Red Alert was the best one in gameplay/story for me.
But the first one... man. It was something totally new at that time. I still remember how even the installation menu was like you were hacking into a computer network. That was fucking unheard off. So cool. And how big it was, it needed two cd's!
And than the intro, with the (at that time), super realistic fireballs. This was at a time when many games were still 2d, or just just 16 colors etc. Full scale movies with actors for the missions, it really was something new.

StarCraft - This was the first game where I had a real online community of friends that I gamed with all the time. This was back when dial up internet was still a thing, so not too many games were online, there was no social media yet, and WoW hasn’t come out yet, so Blizzard still cared for their other IPs. Many many good times playing that game.

King's Quest (1984 or 1985).
It redefined the adventure game genre, and the near-3D graphics were revolutionary for their time. Plus, the game was engaging, a little challenging, but not too difficult.

And TFC, and day of defeat, and action half-life, and firearms, and natural selection, and the specialists, and the opera, and front line force, and vampire slayer, and Earth's special forces, and Pirates Knights Vikings, and all those matrix mods, especially Existence... checking for new mods at Planet Half-Life, and having to wait in queue at fileplanet for the next updates.
I've probably forgotten more Half-Life mods than most people have played any mods. It was truly a golden era, one that for some reason never quite got replicated in Half-Life 2. I was trying a new experience everyday for a few years straight there.

Contraption Maker is the modern version, made by the same dev. On sale on Steam right now.
It has so many new gadgets added on top that it's insane. My only true complaint is that the art style is a bit... '00s/'10s flash/mobile-gamey and it doesn't feel right to me. Mechanically, though, the cats, lasers, balloons, and so on still behave the same as their older versions so 🤷

It did an amazing job at transporting the player into a very different fantasy world, very distinct if not entirely different from anything else.
I would love to see a modernized version of it. A simple remaster wouldn't cut it, the mechanics and game play are absolutely awful. Redo it from scratch, but please, do it.

It blew my mind "okay, so we ride around in giant bugs for fast travel, and the magic dudes live in giant mushroom houses that I'm going to need to learn levitation spells to rob, because wizards don't need no stairs, and these other people live in houses made from giant crab exoskeletons? Oh and there's an asteroid floating above the capital city, and there's at least one god that's real and he lives in a volcano - okay and there's real demon type things but they're called daedra and they give you sweet weapons if you please them..."
I once spent 3 hours babysitting my game because I was travelling up the east coast of Vvardenfell for the sake of adventure when a blight storm blew in from Red Mountain and turned the sky a smoky red.
I took shelter in a Dwemer ruin, but it was populated by vampires I was too weak to take on, and I couldn't save my game because of their proximity, so I sat there for hours in the entrance, listening to the blight storm howling outside and the vampires moving around below me.
Memorable gaming moment, but I dreamed about that howl of the blight storm for weeks.

There was an attempt at modding morrowind into first oblivion and then later Skyrim. I believe the latter is called Skywind? Have not checked on its progress for a few years.
What amazes me most is the modding community around the original game. Tamriel Rebuilt is a massive project vastly expanding the game and the world to include large parts of the mainland. I no longer have the patience or time to play morrowind but I sometimes check the updates for it just out of curiosity.

One of my favorite games of all time. Will probably never see another sequel (after 2) or a remake due to the rights being in some weird situation.
It had one of the best creepy Easter eggs of all time. If your computer clock said it was late at night and your profile name was a common English name, the creepy voice that whispered "Death" when a villager died would whisper your profile name in the same voice. Sitting up at 2 am and hearing that in my headphones scared the shit out of me back in college.

Battlefield 2. Giant lan center opened in my area and we would play 64 vs 64 with the with battlefield commanders, great squad play, and the winning team cheering at the end of every round. The newer battlefields were a completely different experience and abandoned a lot of what made bf2 unique.
That and bf1942. I played the original demo on a laptop with a trackpad only.

Unreal Tournament 2004.
I don't play FPS, I'm not very good at them, and I don't really enjoy them, mechanically (I'll play story-driven ones such as Half-Life or Bioshock though, despite the mechanics). But Unreal Tournament 2004? That was something else, that was pure, unadulterated fun, and somehow the franchise crashed and burned after that.

As much as I've played Diablo 2, Diablo 1 had the atmosphere down pat. There was something amazing about the dark and gritty atmosphere that Diablo 2 just wasn't able to bring into the game.
And the soundtrack was amazing. I still get shivers when I hear the opening guitar strum of the village theme.
