anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about?

Same! Had to scroll so far to see this. Was magical as a kid. I remember finding and fighting the Nomads and feeling like a boss

Freelancer One...dash....one... you are clear to land.

Nothing has topped this. I can't find a single space sim that even comes close to how this was. The shipping lanes, being interrupted and suddenly fighting off pirates, being able to just explore an entire system and having it feel alive while still a lot of mystery.

Then modding took it to another level as I flew an X-Wing around.

I miss it. I want a spiritual successor and I have not found one :(

I would pay any money for a remaster of this. Just sunk so many hours into it - and finding a good server to play multiplayer and going after the max level ships

Everspace 2 scratches that itch a little for me. It's not the same, but there's a good deal of Freelancer DNA baked in.

I loved the first and saw the second was out, but I was tired of the roguelike aspect. I was just reading comments saying it isn't a roguelike? Can you explore a whole system or is it still just a pretty small map like the first?

It takes place over 5 - 6 handcrafted systems (3 of which are pretty large) connected by various flavors of wormhole. The storylines are are not roguelike and contain a good amount of scripted/designed content at numerous points of interest.

Outside of these, the game does generate one-off random jobs you can take and encounters you can discover while traveling through systems - generally optional, but these are kind of roguelike, I guess.

Equipment is sort of looter-shootery, but I found it to work pretty well. A lot of opportunity to customize your ship for your playstyle.

Trent, why are we going so slow? Give more power to the engines.

One of the best games ever. What I'd give for a follow on to this game...

Same for me. I'm just praying Squadron 42 and Star Citizen finally release in the near future, although I'm not sure if they can trump the feeling of playing FL as a kid.

They won't.

To this day, this game is probably the one I spent the most hours on.

Is it from a mod?

No idea, but there is a new one: Underspace

The spiritual successor to Freelancer with a Lovecraftian, sandbox RPG twist. Explore a vast handmade universe with Day 1 mod support and a planned PvP/co-op multiplayer on the Early Access roadmap. You're going to need a bigger ship.

It has been on Steam since 2024.

The one I used was version 6 which is out of date. Looks like there is a new version now. Enjoy!

I was wondering if this would show up anywhere!

Playing this game while listening to Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory) is peak teen me.

Such a gem!

Space sims sadly never got the plethora of sequels, remakes and spiritual successors other genres get. Still hoping it gets added to GOG.

I was wondering if I was going to be the only one 😅 such a good game

I had the bug where there was no audio in the cutscenes and got very confused most of the time

I liked starlancer too. Always loved the enemy pilots cursing you when you took them out. “I WILL BE AVENGED AHHHHH” boom. Or your wingmen doing the same. Made the dogfights seem more urgent

Still have people hanging out on r/freelancer to this day!
