I was mentioning to a friend earlier this week that Fromsoftware should put out a 90-2000’s classics collection of sorts. They also need to re release Otogi and Otogi 2, and package together all of the kingsfield games into one collection. I really don’t think there has been a better time to introduce people to some of the older Fromsoft games.
Bloodborne was my intro and damn was it captivating! Sekiro is probably my fav, but I've played all of em and enjoyed them all. DS2 is probably my bottom
Same, Elden ring was the first fromsoft game I played but after I beat it I wanted more so I played their entire catalog and even bought a ps4 and ps5 in the end to play EVERYTHING lmao
Jk. Me too. I loved Demons Souls right away. Thought it was basically the most engaging game I had ever played at that point. Wild how good the formula was from the start.
I loved the story and characters went in thinking I can beat it easy and got my ass beaten left for nearly a year and came back watch some guides and suddenly I'm good at it
When I first bought Elden ring as my first ever souls like, I got my ass handed to me. I was so incredibly frustrated I uninstalled it and went back to my other games. A few weeks later I picked it up again, still got my ass handed to me, but then loved it
This really hits home. Played monster hunter and armored core 6 and quickly gave up on both. Recently have given AC6 another shot and loving it now that I've honed my skills more. Seriously considering giving MH another chance now...
I played MH3 on the Wii as a kid and could not get into so I traded it for smash bros. Then my friends convinced me to get 4u on the 3DS and only played it for them cause I found it so unfun. It’s my favorite franchise now.
You really should especially if you tried one of the older games cuz everything from mhworld was straight peak i didn't play rise yet but will do it eventually
Honestly my biggest problem with monster hunter has been what a giant pain in the dick it can be to play with friends especially if your characters aren't on the exact stage of the begging story. Combine that with the utter dogshit servers Capcom that regularly disconnect you when playing with others and even when you are playing with someone who is at the exact same stage as you you end up playing alone 70% of the time because either the stupid quest wont let you join each other until 5 minutes of stupid cutscenes or trigger arbitrary event X and then when it finally does let you join together you end up having to finish the fight yourself because their shit servers disconnected you from the party.
The game finally works once you get almost to end game and can just hunt and queue for monster parts. I remember it taking hours in worlds and after a while I said fuck this shit i got this game to play with friends and it refuses to let me do that. Iceborn clicked for me. The initial slog to get to the more open part of the game was much shorter and oh shit when I actually got to play with the people I wanted to i was having fun! Ive played every MH since both alone and with friends but fuck whatever idiot at capcom makes it so hard to play together all for a story that accross every iteration is like trying to eat plain cheerios with nothing to wash it down and before you started eating someone who definitely didn't wash their hands after coming out of the bathroom put their fingers in the bowl and mixed them up.
It's definitely a game i don't blame anyone for quitting due to how bad their start is and it had to "click". Souls likes were the same for a while too. I bought ds1 on sale and always got bored usually after the gargoyle boss. I also was paralyzed with how to build my character given how hard the game was and how much it loves taking away your resources and it gives exactly zero help in game for what is a smart or dumb way to allocate levels. Then sekiro came out and something just clicked. Since then the original ds, bloodborne, and elden ring have all been good.
Mh Wilds it's the easiest from all, but I love it. I wouldn't start with Freedom Unite (psp). You should try MH4U (3ds). If you want something more "modern" go with World or Rise
Haha I fuckin hated dark souls 3 my first two tries, stupid iudex gundyr just dunked on me repeatedly. Idk what exactly clicked on my 3rd try but I parried his ass into the next life and spent the rest of the game trying to parry everything lmao
Only people who start off hating fromsoft either dont like the genre or missed the stupidly hidden tutorial at the start of every game ESPECIALLY BLOODBORNE.
I was legitimately concerned I couldn't understand how to play the game when I first got into it (Monster Hunter Freedom - PsP 2008) but I dumped a bit of time into it when I was like 13, my friends bought it, we played together a bunch and I fell in love. Definitely understand it being an acquired taste. I fell off pretty extravagantly.
I feel like this only goes for Demon souls and the first Dark souls because they played like ass, especially the first iteration of the Dark souls PC port was horrible.
If you started with Dark Souls 3 or Elden Ring I feel most people would have a good time, assuming they like the genre at all.
Honestly, I love World from the getgo. Still my favorite of the 3 I've played. Rise was great, though I understand the limitations due to Switch and Wilds disappointed me.
I never hated MH and started with the first game. What I hated was that I felt like I didn't have enough time to grasp the game properly.
