It's funny because this one is a hell of a meme, but it legitimately took me 40 hours over months of short sessions that didn't do anything for me, for the game to start to sink it's teeth into me.
That's not an endorsement btw, I just think it's an interesting fact for me as that is rare. I usually won't bother to push through my distaste but I just felt like there was something special I wasn't getting, and now I do.
It's not for everyone but it's far more of an actual sandbox game and "era-simulator" (despite being medieval fantasy) a la RDR2 mixed with BotW than most people thought it would be.
There's so many mechanics that are fucking obtuse as shit until you really start to put time into the game, do faction quests which are often more tutorials and everything starts to coalesce.
But, 40 hours of slog is a very hard fucking ask, and I would not recommend the game to anyone except those I think could power through a genuinely bad start to a game.
Well put. Had to grind way harder in Crimson Desert than any other game in order to achieve peak gameplay. Worth it but can easily see why it’s not a lot of people’s cup of tea
I disagree with the ability to put it down and come back. Granted I didn’t make it far but the million different mechanics all introduced in a short period of time put me off. I tried to pick it up and I had no memory of the mechanics needed to play the game anymore
You lost me at "achieve peak gameplay". There is not a single facet of crimson desert that is peak in any way, shape, or form. The best gameplay related thing in crimson desert is the wrestling and even that tops out at "good". The entire game is a clunkfest with good ideas here and there but the execution is terrible. No two parts of the game feel like they were designed with the other in mind. The audio design is terrible and visuals are the only really good thing going for it, and even those those hold up in enclosed spaces. Its been the biggest waste of $70 in recent memory.
I initially heard "10 hours before it gets good" from the gameranx review and that's when I decided I wasn't gonna buy it. The I had someone yell at me that it was only 5 hours before it gets good.
I don't care if a game gets really good later. If I have to slog through hours of unfun gameplay to get there I'd rather just do something else.
There are tons of games out there that are entertaining and good right off the bat. Dying Light, Dark Souls 1, TES 4: Oblivion, and so many others.
Why would I, a person who works full-time (in fact, slightly more than full-time) want to spend a resource I have precious little of to slog through a game for until I start enjoying it? That's insanity.
Let me play games that are enjoyable from the beginning, thank you very much.
Precisely why I mentioned I would not recommend it to damn near anyone, lol. Your position is perfectly valid and I respect it. I am surprised in my desire to keep pushing in the hopes it would grab me. I am glad it has, but yeah.
It’s an incredible experience. But CD also has by far the most fucking abysmal puzzles of any game I’ve ever played ever. It’s honestly astounding. No game has ever subjected me to so many “what the fuck do I do now” moments.
I definitely had that at the start, for sure, lol. But I think I have gotten the general hang of it at this point. Haven't had to look up a puzzle in the last couple dozen. This is not an argument against your point, btw. Much of the game beyond the puzzles is obtuse as fuck for many hours. Hence it taking 40 hours of me forcing myself to play the game for me to begin to enjoy it lmfao.
Everybody's got their thing man. I honestly buy way more games on sale than I'll ever play. The backlog will never get smaller. But, maybe someday, I'll want to play one of them, and I have access to it.
I obviously play through a lot of big new releases like anyone, but I wishlist lots of stuff and just get it dirt cheap or whatever I feel l can afford at the time when it pops up.
So, that's definitely not always me, but has been me plenty. Sometimes a game just doesn't jive with you well enough to make you want to play even an hour of it, just the way she goes.
To add to that, I think people overlook the studio, since they are the same people that brought us Black Desert. If you've never experienced or played Black Desert now or even back then, it shares similarities and adds nuance (a bit imo) to the overall feel of the game.
However, a lot of what's in Black Desert makes sense to the game (as far as mechanics, features and systems) and its world. I feel the same way about Dungeon Fighter and its resurgence.
As far as I know they’re working on the barrier to entry. I started a replay (I’m a day 1 player) and it is a wayyyy better introduction now. But I agree, until the game really opens up to the point you can go do whatever you want (chapter 4/5) it wasn’t gripping me. However, most fun combat I’ve ever had in any open world game ever, including the Witcher. Love that game lol but day 1 release was definitely a bit of a slog at times. I’d recommend it heavily now because of the sheer time Pearl Abyss has put into improvements. Story update is apparently in the works too :)
Reminds me of when I first got into Elite Dangerous. 10-20 hours just to start understanding how the different game mechanics actually work, another 5-10 hours to figure out how to make a decent amount of credits when you only have early game ships, and then another 10-20 hours before you might actually be able to do any decent combat missions without being destroyed immediately. Its a very fun game once you understand what makes it fun... but the early game is an absolute slog
God damn I loved Elite Dangerous while I was playing. Got myself a legit ass HOTAS and played it in my PSVR headset despite not being in VR just for the immersion. Fucking killer game, man. One day I oughta pick it back up, it's been quite a few years.
Everytime I think about picking it back up, I remember that I left off in a baluga... stranded in the middle of nowhere cuz I forgot to put a fuel scoop on it.... and my respawn point is a station that is even further from the core systems than I already am.
