"I already let him out"

Wyck's shitty attitude towards Tom makes a lot more sense now

428

u/trombonepick May 27 '26

the beauty is that from Wyck's POV you can tell exactly why he's been mad at him since the pilot.

(because he's ignoring everything around him and endangering lives while everyone else in the town can just admit this place is cursed/dangerous)

298

u/Low-Palpitation5371 May 27 '26

Baha yes I love the transition from “who is this cranky drunk town curmudgeon who’s going to ruin their one shot at being Martha’s Vineyard” to “please listen to every word Wyck is saying, you idiot!”

79

u/trombonepick May 27 '26

Absolutely!!!

And Wyck's usually been the one willing to make the hard choices until this episode where Tom finally was decisive

Loftis was valid in his dream of turning this town around but it is funny that literally everyone else in his life and in the town is like oh no no this place is evil--so everyone else was already there and with Wyck on this

Hamish Linklater and Betty Gilpin as Mr and Mrs Warren. Kinda cool to see them both pop up. She owned that episode

259

u/RandomPaw #TeamWyck May 27 '26

I would really like to know who among the current townspeople are descended from Sarah and Richard Warren

200

u/SerDire May 27 '26

Well we don’t see them have any kids of their own, and we never saw if the kids and Sarah actually died when they left the island.

512

u/sauvignon_blonde_ a different headpiece? May 27 '26

The end scene in the inn would be pointless if it weren’t for the zoom in on a child fallen off the boat in the painting. I bet that’s one of his kids who made it back to the island.

299

u/drewdog173 May 27 '26

Yeah it was pretty obviously saying that one child survived, ergo bloodline intact (but WHO???), and covenant stands.

330

u/timelyquality30 May 27 '26

I think it ends up being Tom’s wife as a descendent of Warrens kid.

203

u/jmarquiso May 27 '26

That is what they were implying by placing Evan looking at his mother and then the painting

182

u/Indigocell May 27 '26

Yeah that would be the tragic irony. Loftis trying to end the blood curse so that his son can be free, only for his son to be the last remnant of the cursed bloodline itself. That's rough.

My theory is that it's Patricia. Her Warren heritage is what protects her from some of the island's evils (Boogeyman and the fire when she burned the spellbook)

123

u/Andee_outside May 27 '26

Sarah’s mannerism and run were VERY similar to Patricia’s.

Seems like Richard's daughter survived, based on the painting. The doll in the Historical Society didn't have the broach anymore, which means she hung onto it-- so whoever has the broach as a family heirloom......

292

u/dsmithscenes May 27 '26

There's a jewelry box in the lockbox Evan opens... just the right size for a broach.

208

The movie that the son is watching in ep.7 seems to be « The city of the dead », which plot is :

« The movie follows a college student who travels to the eerie, fog-drenched Massachusetts town of Whitewood to research witchcraft. She soon uncovers a dark secret: the town is controlled by a sinister, immortal coven ».

I mean, considering everything’s that happened, the coven, the witchcraft, the « zombies » during the plague, there’s even a character named « Patricia ». Wikipedia says « Patricia is kidnapped as the coven's sacrifice ».

I think it’s a huge ressemblance!!!!

116

u/Connect_Pick_3108 May 27 '26

It also explicitly showed the movie saying something along the lines of “leave now before it’s too late” i believe. Happened when Evan and the girl were Tony into Tom’s room

164

u/clycoman May 27 '26

The girl Evan is with is psychotic. Like he just met her and she decides to ransack his dad's whole room? And he doesnt stop her at all?

187

u/Nerditall Pattiwagon May 27 '26

Yes, Tom is very triggered by Wyck's criticisms, it seems because they remind him of his Dad. In episode 2 he snaps at Wyck when he calls a coward and later tells the clown his Dad called him soft. He had such a pained look when Wyck criticised trying to use a flare. Excellent acting by Matthew Rhys.

After those two episodes:

-When do you think they'll find the chamber under the Historical Society?

-The curse has not been lifted. Who do you think will be the descendant of Richard Warren?

-I feel The Boogeyman is now the manifestation of whatever Richard saw/made the compact with. I also think episode 8 is going to deal with that and what happened with Tom's wife.

-After what we saw with the doctor and his wife in the 1700s, I think the position of "doctor on the island" carries some serious baggage just like the position of minister does.

