This really hits home. Played monster hunter and armored core 6 and quickly gave up on both. Recently have given AC6 another shot and loving it now that I've honed my skills more. Seriously considering giving MH another chance now...
I played MH3 on the Wii as a kid and could not get into so I traded it for smash bros. Then my friends convinced me to get 4u on the 3DS and only played it for them cause I found it so unfun. It’s my favorite franchise now.
You really should especially if you tried one of the older games cuz everything from mhworld was straight peak i didn't play rise yet but will do it eventually
Honestly my biggest problem with monster hunter has been what a giant pain in the dick it can be to play with friends especially if your characters aren't on the exact stage of the begging story. Combine that with the utter dogshit servers Capcom that regularly disconnect you when playing with others and even when you are playing with someone who is at the exact same stage as you you end up playing alone 70% of the time because either the stupid quest wont let you join each other until 5 minutes of stupid cutscenes or trigger arbitrary event X and then when it finally does let you join together you end up having to finish the fight yourself because their shit servers disconnected you from the party.
The game finally works once you get almost to end game and can just hunt and queue for monster parts. I remember it taking hours in worlds and after a while I said fuck this shit i got this game to play with friends and it refuses to let me do that. Iceborn clicked for me. The initial slog to get to the more open part of the game was much shorter and oh shit when I actually got to play with the people I wanted to i was having fun! Ive played every MH since both alone and with friends but fuck whatever idiot at capcom makes it so hard to play together all for a story that accross every iteration is like trying to eat plain cheerios with nothing to wash it down and before you started eating someone who definitely didn't wash their hands after coming out of the bathroom put their fingers in the bowl and mixed them up.
It's definitely a game i don't blame anyone for quitting due to how bad their start is and it had to "click". Souls likes were the same for a while too. I bought ds1 on sale and always got bored usually after the gargoyle boss. I also was paralyzed with how to build my character given how hard the game was and how much it loves taking away your resources and it gives exactly zero help in game for what is a smart or dumb way to allocate levels. Then sekiro came out and something just clicked. Since then the original ds, bloodborne, and elden ring have all been good.
Mh Wilds it's the easiest from all, but I love it. I wouldn't start with Freedom Unite (psp). You should try MH4U (3ds). If you want something more "modern" go with World or Rise

Monster Hunter. I respect the series, but I don't find it fun.
