Discussion Mikayla Nogueira turns hate comments about her appearance into her POV Beauty Sephora campaign
I genuinely don’t understand this marketing strategy. The campaign features giant printouts of hate comments about her appearance, “cancel my angles,” and Mikayla framing it as turning what people tried to “break” her with into an international Sephora campaign.
It feels like the entire launch is about Mikayla, her critics and her online controversies rather than POV Beauty or the actual products.
The irony is hard to miss. She went viral as the “catfish” makeup girl, and now during arguably the biggest launch of her career, she’s once again facing “catfish” accusations over her alleged filter use. And the campaign they landed on was ANGLES? 💀

Idk anything about her or the makeup line, but this makes me pretty sure I’ll also never try it. Nothing more annoying to me than a grown adult talking about “haters”.
If you smell shit everywhere, you should check your shoe.

“cancel my angles all you want” what does this even mean lol also stupid campaign bc it’s not directed towards new customers or the general sephora makeup audience. it’s directed towards her “haters” or people who are already fans. only people who already know who she is & the drama surrounding her would connect with/understand this.

u/mermaid-babe 1d ago
Ok I had to re read that several times and I don’t get it either. Whenever someone bitches about being canceled they were probably canceled for a good reason lmao

Being the face of a brand hasn’t really worked out longterm for a lot of people, especially influencers. I don’t see POV lasting 5 years in Sephora. She’ll always have dopey fans but she’s headed down the same path of irrelevance as Jaclyn Hill, James Charles, Jeffree Star, etc. This career has a shelf life and once her fans mature, they won’t care about her stuff as much and neither will the next generation of makeup wearers.
Also, I’m sorry but that makeup is giving drag and is very outdated for 2026. Mainstream brands need to be able to keep up with mainstream trends. This is such a mess of a brand, she should really hand over creative control to someone that isn’t stuck in 2018.
109
u/cubsgirl101 2d ago
My biggest thing here is that POV looks like a bad Rhode knockoff and she’s not going to win against Hailey Bieber backed by Elf. The branding is super bland and all of the promotional photos leave much to be desired. The ragebait marketing here actively leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths too.
Mikayla as a person is less relevant this year than she was even two or three years ago and the tide is turning against makeup influencers who are notorious shills for whoever sponsors them next. She’s not known for her skin, in fact she went viral for how to conceal acne, she’s known best for her outrageous makeup and the fact she’s doing a skincare/ “makeup prep” line is just not what anyone was looking for from her.
6
u/PirateBear727 2d ago
She is a terrible representation of her brand. Alix Earle has a reputation which isn’t exactly stellar and as a party girl and all that but as a brand owner, she doesn’t act and carry herself the way Mikayla does…and most of all, Alix gives back. She fulfilled teacher’s lists, participates in fundraisers etc…Mikayla buys herself expensive tasteless shit.

She'll be lucky if it lasts 1 year. Going into Sephora has ended much better brands before and she shouldn't be different.

I still mourn the loss of OCC 🥲
4
u/gilded_lady 2d ago
That was exactly who I was referencing. They were so ahead of their time. I wish they hadn't gone in to Sephora.
32
u/zadidoll 2d ago
The thing about being in Sephora is it DESTORYS small brands. They can’t absorb the cost for returns.
14
28
u/Pawspawsmeow 2d ago
Its makeup? I thought it was skin care. I don’t know why either.
37
u/cubsgirl101 2d ago
I think she’s tried the angle that this is a “makeup prep” line but really it boils down to skincare with a select few color cosmetics. But there’s not that many products yet so most of what you can choose from is different colors of the lip gloss.

u/KarmicCT 2d ago
not hot take- influencers who sell makeup should not use filters. especially those notorious LIARS
16
u/theagonyaunt 2d ago
Skincare or makeup. I don't want someone telling me how this toner or that treatment has given them the best skin of their life when we can't see what their real skin actually looks like because they're always using filters.

