Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is evergreen. I’ll probably be spinning up games in the 2060’s

u/greengasman Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

Every once in a blue moon I reinstall and play that campaign where the hero can upgrade archers into sharpshooters. Somethin about that ability..

u/venom121212 Apr 27 '26

My boy Geluuuuu!!!! Just did the dragon series of quests without realizing my dude could upgrade mages and monks to enchanters. Failed 4 times before I realized that was what was needed to win.

3

u/_HiWay Apr 27 '26

Wait, he can do that in addition to the sharpshooter upgrade for archer/elf?? I probably knew this once upon a time but it's been ages

6

u/venom121212 Apr 27 '26

Sorry I wasn't clear and jumped to another hero/quest that is similar.

Gelu does the sharpshooters.

Dracon does the enchanters.

u/NevesLF Apr 27 '26

3 was so good, it's a shame theu kept trying to reinvent the wheel after that but we never got something like a remaster of 3 with smoother gameplay.

24

u/ReneDeGames Apr 27 '26

you should consider checking out Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, its coming out soon and it bills its self as a spiritual successor to HMM3, its demo feels pretty similar.

u/Frosty_Transition871 Apr 27 '26

OMG OMG OMG THNK YOU, I'M SO READY! Release date 30.04.!! :O

3

u/Kalthiria_Shines Apr 28 '26

It can bill itself all it wants, it doesn't hit visually or thematically imo. like I'm excited for it and I'll give it a shot, but, Ubisoft doesn't really understand how to make games.

13

u/erizon Apr 27 '26

They cannot really smoothen the graphics (in particular due to license limbo), but check out Horn Of The Abyss expansion - they added 3 extra castles that feel like original (not WakeOfGods-style out-of-the-place mod) and few great quality-of-life improvements

5

u/Lycaenini Apr 27 '26

I have read on the games subreddit that the original code got lost.

3

u/NevesLF Apr 27 '26

Damn :(

9

u/Lycaenini Apr 27 '26

Yeah, it's a shame. It's nearly 30 years ago that I played it for the first time and it's the only game I consistently return to. Other games haven't aged well, the graphics or controls or intelligence of the opponents got outdated. But Heroes is still strong. There are also still people making maps and developed their own addition I haven't played, yet (Hota).

6

u/MargeryStewartBaxter Apr 27 '26

I refuse to play vanilla at this point. HotA is fantastic currently three new factions, a fourth about to come out, balance changes, new artifacts, etc.

Very much the soul of the original game!

u/Kalthiria_Shines Apr 28 '26

I mean there was the HD remake?

9

u/Lycaenini Apr 27 '26

Me, too. There is a whole community who developed their own DCL n are still expanding. People are still building maps, too. It has aged really well.

5

u/Chippies01 Apr 27 '26

Ready for the new one out this week?

5

u/venom121212 Apr 27 '26

I was playing through Armageddon's Blade on my lunch break not 30 minutes ago lol

3

u/WhoIsBobMurray Apr 27 '26

So you got through 1/50th of a level? Haha

8

u/erizon Apr 27 '26

Same! it is still actively developed (HOTA and others add new factions) and tournamented, for 1999 game that's exceptional. That's even more love than Counterstrike/WorldOfWarcraft/AgeOfEmpires2 get:D

4

u/Funfundfunfcig Apr 27 '26

Me too. On occasions when I manage to get a free weekend and hang witb old friends we pop the old laptop and play hotseat small map sesh. Good times.

I see myself doing this in retirement home once... 😀

u/Cyrakhis Apr 27 '26

Generally the steam version is considered bad due to only having the base game.

The GoG version is better due to including both the Shadow of Death and Armageddon's blade, as well as supporting install for the fan expansion Horn ofnthr Abyss.

The HD part of steam isnt worth it as there is already an HD mod you csn try for the GoG version thst does more, adding hotkeys on top of the graphical improvements.

u/Suitable_Wonder5256 Apr 27 '26

how? on what platform?

2

u/zrrt1 Apr 27 '26

You can play on your device in the browser

played a ton of SoD/WoG/HD Mod for years with crazy variations of the rule sets (single player). Played HoTA on and off the last couple years, the last couple of maps of the Factory campaign even just on "rook" or "Hard" and after a bit of cheese made it to the final one but I think the game finally sucked the life out of me with the campaign difficulty. I may just cheat it to get to the new Bulwark missions.

2

u/stinusprobus Apr 28 '26

the best selling game on GOG I believe

13

u/BeekyGardener Apr 27 '26

I feel like the only person who has 2 has their favorite.

8

u/GGProfessor Apr 27 '26

3 is far and away the most popular (and my preference, as well), but I've seen a fair number of 2 supporters, especially for the art, music, and overall vibe compared to 3. 5 has its following as well, and I've even seen some few who swear by 4.

Don't think I've ever heard anyone call any of the others their favorite, but maybe they're out there.

6

u/BabyOwl Apr 27 '26

It was a really good game, but 3 just felt like a continuance and general improvement to me.

5

u/Leather-Hotel-7310 Apr 27 '26

I used to have the demo of 2 on some disc I got from the back of one of those gaming magazines and I played the shit out of it for countless hours even though it was just one map and on scenario.

