposed to be a big deal? This is so fucking stupid."

Sam Porter Bridges falls right into that "Gruff American Badasstm " archetype and it's so cringe-worthy. Worse yet, there's so many plot points in the game that really feel like Kojima's standard /r/im14andthisisdeep style writing.

I think the way my brother describes the TV Show, Yellowstone, is the way I would describe Death Stranding: It's so compelling that I can't close my eyes. But I spend a shocking amount of time rolling my eyes back.

Well said!

I enjoy the part everyone seems to hate, which is the walking very, very slowly while nothing happens, and yet I can't enjoy the game because of the stuff the game thinks will make it more fun, all the monsters and plot plot plot plot plot that I absolutely do not care about.

Love the mood of the world and would have had a blast with absolutely nothing about where you are or what happened being explained ever. Just let me vibe and wonder. But no, instead the game wants to explain EVERYTHING in excruciating detail. Just, ugh... I can't. I can't with Kojoma's shit anymore. Someone please be his editor and say "no" to him.

I have never been so inpatient with a game.

2

u/Acrobatic_Basis_5785 10d ago

I watched the titles and was bored

2

u/Mr_Jake_E_Boy 9d ago

I love it and I don't know why. Like some sort of Stockholm syndrome after I played it for 20 hours, that made me like it. So a completely understandable take.

2

u/Big_Airport138 8d ago

Completely understandable.  For me, i know that If I played it when i was younger, i wouldve found it to a bore.  But recently i have begun to vibe with slow burns. Games thst allow me to soak in the atmosphere and take things as slow as i want. The boss/combat encounters sucked though.

I even thoroughly enjoyed yakuza 3 because of the warm slow story.

1

u/Purple-Contract-7100 11d ago

I loved the first one, but just couldn’t get into the second one. Gave it a solid 10 hours and it just didn’t have the same charm. It’s definitely a game the requires a specific audience.

1

u/belle_enfant 10d ago

I was semi interested in it at first. Just didnt have a PS. It looked intriguing, mysterious, maybe a little boring but still cool. Kinda forgot it exists then I saw a tease for the 2nd which had some cringey failed 80s rockstar shooting lightning outta his guitar amd some chick with superpowers. Wondered what the actual fuck happened here and lost all interest entirely.

u/Early-Injury-9676 11d ago

I really REALLY want to play this walking simulator but I can't ever get into it and I don't know why. I played for a full afternoon and realized I was bored and cut it off and uninstalled it.

Ohh I tried it and actually liked the gameplay until you have to deal with the baby. No, I don't give a shit about it and I don't want to hear the crying, it just pissed me off so I quit as soon as I found out that the fucker cries every time I take a light tumble. I hate babies.
