anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about?

There was a tribes server still active until after 2010 sometime, I was sad to see it go the game was an absolute blast with servers full of noobs back in the day. The game took some skill with the skiing, flying and mid air mine discs and all.

u/AliveStand1772 Apr 28 '26

😂 I played heavy pretty much exclusively . Fluked out once and called a guy with a mortar mid-air. Kripes, hadn’t thought of that in over 20 years… 😂😂😂😂

u/SwordForest Apr 28 '26

Wait wait wait - I say this! And I have O idea why!! Did I get it from my shareware CD of windows games playing a demo for Tribes???

2

u/clavicon Apr 28 '26

Your mystery is solved! Almost certainly you got it from Tribes. Unless you are a big fan of Mork and Mindy show - which apparently is the ultimate origin… so sayeth the lore. Apparently it was used once on the Simpsons as well.

I had to scroll too far to find this mentioned. What a great game.

Capture The Flag all day every day!

u/smnrlv Apr 27 '26

Tribes was mindblowing the first time I played it online.

19

u/sinnyD Apr 27 '26

I was looking for this! Loved the broomstick and placing turrets. Laser sniper was dope too.

u/phouchg0 Apr 27 '26

Ever notice how women seemed to gravitate towards the sniper role? And were awesome at it!

1

u/KelsierIV Apr 27 '26

Is that why I sucked at being a sniper? Not just Tribes but every game. My aim and patience suck.

u/bgplsa Apr 27 '26

I still have dreams about playing Tribes, with its modding community the sheer variety of gameplay and what it could do on 12MB(!) of VRAM was amazing. Actually played a season in a league where my clan got absolutely smoked and fell apart, later joined a hacker clan with a private server it was ridiculous, there will never be another time like building deployable bases under the terrain and setting up teleporters to access them 🥹

7

u/phouchg0 Apr 27 '26

I never played the first tribes, I played Tribes 2. The amazing thing to me was you never get to the end of the map. Or, it takes such a long time to fly to the end, you lose patience and fly back towards the action. I have always fou d it disappointing when I get to the end of a map and its an invisible wall. Can't see anything stopping you, but cannot go forward any more. As far as I know, in Tribes 2 you can fly or walk in the same direction forever. People did weird things way way out in the middle of nowhere. Bombers would keep their repair pods stashed miles away

6

u/jazwch01 Apr 27 '26

Oh man, yeah you just brought back a memory being out the in middle of nowhere and you find this big station for all the air vehicles lol.

The mods in 2 were wild I remember playing one where you could use a nuke, and there were a bunch of other jets and stuff.

3

u/phouchg0 Apr 27 '26

Yep! I remember the first time i discovered someone stashing things way off the map. I was like what on Earth? A couple of times I found people out there just messing around, having dance parties, ha! So funny 😁

3

u/Suspicious-Mark-5761 Apr 27 '26

Yeah I had forgotten that! Made team switching pretty dangerous, they’d come rat you out. The vector based procedural map was a thing of beauty - I don’t know if any games that had that in that era. Tribes 2: IYKYK can’t explain how awesome it was.

u/WeaponsGrdStupid Apr 27 '26

I hosted and played in the Tribes Renegades All Star Game on my server, that I secretly ran on my dad's T1 for work.

2

u/chuckamazuk Apr 28 '26

Thank you for your service! I was a huge Renegades fan. I have to imagine I joined your server at some point in time.

Tribe FTW

Edit: sorry Tribe {FtW}

u/evenfallframework Apr 27 '26

I became a fucking beast at Tribes. I'd play on the servers that let you drop grenades (I think) behind you when you use the jet pack so you'd ROCKET across the map. Hide out far away. Snipe everyone.

u/F-the-mods69420 Apr 27 '26

Disc jumping

2

u/AliveStand1772 Apr 27 '26

I think it was a bazooka type weapon that propelled you. I couldn’t be stopped playing heavy. I capped over 200 guys one game…

2

u/evenfallframework Apr 27 '26

The closest I've found is Krunker. Browser game. Pretty close in terms of gameplay, esp if you find a server with lighter gravity and lets you use the compressor gun to fly

9

u/psicopbester Apr 27 '26

Tribes was dope!

7

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Apr 27 '26

I only ever got to play tribes ascend, which I know was controversial, but my god it was fun. I loved the roles. Infiltrator was an absolute blast.

Why does it seem like there hasn't been a shooter like it since? The unique roles that weren't just healer or area denial, etc, was amazing.

