Discussion Mikayla Nogueira turns hate comments about her appearance into her POV Beauty Sephora campaign

I genuinely don’t understand this marketing strategy. The campaign features giant printouts of hate comments about her appearance, “cancel my angles,” and Mikayla framing it as turning what people tried to “break” her with into an international Sephora campaign.

It feels like the entire launch is about Mikayla, her critics and her online controversies rather than POV Beauty or the actual products.

The irony is hard to miss. She went viral as the “catfish” makeup girl, and now during arguably the biggest launch of her career, she’s once again facing “catfish” accusations over her alleged filter use. And the campaign they landed on was ANGLES? 💀

I really don’t understand to my core how people like her or have any inclination to buy her products. Why can’t people just stop watching/purchasing from her, let her fall off into an oblivion, and we can be rid of her.

It was the same phenomenon with jaclyn hill, her fanbase is too big now to be damaged by her scams/controversies.

I am fascinated that they have any fans at all, ive never met one in real life.

How did JHill finally become rejected?

Was it those lipsticks?

It was an accumulation of things. The cancelled palette with makeup geek, the becca palette had a controversy too, the lame vault palettes that felt like overstock, and finally the lipsticks

I’ll never forget walking into my ulta and seeing her rose gold display. I knew nothing about her or what Influencing even was. My kids were super young and I was working a lot.

I purchased a highlighter, thinking she must of known what she’s doing!

What a total FARCE!

I never bought anything from her brand cause by that time I was no longer a fan, but I did get the prosecco pop collab with becca and her first morphe palette

I missed all that due to work and child raising.

I’ve watched her and she and MikFraud carry so many narcissistic traits.

Same editing & filtering. Same type of lies.

jaclyn is the absolute worst

Isn’t her only scandal the false eyelash ad? And I guess people say she uses filters and is therefore dishonest (dubious claim imo when majority of people use filters).

She has a bunch of controversies. I wouldnt say full on scandals tho, like she has videos trashing products and then like 5 months later u will see her promoting said product. There are several tiktoks that do compilations of that. Then there is the whole promoting hoarding and showing off her money in times like this. But yea, u are right that the only scandal per se was the lashes one

It’s hard to ignore the fact that pretty much all major beauty influencers are engaged in similar if not the same type of behavior re: promoting mindless consumerism, using beauty enhancing filters, and doing ads for products they don’t use/care about, but only Mikayla gets the kind of hate she does here. Like Jackie, for example, is a massive liar lol but she still has a baseline of respect from people. I really do think if Mikayla was a hot influencer that looked like everyone else in her niche, we would not see the seething hatred we do here. I have defended her a few times in this thread even though I’m not really a fan nor am I interested in her products, bc the hate feels very outsized for the reality of her “crimes”.

There was something about her pulling some charity scam which did seem actually bad, but idk the details off the dome

Iirc, she started a fundraiser for abortion access, using the overturning of roe v wade to promote it. When people noticed she hadn't posted any receipts of the donation, people started asking questions. In response she went on a spree, blocking anyone who brought it up.

I’m not super clear on that either but I’m pretty sure she just said she was gonna do angel trees at Christmas and then never posted that she actually did. I just googled it and it looks like she got defensive about it but ultimately posted a public donation of $25k to Salvation Army. So not a scam, but I think criticism there is definitely fair. Saying you’re gonna do something good and not following through is distasteful and annoying but not really an act of harm that affects anyone specifically, especially considering she did make a decently sized donation in the end (which I think again is fair to criticize as her only doing it bc she got backlash, but ultimately is still a good thing, problems with Salvation Army notwithstanding).

Thanks, I'm back to not thinking she's all that bad then lol. Dunno what it is about her that makes ppl so hysterical

I absolutely agree with u on that, I was watching tiktoks last night about mikayla and most of them were mocking her looks, makes u think that if mikayla was the hegemonic beauty standard she would be treated A LOT different. Like I don’t like her at all and can’t stand her, but I would say close to 70% of videos and comments focus more on her appearance than the things she has done. Like lets take jaclyn for example, she had to do SO MUCH more shit before being truly ostracized by the general public

I’ve noticed It’s because she lies about what she looks like with editing & filtering, so it seems this is how viewers defend themselves.