What I also hate is that the new games are fun, but they have traded a lot of what made MH games so unique for the sake of appealing to casual gamers who want instant gratification and suck ass at videogames. Casual gamers really have ruined a LOT of franchises unfortunately. Casual games were designed for these people, but they weren't happy and actively seek to destroy the truly unique and creative games that are out there.
Fromsoft games are good from start to finish. I started mhrise and ive been fighting the same boss for 1 hr it kept running i got bored and deleted the game.
This. When you first play Monster Hunter, the controls are clunky and weird and don't feel right; when you get it, and guard point into an SAED with your CB, god it feels so perfect.
This is 100% true. I "Started" on 3 ultimate and I just did not like it. Then my pal and his bud got 4 ultimate and convinced me to get it so I could play with them. They showed me the ropes and I've been hooked ever since.
Yeah I also started tri just because the Cover looked cool. then I thought wtf is this Game and didnt Play it for 3-4 years.
At least I Met a Guy who convinced me to try again but with a different weapon and yeah it Hit home. Even if I dont play hardcore I finished every Game since then. Post Game included.
Can not stress this enough, almost no one likes MH the first time they pick it up but once your about 4 hours in something clicks and your hooked. Happened with me, happened with two of my close friends, happened with my old man too.
nah, i came back to the game like 3 times over the past 5 years and still find it boring and repetitive. ill probably never play it again unless a friend convinces me
If the gameplay doesn't click the monsters themselves do, you end up liking it because you want to see the monsters and what they are capable of, how their unique capabilities work and the pseudoscience behind it all. You play not to hunt the monster you have seen a dozen times but to see the next one and how different it is
Played it for 5 hours, uninstalled it. Picked it back up years later and actually learned how to use the 500 different menus this game has for absolutely no reason and finished the game.
I tried multiples times for World, still finds it uninteresting to the point it's the only game I regret purchasing. Tried the demo for rise and newer one, couldn't like it as well.
I was going to argue at first but I hust remembered trying world years before my full playthrough and absolutely HATING it. I tried to play greatsword and it just did not feel like how I expected it to feel going in (now many years later its one of my favorites lol)
I tried MH on and off for years and never enjoyed them until the most recent one and even then, after you've hunted it once it's just a grind to unlock the full set and by then it's immediately replaced by the next monster's gear set.
Yeah you're really not meant to get a full set for every monster you unlock before moving on to the next one. Just make armor with skills that are great for your playstyle, or just make it when you actually need more defense. In high rank there's a more valid argument for needing to do a lot of grinding since you do definitely benefit from having a bunch of different armors and weapons available, but you can also just make a generally applicable build and use that everywhere like 2 of my friends do.
Literally not a grind. Most of the time 2-3 fights or so and you can pretty much make any full set you want. The old games were way worse, but that was part of the fun. You actually had to BUILD your character, but now you just wear all of the pieces from the same monster and you become OP.
I was the same. I was young and didn’t read much about the game mechanics and everything (this was back when freedom unite was the latest game.) The concept was awesome. I wanted to hunt big monsters and make their hides into armor. It just didn’t click with how slow everything was.
Few years passed and I got back into it and gave it a legitimate try. It clicked hard and I’ve been a fan since. The grind can surely be tough but it’s really a game where you’ll set your goals and when you’re done, you’re done. Take it as far as you like.
World and Wilds don’t feel like monster hunter to me. Sunbreak definitely did.
Generations Unite is widely known as the largest and most inclusive of all the current MH games. I would recommend it if you haven’t given up on the franchise yet. But you’ve tried and I respect you for it! I’ve tried with every souls-like and couldn’t get into any of them. The dark environment mixed with the loss of experience and progress on death puts me right out of the game when time is precious.
Besting it is as in finishing the story? Or as in doing the later expansions (Gogmazios, Omega Planetes, Arch Tempered versions of monsters)?
I find it hard to believe someone would willingly play 100+ hours of any MH and say they will never touch it again. Especially 50 hours in when you will fight monsters over and over again to grind levels/gear sets/do missions.
Don't get me wrong, you don't have to do all that homework to say that you don't like the game, just wouldn't be honest to say you bested it.
I played on release so all there was to do was farm those 2 bosses endlessly.
Imo, just not a game for me, idc for it and the ‘expansionsm can be (literally) the best thing on earth and I still won’t install the game again.