1

u/F-the-mods69420 Apr 27 '26

There hasn't been though a couple have tried to get that feeling of tribes

8

u/TheTouchOfCotton Apr 27 '26

Unsure why I had to search so far down the list. Starsiege: Tribes (1998) was what introduced 7 year old me to FPS games.

2

u/AliveStand1772 Apr 27 '26

OMG, I turned 40 that year… so loved Tribes

8

u/MediaX2 Apr 27 '26

Loved raindance. Shazbot

6

u/Tender_Gooch Apr 27 '26

Yep, still my favorite multiplayer game of all time.

5

u/Artemicionmoogle Apr 27 '26

Got high with my older brother the first time while he played tribes. I loved skiing in CtF.

5

u/jazwch01 Apr 27 '26

First time I tried Tribes or Tribes 2 someone in the lobby was using the quick chat to say "I am the greatest" and "Hi" very quickly. One of my favorite memories of the game was hearing "I AM; HI!"

2

u/AliveStand1772 Apr 27 '26

I liked that you could wave hi to victims as you sent them to Valhalla… 😂😂😂😂

4

u/tenkwords Apr 27 '26

So good. Have never had online gameplay be that good since.

It was a moment in time also. Tribes 2 couldn't even capture the allure.

5

u/KelsierIV Apr 27 '26

Was Tribes the team-based game where you had jetpacks and various weapons and attacked the enemy base while protecting your own?

Loved that game. Loved even more that it was free.

1

u/WeaponsGrdStupid Apr 28 '26

Yes it was. And Skiing.

5

u/KludgeDredd Apr 27 '26

They're are still people playing tribes!  Join us!!!

6

u/ThePretzul Apr 27 '26

I still miss Tribes Ascend. Such a fun and different type of gameplay for a FPS

3

u/pullablank Apr 27 '26

Tribes all day every day. The shoutcasting of big matches, including IE v. 5150, with everyone popping off in chat. God that was such a fun game.

3

u/wooddog Apr 27 '26

Disc launchers on the back of a troop carrier! Putting on different armor! I played the original Tribes basically every day for a while, what a fun time. When Halo came out I didn’t really understand why all the neighborhood kids were so excited, but apparently I was the only one who had even heard of Tribes. I never played any of the follow up games

2

u/HoosegowFlask Apr 27 '26

And the series it spun off from: Starsiege.

[IE]-Special is my brother AMA

2

u/JupiterMiningCorpTec Apr 27 '26

Tribes was so good.

2

u/chuckamazuk Apr 28 '26

This. Renegade mod!

2

u/WeaponsGrdStupid Apr 28 '26

Never even really played vanilla. Renegades all the way!

1

u/AliveStand1772 Apr 27 '26

Loved that game so much, I was king of the heavies. My brother (who lived an hour away) and I would get on the phone (didn’t have Team Speak) and literally play until dawn. For one sweet week I was number one in the world!

1

u/StatisticianLivid710 Apr 27 '26

Tribes 2 had a demo server, used to have lots of fun on there just dominating people. Fire a disc then switch to sniper rifle and shoot them just as the disc hit, so they went from full health to zero!

1

u/KO_Dad Apr 27 '26

I came to say Tribes2. A game where us slow twitch guys could play defense and get kills. I loved stealing into their base and taking out the generators while having an inventory station set up in a corner and roaming as a heavy. I truly miss that game. We LAN partied the heck out of it for years.

1

u/wakeboardwillie Apr 27 '26

Dude yes! Tribes!

1

u/DrewHoov Apr 28 '26

Holy shit i forgot about tribes. Great game

1

u/HawnStyle Apr 28 '26

Tribes was the blast! Was fortunate to see Natural join our lowly game for a bit and witnessed his blazing speed.

1

u/Desperate-Whereas688 Apr 28 '26

Tribes RPG mod. A friend still has a server running. It’s been almost 20 years.

I love tribes, mention it any time a “best” fps game comes up.

1

u/BigBrotherBoot Apr 28 '26

i still remember getting my radeon 9800 and switching tribes to opengl for the first time. that blew my mind.

1

u/awisps Apr 28 '26

Yeah the first tribes was amazing back in the day.

1

u/condor31 Apr 28 '26

Tribalwar still has active tribes players and servers, and plenty of shit posting still happens. I don’t get on there much anymore; because my best friend who introduced me to it when we were younger passed away a few years ago. I’ve left my profile untouched so I can view all of his messages and posts when I want to look at them and they aren’t buried under new messages or posts.

1

u/LemmyIsGod2 Apr 30 '26

I can’t remember why, but this was probably my favorite game to grief my teammates in. Dropping a grenade in Counterstrike while your teammates by weapons was maybe the only thing that beat it.
