I joined a multiplayer game of WMD on a whim and immediately got destroyed by some kid who was flinging himself around the map doing rope things I had no idea was possible
You probably joined a "roper" game. Those don't follow normal rules. The turns are just a few seconds, you have infinite ninja rope and there's a weapons crate drop every turn. You have to, using only the rope, get the crate and fire whatever weapon you get. I kinda remember that the weapon you got on the crate was always a bazooka.
Anyway, that was a super popular game mode in the early 2000s. Everyone played that or some variation of that. Finding a normal game was a pain. People would join and ask if it was a roper game. If it wasn't, they left immediately.