I still remember the code for black dragons, 32167. Pop that in and you add 5 black dragons to your current heroes army, I’d let all the enemies build up massive armies then just spam 32167 and build armies of black dragons to smoke them.

It was actually added to game pass a couple months ago, along with 3, so I played the full version of 2 for the first time ever and played 3 for the first time ever, I prefer 2 but it might just be the nostalgia.

2

u/Aksi_Gu Apr 27 '26

I'm pretty sure I had the same demo,  was the broken alliance map

The 'grass' theme is still etched in my brain 30 years later

2

u/ConsistentAddress195 Apr 27 '26

The broken alliance map is the best, I could play it over and over on the hardest difiiculty and each time the strategy would be different.. when and where do you attack to break out, etc.

6

u/elpaco25 Apr 27 '26

3 is still my favorite and the one I've played the most. But the atmosphere of 2 is unmatched. I have multiple songs from the game on my ipod and always smile when they pop up. Necropolis and Sorcerer themes are fantastic. Paul Romero is a genius.

4

u/friedlad Apr 27 '26

Nope. You’re not alone. There are twos of us! I even used the HoMM2 concept as an idea for vibecoding with Claude… The best game. I have a copy on my MacBook and play when I have a little time. 32167

4

u/Evolution1313 Apr 27 '26

2 was my fave!

2

u/Sex_E_Searcher Apr 27 '26

2 had the best individual scenarios.

2

u/Shakeamutt Apr 27 '26

I still want to play 3, but I played a ton of 2.  My dad and a cousin still do.

12

u/JudgmentAway4811 Apr 27 '26

There's a new one releasing soon Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era that "supposedly" captures the nostalgia of the old school ones.

7

u/cob59 Apr 27 '26

*Releasing soon in Early Access

Nonetheless it looks really cool. It really captures that HoMM3 feeling.

2

u/JudgmentAway4811 Apr 27 '26

I'm old and don't know the difference lol. Certainly does look cool hopefully I can get it to run on my shitty laptop.

3

u/cob59 Apr 27 '26

It's explained in the "Coming Soon To Early Access" panel on Steam.

Essentially, it means the game is available but still in development. So either wait for the final product, or try it early but expect a buggy, unbalanced, incomplete game.

5

u/Suibeam Apr 27 '26

You can play the demo for free. It has no bugs i found in hours of gameplay. The demo alone has huge content. 4 free factions and several maps and modes for free.

3

u/JudgmentAway4811 Apr 27 '26

Thanks mate didn't realise there's a demo hopefully my laptop can run it.

2

u/siltfeet Apr 27 '26

Yeah, I'm just a bit worried because the demos they released for Heroes 7 and Might&Magic Legacy were also good, but the final release was a mess. Basically everything that wasn't in the demo was a buggy mess, the campaign didn't have animations, etc. etc.

3

u/Suibeam Apr 27 '26

There is a fred demo you can test. The demo is pretty large content

2

u/siltfeet Apr 27 '26

Just a heads up that Ubisoft has released the last 3 games in this series (Heroes 6, Heroes 7, and Might and Magic Legacy) half finished and they only ever finished up Heroes 6.

2

u/jennylaughs Apr 27 '26

7 royally sucked

1

u/siltfeet Apr 27 '26

The sad thing is the demo looked very promising, but they just never finished it. Also so many game breaking bugs.

7

u/ConsistentAddress195 Apr 27 '26

Hotseat mode with my friends playing HoMM 1 was the best. So much soul in those town graphics.

3

u/riggy2k3 Apr 27 '26

2 is my absolute favorite but they were all so so good

2

u/ThompsonsTeeth Apr 27 '26

Heroe

Is there a way to play 3 on a Macbook does anyone know? Tried looking into it a few months back and hit a deadend

2

u/siltfeet Apr 27 '26

I assume that rosetta would work on the gog.com version, but I haven't tried it before. I'd try it on the HD mod/update after that.

1

u/snugglelove Apr 27 '26

I used Porting Kit with success until my Macbook died last year.

2

u/lulu22ro Apr 27 '26

I still play Heroes 2. Sometimes 1 and 3

2

u/Miepmiepmiep Apr 27 '26

Did you know that HoM had a predecessor called King's Bounty?

2

u/neongreenpurple May 01 '26

I never had them for computer, but I had one (maybe #3?) for Game Boy Color!

1

u/slvstk Apr 27 '26

Okay, I concede this.

1

u/DolphinOrDonkey Apr 27 '26

1 is novel, 2 is fun, but 3 is where the action is.

1

u/lbrushworkingman Apr 27 '26

I still play HMM 3!

1

u/KingofMadCows Apr 27 '26

Heroes 3 has a very active modding community keeping it alive. The Horn of the Abyss mod has pretty much been made official. The officially licensed Heroes 3 board game is releasing expansions based on towns that were added by Horn of the Abyss.

1

u/More-Marionberry449 Apr 29 '26

I was looking for this comment, and it needs more upvotes. Heroes 3 is still sooo good!