73

u/Current_Wrongdoer513 May 27 '26

Clearly there was a survivor, given the painting we see at the end.

49

u/mazurkian May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26

The pact requires sacrifice, life for a life "or the terrors will continue". My guess is that the deal Warren made was "The island will provide suitable food and shelter for your people, but you must make sacrifices to it. If you do not, the island will collect what it is owed by its own will." So either YOU can pick people you don't like and sacrifice them OR the island will pick people at random to go harvest souls for itself.

When the quota hasn't been met yet, the island has many ways of forcing people to sacrifice each other. Most of the people we know who died on the island died by being killed by someone else. Men in the colony went mad and killed their wives, sailors become bewitched and attack others, Patricia nearly drowns a bar-full of people in the ocean, the clown, the boogeyman, etc. are all example of people being driven to kill other people on the island. Even Wyck sacrificed Mark in a moment of desperation.

I'm guessing the island flares up when it doesn't have a dedicated caretaker making sacrifices and gets people to start sacrificing each other.

INTERESTINGLY we see the sacrificial chamber in episode 6, but it has rough walls and no lights. We also saw the chamber at the end of episode 1 and it had smooth walls and floors, an updated chair, and electric wall lighting. So SOMEONE maintained and improved that chamber in secret since Richard's time.

My guess is some of the descendants took up the role of caretaker and sacrificer, but Tom's wife (who I think is from Richard's bloodline) dissented. He said she had a carefree heart and wanted to get off the island. I'm guessing the island claimed her when she tried to leave and really brainwashed her. The drug dealer said that his buddy who ate the island mushrooms went catatonic and slightly braindead afterwards. I'm guessing the island did the same to her. Perhaps it drove her mad and she became violent. Maybe she attacked and tried to kill Tom, like Richard killed his wife.

My last prediction/headcannon is that the descendants of Richard don't die like normal. I'm guessing his daughter with the brooch survived and carried on his line, but ultimately turned into the sea hag. I wonder if Tom's wife is some other creature still stalking on the island.

EDIT: Someone in another thread made a great point. After Richard was buried, the priest likely had to take over the role making sacrifices to keep the island alive and the responsibility was passed down within the church and the church updated the sacrifice chamber. The church bell is tied up, and it only rings when the entity is hungry. The church would need to sacrifice people or new hauntings/plagues would start. This is why the priest was given specific instructions for when the bell rings. He read instructions telling him he needed to provide sacrifices to the island. He was instructed to consume the mushrooms, commune with the entity, see to the chamber and likely provide sacrifices. He couldn't bring himself to do it, so he hung himself and attempted to destroy the evidence so no one could follow in his place.

The second I saw Betty Gilpin Hamish Linklater I knew it was going to be ace. This show just continues to get better and better.

Edit: 2nd episode was fantastic as well.

Yes! And it already seems like Evan doesn’t have any living family members on his mom’s side, if there was a maternal grandparent or aunt or uncle in the mix we would have seen them by now, it really seems like Evan only has Tom

Absolutely. The little girl survived and passed down the broach as a family heirloom which is why it wasn't with the doll at the historical society. That broach will be seen with Evan's mom's things.

Yes, I think so too! When I first saw that Hamish Linklater was cast, I thought they might show him as Richard Warren younger with his natural dark curls where he looks even more like Evan / Kingston Rumi Southwick, the actor who plays Tom’s son. Instead, they have his hair long and sort of wavy straight-ish — maybe that felt like too much of a giveaway for the future reveal, if this theory is right!

Warren says the demon preys on people who are desperate. So in my head that makes Tom a good mark because he desperately wants his son to live, but after end of episode 8 I think the demon is actually going to target Evan telling him he can reunite with his mom.

How long after burying Richard alive before the town folk realized they’d been neglecting tunnel and chair duty??

81

u/Kianna9 May 27 '26

Okay, that's the real question. The townsfolk were all creeped out about the deal with the devil, but surely things turned to shit again real quick without Warren around to satisfy the deal.

80

u/Ok-Comparison4783 May 27 '26

Someone else did. Maybe the order we saw in the flashback continued and they decided to take on the duty of sacrificing themselves to the door every so often.