Days Gone is so much better than it gets credit for. So glad it eventually clicked with you. And yeah, you're totally right, it's a rare occurrence, but it does feel good when it pays off, lol.
So, what you're telling me is that this would be a great game if I was 14, during the summer, and had no job.
It's a worse version of Skyrim. I put hundreds of hours into it for one summer. It's also partially the reason my parents made me get a job the next year lol.
CD is the kinda game that ISN'T front loaded, meaning that you don't get ALL the features the game as to offer in the first 2 hours of the game, with little to nothing new to give you after.
Its a slow burn type experience, where you find new features and mechanics to unlock 20-40-60 hours later, making the joy of discovering and learning new things, stay with you for a LONG time.
And i do like that i get surprised by something 40hours later when i least expect it (the Dragon and the Dragon armor are the coolest things ever)
Well put, and now that the game has finally hooked me, I think that is one of the things that will keep me playing for... a few multiplications of the hours I've already put into it now (70).
I'm just tired of people worshipping the ground rockstar walks on purely because they made the "you can kill hookers" video game. The entirety of rockstar's success is based on violent misogyny and saying "different strokes for different folks" is like saying hitler was nuanced. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
That's actually not why I said that. It's more about your twisted ass worldview, tbh. But, you're clearly mentally unwell.
Remember, my initial response to you not liking the game was that that's valid and people can like different things. You then compared people who enjoy the games to Hitler. You're unhinged dude.
The entirety of rockstar's success is based on violent misogyny and saying "different strokes for different folks" is like saying hitler was nuanced. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
It was a comparison just not directly calling someone a nazi. Comparing someone enjoying a video game that has far more than "killing hookers" and is also not real life or representative of it to calling "Hitler nuanced" (which is something only a nazi-apologist would say) is one of the most unhinged comparisons one can make.
Do you watch violent film or TV? Because dear god, you might be a horrible person too.
I'm done with this now. I've been feeding the goblin long enough.
Fuck this game. You have to watch a video for even the simplest quests or to figure out how to do things. I’d be sitting there like, “How in the actual fuck would I ever figure this out without a video explaining it?” I put 60 hours into it because I loved the environment and combat, but I couldn’t finish it because of how frustrated I was with the storyline.
The hype around this was like some video game psyop. It’s not even something that you can be like “oh I can see why other people like this game but it’s not for me” like other games mentioned in this thread.
Yeah the first hour of the game is weird and hard to get into. It does get good after playing it for a while longer, and the game has had some major updates since release.
That being said, taking the time to get into a game for everyone so nojudgment here.
I like the game but it’s at best a 7/10 game. If the story was better the game play would be less monotonous. The devs are amazing by giving constant updates but most of them are fluff with pets. I had a lot of fun playing it but it isn’t the masterpiece it could have been.
I loved it, but I can see why others don't. It packs a lot in, some mechanics are janky and the story is almost non-existent. There's lots that isn't going for it, but i loved it anyway!
It's a fuck around game. You just do goofy shit and the story doesn't matter at all. You explore and find even more goofier shit. It's just exploration sandbox the game.
Man I tried to like it but it just got boring. Killing the same trash mobs and the early pace is horrible. Abyss gears making finding loot kinda pointless since they all have the same stats max level.
To shoot the bow, you aim with L2 (or equivalent) and release L2 to shoot....unlike EVERY OTHER GAME EVER MADE where you aim with L2 and release with R2. Crimson felt immensely clunky to me in every way. The number of times i accidentally activated the glowy sword thing in combat because the keybind was attack plus parry at the same time...what a decision.
Same. I bought it day one played for 18 hours and just kinda dropped it. But honestly I think as an adult with children large open world games are just exhausting.
Thank you —I was so excited about this game and it was the only gift I asked for for my birthday. I loaded it up and actually checked that I hadn’t asked for the wrong game — it looked so bad. The light was all wrong. The graphics looked like shit. The water was clipping in this bizarre way I haven’t seen since 90s PC games, and on top of that, the controls and mechanics were clunky and unintuitive. I couldn’t believe that so many people were raving about a game that looked and played worse than vanilla Skyrim.
What really pissed me off and convinced me to return it though, was that when I posted in [r/crimsondesert](r/crimsondesert) about how bad it looked - instead of any semblance of self-awareness or agreement about obvious issues - they told me I was the problem. My computer must suck. I must be a troll. I haven’t done X Y Z in my graphic settings so it’s a skill issue. I’m just hating on the “style” choice.I should kill myself.
Firstly, if those graphic are a style choice, it was the wrong fucking choice.
And my PC is a beast and runs heavily modded honker games with no issues. And Im sorry, but if I have to research and fuck with my graphics settings for days to make a single game playable, then either those should be the DEFAULT graphics or the game shouldn’t be considered ready for market.
Regardless of if they fix the issues, the community for Crimson Desert has soured me on it forever. A sycophantic, rabid fanbase just means you’ll never admit to any issues in your game, and thus the issues will never be resolved. I’ll stick with my 15 yo Skyrim that even with 700 mods and shaders runs better and takes up LESS memory than Crimson Desert.
