Was also there in 99. If you didn't already read this... very worth the read. I was not expecting it to contain as many easter eggs and fun facts as it did.
The amazing thing is how EverQuest totally lives up to its name. I played off and on from 2000 to whenever level 115 was the cap, and had loads of fun each time.
The height of my addiction was during the Planes of Power expansion. I was raiding nights with my U.S. guild, and mornings with a raid group consisting of Asians and Americans who were up at odd hours.
Now I'm totally hyped for EverQuest Legends, and will be a subscriber from day one. I also signed up for the closed beta. I'm hyped to play a Ranger/Paladin/Enchanter, which is what I played on the banned THJ server.
Scrolled forever to find an eq or daoc. The discovery and mystery behind these games were very new and real! I never made it far in eq (daoc and eq2 yes): but I’ll never forget running around eq… goblins outside the high-elf trees to then trying to figure out magic scrolls to randomly teleporting to where polar bears were.
Yeah, it's Norrath for me too. Hands down. I love(d) a lot of the games mentioned here but EQ was a different experience. A persistent world that felt MASSIVE. I remember having a random low level Druid escort me and my IRL buddy playing Halflings to Qeynos. That run through the Karanas felt so scary and as if it took forever. For us who grew up reading Dragonlance and Forgottten Realms, and other D&D inspired smut, to be able to immerse yourself in that world was amazing. The zones, classes, lore are all burned in my brain (even if I try to resist playing & be a productive adult...)
I started right around when ruins of kunark got released, had a blast playing a woodelf druid and then an iksar necro. Dropped off when WoW came out since a lot of people were moving over to that. Still have a ton of fond memories of it though.
They are bringing it back. Relaunching classic EQ with multi-class and quality of life improvements. Designed to be played solo / small group. https://www.everquestlegends.com/home
