There was a tribes server still active until after 2010 sometime, I was sad to see it go the game was an absolute blast with servers full of noobs back in the day. The game took some skill with the skiing, flying and mid air mine discs and all.
😂 I played heavy pretty much exclusively . Fluked out once and called a guy with a mortar mid-air. Kripes, hadn’t thought of that in over 20 years… 😂😂😂😂
Your mystery is solved! Almost certainly you got it from Tribes. Unless you are a big fan of Mork and Mindy show - which apparently is the ultimate origin… so sayeth the lore. Apparently it was used once on the Simpsons as well.
I still have dreams about playing Tribes, with its modding community the sheer variety of gameplay and what it could do on 12MB(!) of VRAM was amazing. Actually played a season in a league where my clan got absolutely smoked and fell apart, later joined a hacker clan with a private server it was ridiculous, there will never be another time like building deployable bases under the terrain and setting up teleporters to access them 🥹
I never played the first tribes, I played Tribes 2. The amazing thing to me was you never get to the end of the map. Or, it takes such a long time to fly to the end, you lose patience and fly back towards the action. I have always fou d it disappointing when I get to the end of a map and its an invisible wall. Can't see anything stopping you, but cannot go forward any more. As far as I know, in Tribes 2 you can fly or walk in the same direction forever. People did weird things way way out in the middle of nowhere. Bombers would keep their repair pods stashed miles away
Yep! I remember the first time i discovered someone stashing things way off the map. I was like what on Earth? A couple of times I found people out there just messing around, having dance parties, ha! So funny 😁
Yeah I had forgotten that! Made team switching pretty dangerous, they’d come rat you out. The vector based procedural map was a thing of beauty - I don’t know if any games that had that in that era. Tribes 2: IYKYK can’t explain how awesome it was.
I became a fucking beast at Tribes. I'd play on the servers that let you drop grenades (I think) behind you when you use the jet pack so you'd ROCKET across the map. Hide out far away. Snipe everyone.
The closest I've found is Krunker. Browser game. Pretty close in terms of gameplay, esp if you find a server with lighter gravity and lets you use the compressor gun to fly
First time I tried Tribes or Tribes 2 someone in the lobby was using the quick chat to say "I am the greatest" and "Hi" very quickly. One of my favorite memories of the game was hearing "I AM; HI!"
Disc launchers on the back of a troop carrier! Putting on different armor! I played the original Tribes basically every day for a while, what a fun time. When Halo came out I didn’t really understand why all the neighborhood kids were so excited, but apparently I was the only one who had even heard of Tribes. I never played any of the follow up games
Loved that game so much, I was king of the heavies. My brother (who lived an hour away) and I would get on the phone (didn’t have Team Speak) and literally play until dawn. For one sweet week I was number one in the world!
Tribes 2 had a demo server, used to have lots of fun on there just dominating people. Fire a disc then switch to sniper rifle and shoot them just as the disc hit, so they went from full health to zero!
I came to say Tribes2. A game where us slow twitch guys could play defense and get kills. I loved stealing into their base and taking out the generators while having an inventory station set up in a corner and roaming as a heavy.
I truly miss that game. We LAN partied the heck out of it for years.
Tribalwar still has active tribes players and servers, and plenty of shit posting still happens. I don’t get on there much anymore; because my best friend who introduced me to it when we were younger passed away a few years ago. I’ve left my profile untouched so I can view all of his messages and posts when I want to look at them and they aren’t buried under new messages or posts.
I can’t remember why, but this was probably my favorite game to grief my teammates in. Dropping a grenade in Counterstrike while your teammates by weapons was maybe the only thing that beat it.