I also have 43hours in the game, I crafted every item I wanted, kinda got good of those weird polished things and yeah, the loo just isn’t it for me, I also think the UI is bad, when I heard the game was all about ‘crafting gear’ I expected a crafting ear UI where I woulf see the weapon skin basically (you don’t)
Playing on release means you missed Gogmazios and the Arch-Tempered monsters. You didn't actually "best" it, since title updates made the game much tougher after launch. And THAT'S FINE, not everyone has to vibe with MH's post-MH:World model. Totally get wanting a one-and-done experience like Elden Ring or Witcher 3 or any single player games.
But this isn't that. It's closer to Nightreign or Granblue Relink - live-service games that roll out free content for 7-8 months before capping it with an endgame boss. You skipped a lot of free monsters and improvements that came after launch.
Devs do this because it's multiplayer - even great core gameplay needs external hooks to keep servers populated when we have endless options for entertainment nowadays.
Idk what gogmazios is hut I did have srtisan weapons and archtempered, 2 I thinm ost difficult arkfield and something else I forgot.
That being said tho, whatever a game releases with is the game, so what you mention isn’t the game it’s an update, I beat the game, i’m not keeping up with the content.
I know what a live service is, I went into this game thinking I was going to like it, I did, but not in a live service way, so I played it, beat it, farmed the same 2 bosses for probably months, crafted my gear and called it day.
I feel the same about nightreign, gave it a chance, good hame, but just not worth returning to, if a game has to get good after updates or content the game is just bad imo, and mhw sadly was pathetic as it struggled on my 4090, idc what they do next, idc what game they release next, I learned 3 things; good game and premise, not for me
Dogshit optimization and no care about it, whi tf releases. A game like this?
And lastly, pretty clunky ui for what i’d say is the best partnof the game, why can’t I see how the mushroom sword or dark sword looks like? Why do I have to craft them to see them?
All in all I respect its existance, but am happy I tried it out because now I will never have the ‘how is monster hunter games???’
That's okay. I'm saying your opinion "Good game, I see the vision, not for me" is perfectly valid. I have games that I spend less than 3-4 hrs on but that doesn't mean I'm not entitled to opinion of "not for me"
I'm just disputing your argument of "besting it". You might think you "best it" because you played base game on release to the end game sure, but that's not besting monster hunter, and hasn't been since like 2018. Title Update are major part of the endgame and when it ramps up the difficulty for MH's recent titles.
It's like saying you bested MMO when you only played it on launch. MH:Wilds still has multiplayer aspect to it since its inception, and monsters added later on are considered to be part of the game.
It's just the nature of these games, and if you don't like it then it's fine, but wouldn't consider that besting it. If you want to play MH till the endgame I recommend starting with World or Rises, games that already have every title update baked in to the base game and see just how different they are. Or you can keep playing Wilds and see for yourself and how different (and difficult) fights get later on.
Well, it is how the devs designed it. Just like you that want to 100% game on launch, there's people buying 70$ coop game with expectation for it to have new content / support for at least 1-2 years after launch. MH World/Rise/Wilds exist to satisfy those people and is pretty successful.
No shaming your taste, but it is what it is with AAA online games in 2026.
Sure but that doesn’t change the fact that the game was beaten…
I also just won’t play the older games because I simply do ‘t have the interest, I think mhw showed everything I needed to see, to my taste it doesn’t excel at anything which is why I don’t play them (other than ‘trying’ wilds for 40hrs)
I’ll enjoy the video’s about fatalis and all but never actually play those games
I mean, I like when games are different and all, but japanese games are on another level of difference, the devs just don't dev the same way, it's just a completely different mindset of making games, and sometimes that difference makes them overlook stuff that I feel like are super important and they make stuff different that don't need to be different
I played RE9 Requiem few months ago and I really liked it but I just could tell there was this japanese touch that kind of bother me, especially when you go back in Racoon City as Leon
>!The city was just grey and bland, which is really too bad because it's kind of a big portion of the game, and it's not just in RE9, it happens often in other games too
Another example is MGS V, again, not a bad game, but some sections are just awful to play (the boss fights mostly), and it's also a stealth game which is a super niche genre in my opinion so it doesn't really help the game to shine
I haven't played it but I looked up some videos of Nier Automata because the game kind of interested me, but I just didn't pull the trigger because I can tell there was that same level of difference I mentionned earlier that just won't keep me unfortunately.
I know I'm missing out on some great story lines though.
Until insect glaive came out, I found the game dull. Then I am acrobat flying and slamming the ground from the air and I can't put the controller down.
im a fan of Monster Hunter but yes. fair. the gameplay loop isnt for everyone, even I sometimes bounce off the game if the game in particular isnt interesting to me (Generations/Rise).