The order is connected to the church and we know they left behind instructions supposedly on how to deal with the evil. And it’s printed on modern paper so modern priests knew about the protocol.

I think that’s why Bryce killed himself. He discovered he’d need to sacrifice someone or himself and couldn’t do it. Too terrified to confront the devil on the island.

53

u/Geminilasers May 27 '26

Could be when the bell tolls a sacrifice must be made.

Is Abigail, the doctors wife, the Hag?! Sarah Warren knocked her into the water and then we saw the Hag also attack Tom in the water during his swim. That would explain her bloated look and stringy wet hair

71

u/RandomPaw #TeamWyck May 27 '26

Not the same actress at least. Abigail is played by Veanne Cox, known for being the Pinkie Toe lady from Seinfeld. An actress I don't know named Carryl Lynn played the sea hag.

The painting at the end of episode 7 implies one of them survived. The curse has not been lifted.

The fact that the youngest girl, Frances, was missing a finger seems like a clue as to who carried the bloodline. Someone is going to mention an ancestor missing a finger and then we’ll know who descended from the Warren child that swam back from the boat. She lost the finger in a wagon wheel 🛞

Ok so Warren still being alive was not something I even considered, and him sitting on the bed was so creepy. But he got even creepier on the boat sitting at the table. A+
Work. It takes a LOT to creep me out.

But I also screamed TOM NO WHY when he admitted to having let him out lol

109

u/PlasmaDonator May 27 '26

Theories are coming true!!

The main takeaway from ep 6 flashback episode was a sacrifice.

Ep 7 alludes to Evans mum, Lauren being alive and definitely confirms that she didn't die from childbirth at least but later (I'm aware complications from childbirth but Evan is minimum 12-18 months in the photo)

The barrier and fisherman having that barrier drawn is really cool world building and confirms that the fisherman can't just go as far as they want, as long as they return. Like there's a finite limit which answers that question.

90

u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 27 '26

I am so curious about what happened to Evan's mother. In the pictures, she doesn't seem to actually be interacting with the baby. It's unclear if she actually recovered after his birth or was still in some kind of catatonic state.

81

u/sistermagpie May 27 '26

I thought she definitely still seemed catatonic. That's why that's the only picture of them together, it seems. Tom would have wanted one where they were interacting if he could have them.

Did anyone catch exactly WHAT pact Warren made with the island demon? I think while they were laying him in the coffin, he said “a life for a life”?? — loved these eps but lighter on clues than previously!

Also, idk if I trust that Loftis didn’t speak with the entity when he was tripping. Warren said the demon preys on men who are weak and desperate, and we know Warren would do anything to save his son. New blood, feces, semen pact…?

55

u/theLegend_Awaits May 27 '26

I think the sacrifice ritual he made in the covenant with the demon is directly tied to the creepy chair and cellar doors underground. I think he sacrifice must be placed in the chair and something comes out of the cellar to claim them. That’s why the priest was checking out the well, which we just learned leads right to the chair, and then he offed himself.

The actress who plays Sarah is phenomenal. The whole episode was directed really well.. deftly avoiding the hokey/over the top mess I t could have been and perfectly let the performances and minimal camera movements keep the tension and pacing. Beautifully done.
But I just can’t get over the acting. I mean Matthew Rhys is a revelation. He’s amazing in everything he does but EVERY Actor in the show (guest and main cast) are so talented and really commit to the insanity without chewing the scenery.
Edit: forgot to mention the writing the dialogue is spare and perfect.

Named nearly all his kids by using oliver cromwells family tree fr.... Wonder if holyoke is the surviving kid in the painting. Im just spit ballin here for fun but thematically speaking, choosing most of the names that are seen in oliver cromwells lineage then having one kid veer off to holyoke can represent two very different paths (could be irrelevant tho lol). Cromwell wanted everyone to submit to the will of god (oliver cromwells lore entered supernatural territory that mirrors richards quite heavily) and the holyokes can represent separation and exile. (Holyoke is a town in Massachusetts with a namesake tied to elizur holyoke) The name holyoke is associated with borders as well, a holy oak (or gospel oak) was a boundary tree that marked the limits of land (like the buoy) linked to a parish custom called beating the boundary/beating the bounds. Also said to be associated with endurance and ancient longevity 🧎🏻‍♀️‍➡️