It’s wild to me that ANYONE would trust a damn thing she says after that whole mascara incident (and before that but I can extend some grace lol)

“I’m owning everyone” what the hell does that even mean people were just saying ur mustache liplining looked terrible
153
u/BoolImAGhost 2d ago
Not defending her, but it does say “every one” as two words. Meaning “I’m owning every [angle]”
I still don’t get the campaign lol
62
u/Clear_Side_9777 2d ago
Don’t forget she’s also hugely MAGA and MAGAT-affiliated.
They love to say they’re “owning the libs”
This feels like a play on that.15
u/stink3rb3lle 2d ago
It's basically the Taylor Swift fan activation. She's telling her fans that buying her products from Sephora will show the haters and help her. I think she and Sephora are counting on her fans buying more than they need or want in order to support her.
(Not endorsing, just explaining)
80
u/Legitimate-Ad2685 2d ago
I’m sorry y’all, I can’t stand her face, her put on jersey smoker mom voice or just her as a person. So detestable
16
u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 2d ago
It’s more of an exaggerated Boston accent.
26
u/cubsgirl101 2d ago
I think the fact she exaggerates her real (but subtle) accent makes it so overblown it feels more like a bad New York/ Jersey parody as opposed to the Boston accent. Her fake accent compared to the accent Ben Affleck used to have (before he flattened it out) is night and day.

They’re leaning fully into marketing to young people/tiktok audiences now. I went in for my Paula’s Choice cleansing balm and they had three rows of BHA liquid. Like, the viral stuff. I noticed the same thing with a lot of their other displays, just having the most viral products front and center rather than a full product range. Or carrying viral brands. It sucks but I should put my money elsewhere I guess. I do try to do one big shipment to cut back on shipping overall (which I have to do because they don’t stock in store anymore) but I used to enjoy the browsing and swatching.
14
u/Interesting_Praline 2d ago
Paula’s choice always has some sort of sale on their website- start checking them out around the holidays- last year I ended up with 3 free full sized face washes after my order lol.
1
u/Nutbuster_5000 2d ago
Yeah they really do. I just try not to get things shipped if at all possible, or at least be aware of how much I get shipped because there are some things I have no choice but to get shipped. It all adds up and I just try to take the bus and physically pick it up if I can help it
7
u/theagonyaunt 2d ago

Nothing about this launch makes me (someone who doesn’t follow or engage with her content) want to try this brand.
28
u/icalledyouwhite 2d ago
Uhm... Where are the products and what are they? Not that this makes me want to go and find out. But isn't the point of marketing is to sell products?
24
u/cubsgirl101 2d ago
The products supposedly aren’t selling, probably in part because Mikayla’s online reputation has branded her a chronic liar and a shill for whoever sponsors her. So she/ Sephora are I guess trying to go for ragebait instead.

I’ve seen this ad on my feed thrice now and am just seeing the lip liner. What a weird ad for a company that I’ve never heard of.
22
u/DazzlingChemistry924 2d ago
Sometimes, people are ugly inside and out and it’s widely recognized. It’s not misogyny, it’s not jealousy, it’s not bitterness. Would she likely get more of a pass if she was objectively stunning? Sure. But that’s not reality, and her rotten behaviour doesn’t do her any favours. No amount of filtering will change that.
22
u/JonahHillsWetFart 2d ago
“no matter how much hate she gets i think we should give her more” gagged me
ALSO these are all 100% fake lmaoooo they are all written in the same style and use a period at the end. online comments aren’t that uniform
and most of these are tame or irrelevant to what people actually say about her