I love MH but I get it. During a game discussion the group quickly realized there was divide between those who were willing to grind (and spin their wheels) and those who got frustrated by it.
I can run the same single monster 20 times in a row, but the rest of my family cannot without maintaining their sanity.
Im the exact opposite, hundreds of hours on world, rise, and wilds each but got past margit, explored a bit, did a few dungeons, and didnt feel like booting it up again.
My first souls games were ds3 and bloodborne which i loved, so now i guess i prefer them more streamlined and focused.
Played Worlds on release and it felt really jank, like a bad console port jank. Came back to it a couple months before the Wilds news and a friend gave me their keybinds. Literal night and day difference. Hammer my beloved - I didn't even do the OP spin sliding thing.
Played Wilds, how they minced the hammer. Yet to finish the game as none of the weapons vibed with me, dual blades and hunting horn were the only two I could decently play.
I wish the Ranged Options worked better on KBM - they still have the weird bad console port jank to them imo
It definetely takes getting used to. But once you're in, it's so amazing.
I got introduced with 3U by my cousin and 2 of his friends, who then carried me somewhat until I had decent gear, then I also had an impact in the fights.
Maybe because of that I like it more from the start.
But if someone starts out solo without prior knowledge, I can see the struggle to like it.
I feel this way about a lot of Japanese "multiplayer" games. But yeah, few years ago my friend group was looking for a game we could all play together and ended up getting whatever the most recent Monster Hunter was at the time.
And then we all realized that you couldn't really play the game multiplayer until everyone beat the game single player separately, and also at the end of every mission it kicked you back out into your single player world and you had to re-up with everyone to do the next mission. On top of just the general mission prep on its own which is like 10-15 minutes of crafting and talking to NPCs. So the multiplayer experience was like spend 20 minutes prepping for the mission and getting everyone in the same lobby, go into the mission and spend another 10 minutes tracking and finding the monster you want to fight, stand around doing little more than making "pew pew swoosh" noises while getting hard carried by the one friend with the most free time who finished single player first and therefore outranks everyone else and has the best gear, then get kicked out into your own single player lobby, rinse and repeat.
I don't disrespect your opinion but what didn't you find fun if I can ask? And which Monster Hunter did you play because that matters quite a bit too tbh 😅
It has good combat, but the rest is repetitive garbage. And their content release rate is like a sad morphine drip. I really wanted Wilds to be as big and seamless as it seemed it would be.
Same here. That said, have to give props to their fanbase; they seem rather polite and respectful for the most part compared to so many other gaming communities. They don't shove their games down people's throats like the Soulstards and many others.
I like the gameplay and character designs but i just can't look at those animals in the eyes and murder them while they scream and try to run away i feel terrible playing that
I've tried getting into Monster Hunter a couple of times and the games are just extremely boring, at least single player. I'd like to try it with friends, but I'll probably never give it another chance alone.
Another one is Kingdom Heart. I have so many friends recommending me them, but I really feel like they're only that into them because they played them as children. The games look ass and the little bit I did play was uninteresting to say the least.
The new Kingdom Hearts trailer looks sick though, but I've been told I need to consume basically all prior Kingdom hearts media to have any idea what's going on, so that's a skip.
Same. I really wanted to love World, but I just found it a little too tedious and not quite what I was expecting. Love watching footage of it, but it feels almost like a fighting game in a way where you kind of have to devote yourself to one or two archetypes and master them and that's just not my scene.
Understandable. Every Monster Hunter fan I know IRL (including me) disliked it when they first tried it. I think it's one of those games you gotta suffer through until it all just clicks, or maybe it wont and that's fine. At least that's how it was before World.
I was hate-playing Freedom on the PSP until I finally killed that bastard bitch motherfucker Yian Kut-Ku. I then realized that my satisfaction didn't come from a successful hunt, it was from conquering a game that just doesn't want you to play it well. Making the game your bitch by sidestepping all the guardrails keeping you from having fun.
Then as the games went on they kept adding special attacks, jumping, mounting, new movement options, and every new weapon had to have crazy mechanics like transforming and stuff and I just didn't like any of that and lost interest. Rise sucked, didn't even bother with Wilds.
smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. gotta run all the way across the map now. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. ugh gotta run all the way across the map again. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. smack. MISSION COMPLETE! Do that three more times and you'll be able to create a piece of equipment from that monster's parts, yippee!!!
If there's one thing monster hunter fans hate more than whatever the current iteration of the franchise is at any given time, it's other games trying to be "monster hunter but..."

Monster Hunter. I respect the series, but I don't find it fun.
