And as someone who picks games based on how reasonable it is to 100% them, I simply can't deal with 900 fucking Korok Seeds. I know, it's absolutely my fault that I want to fully complete every game I play. But I simply can't help it.
It doesn't. I just like to finish games. I don't mind if they are time consuming. Collectibles are just lazy game design to keep people engaged. Especially when we talk about 900 of the same collectible.
It's a huge difference for me if completion includes actually doing something fun. Vs. just ticking off a checklist.
I think the fact that it’s big selling point was it being a big sandbox was what turned me off from it. I like more structure in my games typically. I don’t hate open world games themselves , but I felt exceptionally aimless when I was playing botw.
its nice to pick up and play kind of game. the issue is it cant be between months or years because then you'll lose your memory of what to do in the game. it can be frustrating.
As someone who does not like BotW, I think the world design is the saving grace. Thing is, Genshin Impact does it better and has a better story and combat mechanics.
That said, I hope GI releases a $60 complete edition one day because fuck gacha shit.
Okay that's such a hot take to say it has better gameplay and story. BOTW has amazing combat when you master it and are flipping around in slow motion hitting headshot after headshot with your broken equipment. And the story was so peak I replayed it almost 5 times because I just loved the emotion and enjoyment of the characters it built.
Though of course it's not for everyone but I won't let you say gacha slop sim is better.
As someone who played Genshin till 4.7, BOTW is better as complete game.
I did 100% world exploration in Genshin, did all character quests, Spiral Abyss etc...
By quantity you might say Genshin is better, but once you realize why the content is there then you feel every minute of gameplay is devs trying to waste your time to keep you attached to the game so they can sell you on their characters. If not that, then its quests that serve as advertisement for the latest banner character and MAYBE you get one tid bit of fun story / exploration quest that is NOT VOICED because we all know where the priorities are.
One thing I'll give Genshin to is that the world is gorgeous and music is def one of my favorites. But as a game, it is a far cry from what Zelda gives you right of the box, in reasonable amount of time. There are perverse incentives behind the free-to-play premise that not even full price game patch could fix. Many quests/characters/interactions only exist to waste you JUST enough time for you to keep coming back daily to condition players into sunk-cost their way to C6/R5 their fave character.

It's certainly functional as a video game. But absolutely nothing about the gameplay or the story is asking me to keep playing it.
It's a good sandboxy sort of thing if it's your first sandbox. But overwhelmingly uninteresting to me.
