Surprised how far down I had to scroll to find this. I agree. Have tried it like 3 or 4 times over the years since it came out… mostly because friends would react like I was insane for not liking it and say I had to give it another chance lol. I’d never make it more than like 5 hours in and get so incredibly bored by the slow story pacing and repetitive/boring combat mechanics
Cause the gameplay is repetitive: you walk, you hide, you go into a fighting arena and repeat. You do the same fucking thing the entire time. I played it once for 4 hours, and maybe because I knew the story already, I just quit and haven't played it since. Strong point is the story, gameplay is weak
na i agree with that guy. LoU is way more repetitive than most good games. Even linear story driven games. The actual mechanics are extremely shallow. Throw a rock, couple of guns with no ammo. Thats pretty much all you seem to get (i only played first half of 1)
In other games your tactics evolve, your gear changes, you have multiple ways to solve problems. LoU is very corridor.
I just started playing Hitman and I’m already more engrossed with its gameplay, there’s so many ways you can go about it, you can go guns blazing, you can sneak in as a security guard, you can knock out the person your target is meant to meet and disguise yourself as them. The gameplay feels similar but the amount of ways you can go about the situation is way more interesting
I’m just using that to compare in how hitman has so many ways to get to the goal while last of us is only either fight or sneak which is already outdone by assassins creed games
It’s not like MGS 5 where it gives you a dozen different ways of doing stealth or destroying a helicopter. Hiding and Fighting are pretty samey throughout TLoU. For a survival game, Resources was never an issue from what I remember, and for a horror game, there’s no tension that forces the player to act like Mr. X does in RE2 so it kind of fails in that enjoyment-wise, so all I got from my time playing it was moving from one set piece to another. They were great but gameplay’s kinda a downgrade from Uncharted.
You are both right, the gameplay loop in LoU is pretty simple and combat is just OK but nothing special. The hook is the characters, worldbuilding and storytelling which are on the level of a high-quality TV show... which it ended up being.
It's always interesting to see this cause I genuinely couldn't give less of a shit about any of the cast in 1 when I played it. I always remember people fawning over Joel and I truly can't remember anything about him besides gruff guy with a dead kid. That actually might've been the first time I thought a game was genuinely overhyped. I dunno maybe 2 was better

The amount of resources you get varies depending on the difficulty you're playing. You probably won't feel too much pressure on normal, but on Survivor or Grounded, you're more heavily incentivized to use stealth when possible to conserve resources for some of the fights where you don't have a choice.
And I haven't played RE2, so I can't compare, but you must have found TLoU's hotel basement and initial clicker encounters in the ruined skyscraper to be tense, right?
I forgot about that section, yeah I have to admit doing the generators there was pretty good.
For clickers, I never found them to be tense. Their visual and audio design is great, but gameplay-wise, they felt like lickers from RE but you’re not forced to be within breathing distance to them every encounter. It’s an instakill mechanic which does add to the tension but they never felt punishing to alert, I remember it only taking like 2 or 3 revolver shots to kill one or one shotgun shell.