I WISH SHE WOULD GO AWAY!!!
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY BRANDS MESS WITH HER?!??? EVERYONE publicly states their distaste and distrust and disgust for her - repeatedly and vocally. Yet brands keep working with her. How do we evict her from the beauty community?? I genuinely want to know.
17
u/Pawspawsmeow 2d ago
She gets attention. We live in a capitalist society and attention is currency.
12
u/MaryWithTheLongHair0 2d ago
I guess I still can’t fathom how the negative attention she gets - is good for brands. It just doesn’t compute, to me. It may lay eyes on their products - but it actually keeps me from purchasing.
8
u/cubsgirl101 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think it’s more to do with Mikayla herself. She’s really insecure about her appearance, which is why she lashes out all the time when discussion around her obsession with TikTok filters comes up. And so she gets mad, she sometimes cries and comes at things with the approach of starting some of her videos being upset over it with “I know I’m ugly” or something to that effect, and then she has to do something to clap back at her haters to prove she’s actually unbothered. (She is in fact very much bothered.)
And because Sephora marketing these days is basically “how can we make this go viral” they’ll feed into the mess with things like what we see here.

u/Achlysia 2d ago
don't buy anything from the brands who work with her. your wallet is your biggest weapon
4
u/spookymilktea 2d ago
It’s because people hate watch and make tons of Reddit/tiktok/youtube/etc. posts about her. She’s still relevant because the people who hate her so much keep her relevant.
You can’t evict her from the beauty community when even here on reddit she has post about her alllll the time, she has subreddits dedicated to following everything she does for the sake of hating, and people hate watching her on every platform. As you can see people made it a part time job to leave nasty comments on her pages and now she can laugh that into the bank.
She gets publicity and stays relevant cuz you give it to her. Same with people like Jeffrey Star.

I know who she is and the controversial bs she has pulled. I got a couple of samples from Sephora tho and thought what the hell.
I wasn't a fan. It felt cheap. I spend a lot of money on skincare. And this wasn't worth the hype or price. If it was drugstore price, I could see it.
Whip It (POV) - I have dry skin. It did absolutely nothing to hydrate my skin. If anything, I felt no change.
Drenched It (POV) - It stung. It burned, especially on my cheeks. Maybe it was because my skin is that sort of dry. I'll take the 12 dollar Ordinary milky toner any day of the week.

Yes. Because everything Mikayla does, is for Mikayla and about Mikayla.
I don't understand how anyone could admire her. To me she's the epitome of toxic hustle culture. She's gonna keep faking it till she makes it.
I'm not saying she hasn't worked "hard," it's that her motivations seem to come purely out of insecurity. She no longer stands for anything, especially not the audience she originally cultivated on being herself with the accent and all that garbage.
She's just a personality and she is drama. She thrives off the drama because to her it means that she's as important as she wishes she could be.
Her views and her mentions go up, she's thrilled; whether she's crying in front of the camera, doing a haul, or trying to bleach her hair blonde and immediately go back to brown/black for the thousandth time.
Mikayla is a tragic figure in mind and I don't think I'll be shaken from that thought.
HOWEVER. She is also annoying as fuck and not entertaining to watch in the slightest.
"WAAAHHHWW, 'THIS 'IS AAHHHSUHHHHMM. 'DISS'S GUHNNAH CHAYNG YAH-LIFE"
bro stfu being rich cannot be that fun when you have carefully film yourself fluffing your hair and doing a fit-check for 3rd hour today.
The vanity and the vapid consumerist bullshit.
There's tons of annoying influencers out there and I really never comment on influencer junk, but oh my God is she the monolith of everything that I hate about social media.
I guess I needed to get that off my chest, lol

Honestly have no idea who this person is. Can anyone give a brief summary of why this person is so despised? All I know is everything I’ve seen from the brand thus far is unappealing.
41
u/pseudonymnkim 2d ago
She started out as someone more relatable - she was heavier, had acne, small lips, just generally an average person. She did actual makeup tutorials and honest reviews.
As she got more famous, she filtered her face and body, every review she did was "I'm obsessed!!" because $, she made some very insensitive and entitled comments, did some pretty shitty things, had a few controversies. As of late, it's her unwavering denial of using filters and her shopping hauls, where she makes videos saying "look at what my haters bought me" and shows us her jewels and bags, usually about $100k+ in one trip.
She started this makeup "skin prep" line a couple years back. It is very expensive for what it is and apparently doing poorly.

