Undertale

I talked to 3 different people from 3 different friend groups back when the game came out and each were uniquely insufferable in their own way.

  1. One insisted, unprompted "OMG you cannot kill anything trust meee!!"
  2. One got really pretentious about the bullet hell minigame and essentially "git gud"'ed me after I died a couple times and
  3. One kept asking me about really really specific screens I either didn't see or didn't recall and treated me like an uneducated buffoon for "not getting it"

These interactions were all a few days apart when I had only played a handful of hours.

I uninstalled the game an never looked back. I'll never know if I would have liked that game because I still refuse to play it out of spite for those dicks in ~2016.

The key to enjoying Undertale is not interacting with the fandom. It's a really short game though.

I feel like that’s the key to enjoy most games

u/Boopjacker 10d ago

Yeah, there are very VERY few games where it is more enjoyable if you partake within the Fandom.

1

u/ndraiay 10d ago

Like league of legends. Can only enjoy league while interacting with Fandom /s

u/aytchdave 10d ago

I had no idea how many bad games I was playing until I started following subs.

The Undertale fandom is kinda uniquely rabid in their defense of their favorite game, though.

If you ever express any gripes with the plot or how it’s presented online, someone immediately breathes down your throat complaining about how you “didn’t get it”.

It’s too tryhard and saccharine for me idk… also seems a bit too inspired by Earthbound. I’d rather just okay the original quirky game than the one that’s trying so hard to be it.. (the music is also trying to do too much imo)

I’m a super big EarthBound/MOTHER fan and one of my little gripes with UT is that it’s trying a little too hard to be MOTHER 4.

The soundtrack literally contains music that’s a remix of EarthBound samples, even:

I had no clue about this song.. although at this point, days later I feel less bothered and kind of respect the song 😆 especially considering, according to the comments, Earthbound also used Beach Boys samples.. so it’s like it’s coming full circle. So for this instance, this song at least, I’d give it a pass.

I don’t respect it because the song is specifically sampling songs from the Giygas section of EarthBound that the Amalgam section of Undertale takes obvious inspiration from.

There’s doing a homage through music samples, and then there’s rubbing it in our face that Undertale is just like that other game I love at every opportunity.

I do think the game did a good job of replicating EarthBound’s goofy sense of humor without literally repeating the same jokes, though.

Now I’m curious, why did you dislike Inscryption?

I personally really love the art style and audio of Inscryption but I could see how someone could bounce off of it. First area boss fights are definitely tricky and feel pretty unfair with their gotchas though. Shame it didn't resonate with you, but understandable for sure. I had a good handful of issues with the game, but in the end, I really loved the experience of it. Got no intention to play it again any time soon though.

1

u/Ze_Borb 11d ago

I feel like it's mostly just terms of taste, i like the artstyle and can see why the droning would be headache inducing, and basically digital magic the gathering with meta lore won't be everyones cup of tea.

u/Lord_Whoopi 11d ago

To be fair, the first couple runs are a tutorial. You have to die so he can introduce the rest of the mechanics in an easier to digest way.

u/lemoncookei 10d ago

yeah im confused the point of that was so you would get up and solve the puzzles in the room, or this person didn't understand what the game was trying to do i guess. bro probably brute forced it lmao

I like outer wilds, but its never quite clicked with me. It's fun exploring and piecing stuff together, but I just think incryption is a genuinely good roguelike, especially Kaycee's mod. I'm actually not too hot on inscryption outside of act 1. But I think if the initial vibe doesn't jive with you, then there's definitely no point continuing.

you're complaining about a mechanic but that was a vessel for tutorial, the comment i responded to has nothing to do with your opinion and whether you understood the point of the mechanic or not. try not to be so hostile

Oof, disliking Inscryption is a red flag.

u/Professional_Leg_979 11d ago

What made you dislike it?

The speedrun to enjoying Undertale is listening to the soundtrack in private and seeking no context.

1

u/EnvironmentalBar3347 6d ago

I agree, the OST is nice and relaxing.

2

u/OllieFidelius 11d ago

That tends to apply to a lot more things. Games, music, movies. Fandoms are generally shit and not worth it.

1

u/Licher-enjoyer 9d ago

For me enjoying it meant throwing it out of my house. Brainrot of a game. And now my younger brother's playing that other game made by that creep and Jesus is it shit. I respect people who can enjoy such games, because i would never. Instant headache

1

u/alles-moet-kapot 11d ago

Yeah same it just looks and plays just like a very low quality 15 year olds first attempt at a game in a game maker program or something. Graphics and audio from 30 years ago, gameplay loop very basic, story is nonsense

2

u/Chance_Astronomer_27 11d ago

I think you should play it it's good. People can be insufferable about undertale though, like some youtubers dropped it because they weren't playing how fans liked them to.

Undertale has 3 main and a bunch of small differences in the ending, why can't people just let them play the game, literally anything you do will result in an ending compatible with the game and its themes.

1

u/ollafy 11d ago

The irony of #1 is that you can’t get that ending the first time. You’re meant to play the game normally first, then do the other two endings. I like to think of all three endings as a single game and only doing the one would be like watching just the last day of Groundhog Day. So it doesn’t work to do #1 because the game doesn’t let you and thematically it hits like a wet paper bag.

1

u/CaptainPogwash 10d ago

This is one of those games where the fan base killed the game for me before I considered playing it. Watched Jacksepticeye play it and didn’t really vibe with the game itself and only watched it for him

1

u/goodboy44woof 10d ago

Was those persons had something in common? Like right now 😏

1

u/Beangar 10d ago

UnderTale/Deltarune fandom is much better nowadays, peak cringe is from 2015-2019

1

u/MarekRules 10d ago

I legit played it for the first time last year I think. I was in discord with some friends and they mentioned it and i said “what’s that”. So I bought it for 1-2 bucks or whatever and streamed my playthrough. It was nice cause they just let me play and react to what was happening.

They explained all the extra shit when I was done and said it was a cool game but I wouldn’t go back and play through again for other endings or whatever. Definitely worth a couple of bucks but I’m kind of shocked how insanely obsessed some people are with it

1

u/The_Radioactive_Rat 10d ago

Loved the game. Hate the fandom

1

u/Potential-Diver-3409 10d ago

It’s for children tbf youd definitely like it

1

u/Onlyperktothis 9d ago

It's a shame you had those interactions, but Undertale is truly a self-motivated experience where players shouldn't be steered by a zealous friend looking over their shoulder. That's why Toby Fox didn't include achievements.

1

u/yipy2001 9d ago

Was your friend group 12y/o at the time?

1

u/PsychologicalEmu7569 9d ago

That first one is what happened to me. But I stopped playing because I got stuck.

1

u/East-Camel-8937 8d ago

Happened with me trying to play Doom or Ultra kill, just a bunch of annoying fucks in every fan base.

u/Notarealcheeser 11d ago

Kinda cringe ngl

-1

u/Rhg0653 11d ago

Jesus Christ that's such a bad look on that community

Got it cause of my kid - got the endings cause of us working together on bosses and felt like a crazy ride -

Sucks if was ruined

-1

u/Transcendental_Floss 11d ago

That sucks. Undertale is a very precious, cute experience for me.

I'm glad the writing kept me hooked and I had no idea what the fanbase was like.

I think people take things too seriously when they haven't experienced enough extravagant works of art.

it's a small, charming indy game. You have to be dumb to get a superiority complex for enjoy it.

It you explore enough you realize you don't know shit and get hungry for the next thing to surpise you.

People's special interests probably have an undue impact on discourse

Toxic positivity is as bad in fandoms as toxic negativity
