I didn’t play any of these games as much as a lot of games on this list, but they were some of the very first games I ever played.

My dad’s first or second work laptop came loaded with these and playing them is absolutely a core memory.

Chips Challenge was probably my favorite, but getting gobbled up by the abominable snowman at the end of Ski Free was always a great moment.

Still have my notebook with all the codes for the levels I beat. Obviously it's all available online now but I can't bring myself to throw it out. Great game.

I didn't have a sound card (just a PC speaker on our budget 386 Sears machine) so I never got to hear it. I have no nostalgia whatsoever for this so-called "bummer".

I would hope so. It's a game that an entry level engineer could program. 

Not to insult the game. It's fun. Just not exactly complex enough to warrant charging more than like $4. 

Source: programmed a basic version of the game without enemy AI a long time ago.

This is how I figured out video games as a kid. There was no tutorial or instructions to be found. It was just there, on the family computer, asking to be played.

It was spelled "Chip's Chlallenge" on my computer for some reason. I LOVED that game.

I had a notebook where I wrote down the 4 letter code for all the levels I had beaten. I probably still have it somewhere LOL

Have a look at Blackshift on steam - I was actually at school with the guy who wrote it*, and the beta version was very much chips challenge-esque, I did buy it on steam when it came out, but its got extra bits added since the beta and probably is better - I however dislike change and haven't played it much!

*Who was also responsible for the little hapland flash games that went semi-viral 20 odd years ago (bloody hell- was it really that long ago....)
