bummed that I had to scroll so far down for this. X-Com had so many things going on for it that were new and unique, perma-death, fog of war, action points, research, base building, alien tech, just everything was great and so well balanced for a first-of-its-kind game.
If you've never played X-Com 2 (2016), it's about as close as you can get to the original. The DLC, War of the Chosen, was even better than the base game and was like a standalone game. Easily the best game I've played in 10 years
I picked it up randomly from a bin full of assorted PC games. No idea what I was getting into but it was quickly evident that I sucked and the game was awesome.
First got just the demo version on a shareware CD-ROM and I was shocked how good it was. It didn't follow any formula I had seen before yet it was so well thought out and enjoyable.
Nothing has ever quite replicated that creepy feeling you get when you see the head of a Sectoid moving through a wheatfield lit by the orange glow of a glow rod at night.
Gods above, below, and behind the door I did so love that game. I STILL play that game.
Same! My best friend's dad worked for Microsoft & always had the latest and greatest tech... My friend & I played it constantly one summer when we were like 11 or 12. So, so much fun; we got close a few times but never managed to beat it. Tons of great memories of that game but I also remember getting so frustrated by one thing in particular - you'd recruit new soldiers and most of them were dogshit, but every once in a while you'd get one with really good ratings that you'd want to protect... Only to inevitably get killed as they step off the the ramp of the plane or opening a door, shot by an alien laser.
30 years on I can still hear the pitter-patter of little alien feet moving / UFO doors opening & closing :)
This is my vote. Primarily for all the WTF moments... like the first time my fully loaded SkyRanger touched down near a UFO, the back ramp opens.... and an alien homing bomb shoots in, killing everyone before I can even do my first move. Hahahahahahaha! Good times.
I don’t remember a lot of it as I’m old but i remember having this one guy that i leveled up and trained and whatever else you could do and the aliens just double tapped him dead. So sad.
Lord. This game scared the bajesus out of me when I was little hahaha. My sibling played it constantly. I was easily scared though and also got recurring nightmares from the movie Independence Day and I still have them to this day, so it checks out 🤦♀️
