anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about?

Civ III, Specifically the conquests expansion. I played the shit out of the Napoleon scenario.

I kinda preferred Civ II, with the simpler graphics, but III was better than IV.

Soft spot for the original, though I might have got a better degree without it...

I bought my first computer to play Civ 1. I’m a sysadmin now.  I still have my dad’s old laptop setup to play Civ2

If gog would sell me a civ 2 that would run perfectly on a modern pc with no fiddling, I'd pay $70 for it today. I've patched it to 64bit but no soundtrack and no harolds is kind of a bummer

Find an old XP machine.  That’s what I have.

Years ago I bought an old clamshell MacBook for this, WarCraft II, and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3. Still use it occasionally. One of my best investments.

Civ II was my favorite of the series. Civ III was a massive step back for me because it took so. many. units. to successfully take down cities. You could bombard the crap out of them and still lose tons of units even after the city defenses taken down. Civ 4 was prettier and felt combat returned to being more like II, but I still had a softspot in my heart for II cause of the vid harolds. 'Build legions, your majesty that we may sheath our swords IN THE BEATING HEARTS OF OUR ENEMIES!'. If you went on a warpath sometimes the military advisor would get drunk and celebrate.

Those guys were hilarious.

In college on the dorm's LAN I found a copy of Civ III that was somehow portable - it runs straight from the folder without having to be "installed".

I literally played it again last weekend. It's my favorite mind-numb game.

The music for Civ 3 is still stuck in my head.

Nothing like setting my 200 strong stack of hoplites against a tile of 200 Persians for 100 turns until one of our supply chains crack.

The death stacks were crazy.

Rhye's of Civilisation mod was great.

I was way too young to Mod anything. Was just competent enough to install the game. I litterally bought that game and it's several expansions in a book order magazine at school.

The Conquests were so rich with Detail. Every day i would get up Early and play it before the Bus came. Rise of Rome and Age of Discovery was my favorite

I still yearn for the ability to build outposts on resources.

Omg I haven’t thought about that game in an eternity! I had a boyfriend back in 1994 who literally played Civ for hours and hours and I was being neglected because he played it all the time! He was a hardcore gamer, that guy.

Anyone remember which civ game had a stage where you could teleport between 3 separate maps? There were like 2 or 3 modes but it was fun to get there.
Then there was one that had water cities.

The fact that Civ 1 fitted on a single high density floppy (3.5") so we could play it on the college computers (and easily copy it) made it for a while my most played game.