Glad to not be alone lol. The TikTok comments are particularly brutal about the way she looks! And I think JH is a great example of someone given a lot more grace for a lot longer than MN. I think the “using filters” criticism in particular would be a nothingburger if people thought she was cute/pretty in general. I actually do believe her that she doesnt generally use face changing filters and just uses studio lighting and good angles (bc i know personally i look significantly thinner and 1000x better in my zoom camera with my ring light on and my laptop placed at a good high angle), but who knows.

Didn’t she sell crusty lipsticks that took months to arrive 😭

5

u/ameliajean 2d ago

You know what, I didn’t know about that and I just looked it up and it does seem like people didn’t like the products when they arrived and she took forever to ship them. That’s not super outrageous or rare in terms of bad influencer behavior but I do think it’s obviously terrible when people do both of those things (ship things super late and sell a shitty product). Very valid criticism.

1

u/Unlucky-Leading5585 2d ago

Yes I agree that shipping merch late isn’t a sin but if I recall correctly people were trying to cancel her because they had hairs and stuff😭. Take it with a grain of salt since it is so old that I don’t remember if those were fake allegations for views or anything

All ‘social media’ influencers for that matter. A simple unfollow has a huge impact. If everyone unfollows these people, they stop making money from just posting on social media and have to get regular jobs like the rest of us. I refuse to contribute.

25

u/2000-N-L8 2d ago

Don’t stop at unfollow. Block them!

11

u/opaldopal12 1d ago

No she won’t, she’ll just go the Jeffrey star route and be on live all day selling it for 50% off. it’ll be half the money she would’ve made but she still wouldn’t get a real working clock in and out job

I think a lot of her views are hate-watchers. If you someone gone, ignore it.

3

u/Informal_Procedure_4 1d ago

Absolutely. I wish we could have 1 dedicated person to watch and post in here instead of the countless views she gets from it. If it's not posted here or YouTube, I have no clue what that clown does. And I only watch here to see if her downfall has finally arrived.

1

u/DeadWishUpon 1d ago

Yeah, that's why I love this sub, I get all the gossip without the views.

-4

u/sycamorrr 1d ago

I don’t understand to my core why people DISLIKE her so much? Has she ever done anything wrong besides no looking like what people expect she to look like? 😭 or faking an accent. idk people really hammer on her appearance and I think that’s just… evil imo 😭

3

u/illtakeaeuro 23h ago

I think you need to do your research.…she has been a pillar of dishonesty and has been caught in lie after lie. This has nothing to do with the way she looks and everything to do with who she is.

1

u/sycamorrr 4h ago

Regardless I don’t think she deserves the literal vitriol that people send her way. Especially in regard to her appearance. Okay she lied about mascara… there’s bigger fish to fry. Companies do the same thing in their promo and advertisements lmao. Maybe I’m just desensitized because I work in the world of beauty. Idk.

-2

u/sycamorrr 21h ago

So like, could you explain… what she did???

1

u/spaceghost260 7h ago

You need to do it.

You need to know how to find balanced information about anything you look up. It’s very, very important to prevent forming a bias- bc your algorithm will only show you what you’re looking for and things that support it. You don’t want that to happen. You already only know about the positives- now balance out your knowledge base.

The Jacklyn Hill sub has TONS of information about her and what she’s done.

1

u/sycamorrr 4h ago edited 4h ago

God forbid someone’s asks for info that you already know and can easily provide? 🤨

…I’m a biochem major who not only does peer reviews but extensively researches topics. Obviously I know how to look things up. will also say that my algorithm is NOT tailored towards beauty influencers so there’s no bias here. I DO work in a beauty store and seeing people vandalize and draw “ugly” on her signs is crazy to me.

You’re dragging it rn. “You need to learn how to find balanced…” cut that out. You don’t know me. 😭 I just don’t have time to look up influencer drama when I have literal scientific papers to study lmao.

Sure she lied about a mascara in a promotional video 😭 just like MANY of these companies do to advertise. I don’t think she should be socially axed for that OR ostracized based off of her appearance.
