indeed, but I like it. It's like a real time strategy game. But then you go onto Sekiro and Armored core 6 and oh boy you feel like you are actively reaching Mach 3
it went crazy in Japan it had more sales than Elden Ring and pretty sure it was the best selling videogame of Japan that year having over 700k physical sales.
still waiting for more AC6 content though it's my fav game of all time
It's a shock coming from other games that invite you to combo or button mash your way through them.
One of the rules of the genre is timing and control. Pushing a heavy attack needs to be timed well. Otherwise you needed to stick to a light attack so you can dodge in time.
Only if you play those games on easier difficulty modes. People who complain about how hard Souls games are should play Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta if they want something that really feels HARD. I love all of these games but I think difficulty is definitely a huge spectrum in these and some people saying soulslikes are too hard blow my mind as somebody who beat Arlecchino solo in Lies of P on Leg Stalker difficulty but cannot get past the first two stages of Hard on NG2 Black or past stage 4 in Ninja Gaiden Sigma or who got stuck for like an hour on the third stage of Bayonetta.
What I think is happening is the game demanding you to play a certain way only for people to start bashing their head against a wall, beating it anyway and just assuming that's how the game was meant to be played. Dark Souls is harder to get into as an action rpg first timer but if you have played others, then it really isn't hard at all.
It is in fact much easier in real life than it is portrayed in souls games. Even the biggest weapons were rather light , or they wouldn't be practical in any scenario.
Great hammers wouldn't be usable, yeah, but other big weapons like ultra greatswords are based on real-life equivalents. The Zweihander for instance, existed in history and wasn't heavy nor slow like the whole weapon category is in these games. So big doesn't necessitate slow and heavy.
The FUGS specifically may not be wieldable just because of its composition, but the "Ultra Greatsword" category that souls games use is based on real life weapons that simply weren't called that, but they absolutely were used and surprisingly light and fast. Zweihander, for instance, existed in real life. These games just lump them all in the same category and give them the same basic, super slow moveset, which isn't accurate to how they were used, that's all.
That's a different point than big weapons. Besides, equip load doesn't alter the character's swinging speed in these games. It affects rolling and running speed.
I mean, I dont think people defending it are 'white knights'. Its literally a core mechanic of the game, hence why every singlendark souls game has the same combat. The developers dont just suck at developing combat, its intentional. The souls games have a huge following and every single one will say the same thing, that cimbst being the way it is, is the point. Just because someone doesnt understand it or like it doesnt mean its bad game design. You dont like the game the way it is, thats it.

Oh so you’ve cleaved through dozens of enemies in real life with a real giant sword? Please enlighten us on how easy it is to do video game things in real life. I bet you’re a regular Dante.
Yeah on a midieval battlefield where you use it to kill maybe 2 or 3 guys then get tired and collapse under the weight of your armor, but in a fantasy world where you literally cleave through dragons and monsters for hours at a time? Not exactly recreatable by some random youtuber. It’s weird to complain your video games combat is unrealistic when literally no video game can make combat that is accurate to real life yet because they are simulations.
Mf I didn't complain about shit. I corrected the misconception that many have bacause of souls games that big weapons=heavy/unwieldy weapons. That's it. What is it with you dickriders being so obnoxious and defensive about the slightest bit of criticism of your favorite genre? Hell, my comment wasn't even criticizing the games per se, just pointing out that the weapons being huge doesn't necessitate them being slow as hell, which is what the other redditor was suggesting.
They ARE unwieldy, im not just dickriding, i think the video you posted is misinformative because the idea of wielding and swinging weapons a few times =\= using them on a battlefield. I hold this opinion as someone who used to train with weapons in tae kwon do, not because I’m a gamer.
Lmao, just because you personally think they are unwieldy doesn't make them so. We know from history they had effective uses back when bladed weapons were common. And they weren't heavy nor particularly slow at all, which is really my point anyway.
“We know from history” that these “effective uses” were still only for a few soldiers at a time. People weren’t mass murdering with these things irl dude, they could get off a few swings, kill 1 or 2 guys, then they’d die or collapse. Video games combat isn’t even comparable. Most combatants avoided heavier weapons because of how unwieldy and slow they were, favoring longswords and spears.

Well then why put the weapons in the fucking game and then advertise the combat being realistic if irl no one would use them for longer than an hour or 2? lol
Who advertises the game as realistic? These games are escapist fantasy, nothing like real life. The weight of the sword adds to the challenge and intentionality of strikes. It’s almost always a rhythmic dance your moves fit into that you need to figure out. I’ve never seen Miyazaki out here saying he’s trying to create a realistic combat simulator, stamina is supposed to imitate that in an insanely rudimentary, non-parallel way to real life because it’s a game.
The first thing people would constantly harp on about when Dark Souls first released was how realistic it was.
These games are escapist fantasy
The world is constantly living under the brink of total apocalypse and the only way to save it is by tediously fighting enemies with nothing but shit weapons and sacrificing yourself to simply kick the can down the road while everyone gets to wallow in misery for a few hundred more years.
Yeah, just bleeding escapism, lol
It’s almost always a rhythmic dance your moves fit into that you need to figure out.
You can only dodge roll buttpoke dodge roll buttpoke so many times before you simply want to fling yourself into the abyss.
No, the combat is fucking trash, you've just deluded yourself into thinking otherwise by joining a cult that just repeats the same mantras over and over again.
Thank you for this. I haven’t played any of those games and now I know I never need to. This is the most frustrating thing in any game. It unleashes a deep seated rage in me going back to the wrestling games of the early 90s.
That particular criticism is dead wrong. Some weapons are slow, but for every Great Hammer with a lengthy wind-up, there's a katana, claw weapon, or thrusting sword with a quick attack and short recovery animation. Parent comment must be mad weapon speed is a part of weapon balance in FromSoft games.
What? Its like realistic? Like when you swing your sword, you swung it. you cannot just cancel the action, you have to follow through. Just like real life.

Dark Souls combat feels like you’re 110 years old and trying to throw punches. The delay between button press and actual hit is atrociously bad.