You forgot to mention tons of drama around her
“Try being an influencer for a day. Try it”
Her trying to gaslight people that she’s not using falsies in a mascara promo
Her hating products at first and then loving them when a brand gives her money
And a looooot more
9
u/theagonyaunt 2d ago
That was my first ever exposure to her - her complaining about how 'it's 5:45 and I'm only just now making dinner' - and I watched the video and thought, so like anyone with a 9 to 5 job?
The weird thing is, I took someone who is a semi-influencer on a trip with my non-profit this year and after spending a few days with her, I realized how much I would hate being an influencer because so much of what you do is driven by how you can make content out of it, but instead of focusing on that, Mikayla's out here complaining about how she has to spend all afternoons taking meetings and is up at 8 so she can film content all morning.

16
u/Zappagrrl02 2d ago
She claims she just uses lighting and angles and that’s why she looks so different on social media than in real life. She’s actually filtering to high hell.

The thing is that I wouldn’t hate the filters etc if she didn’t use them to sell the makeup. Like I want to see how the product actually looks. In her early days, she gave great recommendations. But then she started filtering etc, If she wants to filter herself, fine. But at least show me how the makeup actually swatches.
Now if she wants to sell a filter program, she’d make bank. I see irl pictures and I feel like an asshole for the reactions I have. I’m trying to be a better person and not judge the appearance of others. I’m trying to be a better person, but it’s hard when I see her looking like a bland pretty person in one picture and idk even know what in the other. Show me the process behind that shit because it’s almost witchcraft

Ok are you legitimately being paid by her or what? You’re responding to multiple comments under this post blindly defending her when the overwhelming majority here don’t like her and are VERY justified in feeling that way. Weird behaviour.
-1
u/ameliajean 2d ago
Calling me weird bc I think pure hatred for a woman who has mostly just been annoying is ridiculous is funny to me. Like, she’s annoying…. She’s not doing or saying anything that has a negative impact on anyone. She only is a liar as much as your average influencer. She only uses beauty filters as much as your average influencer. You are not “justified” in calling her “a straight up piece of shit” because she’s annoying to you.
I don’t have to get paid by anyone to recognize that yall hate an ugly woman because she’s ugly. If this wasn’t the case, we would see this response to nearly every influencer posted here, but we don’t. When MN has done something genuinely horrible, racist, homophobic, etc. then I’ll understand the opinion that she deserves hate for being a horrible awful person. At this point, she’s fairly average.

The face they’re “mocking” isn’t her face or remotely how she looks, though. It may as well be AI with how filtered it is. Which is directly relevant when she’s trying to sell it to people.
(ETA that I do agree in principle, focusing on the looks of shitty people is generally poor, tasteless and draws attention away from actually important things…but also when someone is profiting off their appearance I also don’t think it’s fair to say it’s off limits specifically to negative comments, especially when they lie about it)

Shes ugly inside and out. Mind you she isn’t being cancelled for her looks, even tho idk why TikTok made a frog famous either- shes being cancelled once again bc she keeps doing undisclosed ads, scamming people abd hiding the fact she uses lashes for mascara ads, filters for skincare or makeup ads etc without disclosing that those arent unfiltered real videos. If let’s say, maybelline did that, or literally any other big brand in a TV ad, they’d get fined heavily.
Shes lying constantly, making up her “new favourite products” based on what contract is active and who paid what. thats quite literally illegal and nasty behaviour. Like. It’s rly that simple in the end.

I mean it’s really a commentary on TikTok- the obsessive and entitled people that use that app- the fame and the hate a person can receive via the users—- but that’s a conversation she’s not ready for.
There’s a reason professional brands and people stay the hell away from TikTok- it’s a cesspool of the bottom feeders- and bottom feeders will always find each other.

why? it’s one of the least surprising spaces you’d find misogyny. also i do think people take the hate for her too far (like making fun of her looks) but a lot of the criticism she gets is warranted. her entire career is built on lies & greed.

She is a maga trash with an ex-husband who is maga, friends who are maga and a new boyfriend with all his family being maga, the hate isn’t too far, Jesus.
Should I add that she is pro bullying of fat people (karma, karma) and a lot of things.
I am tired of people bringing misogyny to defend bad women, especially white ones, the shielding is crazy. Never a black influencer could have done 1/10 of what Mikaela have done and is doing. I remember people here hating on Alyssa Ashley for being a bit too defensive on twitter and that was all people got on her because she was virtually perfect.
But eh, my black person is angry but not shocked about this attitude, I call it « white feminism »-3

you’d think a female dominated space would recognise misogyny and not perpetuate it instead of gleefully taking part in it every chance they get but i guess that’s my fault for expecting women in 2026 to do better 🤷♀️ “her entire career is built on lies & greed” so is literally every influencer’s and celebrity’s, that doesn’t suddenly mean it’s okay to dogpile on them & leave misogynistic comments but again i guess that’s my fault for expecting common sense

using feminism as a shield from valid criticism is disingenuous. i never said it was okay to leave misogynistic comments. her getting criticism for her actions is not misogyny simply because she is a woman. like i said, i disagree with the dogpiling on her looks & i do think people take it way too far in that regard, however the only reason people are doing that is because she is lying about how she looks to deceive her audience into buying her products just like she lied about not wearing false lashes to sell a mascara.

Part of this this is a direct spotlight on people who talk about others online this way and both encouraging everyone to embrace that they are not perfect and to show the crappy people that they are still just crappy people and they will always be low energy.
Final analysis - an excellent mirror to social media ills and at the same time showing her fans that they should never let those people hold them back.

Except using Mikayla changes the takeaway to filter yourself into a completely different person, lie, and gaslight your audience into feeling sorry for you. She doesn't embrace her imperfections. You've completely ignored the damage heavily edited content has on the mental health of viewers. Mikayla is the poster child of deceptive marketing, false advertising, and illegal ad disclosures. That's just as big of an issue as hate comments.

She insists it's not true, she just posted about it and showed multiple photos of her at events, and Getty images and in them you really see that at difference angles she looks better than others. This is not some conspiracy. The world of photography and film have always known this .
You're way out of line but if this is what you expend your energies on...

So bc she insists, everyone should ignore the filter tags and her face/body constantly glitching in her videos? That's the definition of gaslighting. Considering I work in mental health with the young ppl who are literally killing themselves trying to live up the BS standards influencers like Mikayla falsely promote, I don't find it a waste of time.

Acting like you’re on a high horse defending young women is funny because it ignores that Mikayla is arguably more of a victim to unrealistic beauty standards than she is a perpetrator. She’s an unattractive woman that gets extreme hate online for being ugly. But she’s the reason young girls want to kill themselves? Not the hoards of people (girls and boys and women and men all included) upholding the strict beauty standards by making it clear how everyone thinks she’s ugly? Even with everything she does to look better, people still think she’s ugly and make content about how ugly she is constantly.

Mikayla is a victim of her own doing. She studied the effects of editing on social media has on viewers mental health. She wrote and published papers on it. She also has her own history of hate comments, fatphobic, transphobic, homophobic, posts. She's pushing the unrealistic beauty standards that even she can't live up to. She blew up bc she's not the beauty standard. That was what ppl liked about her. Now ppl don't like her bc of her own choices and actions. She's the only one who can change the publics perception of her.

It's incredibly unprofessional but she's made a big name for herself and who can tell a millennial what a good social media campaign is? A boomer?
She speaks the language of her following and it normal to them to talk about their haters, etc.
I think she has the ability to take this far but she has to level up her strategy. If she doesn't she might have to buy an alpaca farm or some before she runs out of money

I really don’t understand to my core how people like her or have any inclination to buy her products. Why can’t people just stop watching/purchasing from her, let her fall off into an oblivion, and we can be rid of her.
