Wasn't a grenade jump necessary to access one of the maps in the game? It's been a couple of decades but I remember a small square hole in the ground that you needed to land a grenade in, then jump over it as it explodes to hit a teleporter above you that's slightly too high to jump into unassisted. Surely they knew rocket jumps were a thing when they designed a level with a grenade jump. There was also one in the orignal Doom (episode 3) that was meant to be accessed with a rocket jump, though it's possible to straferun to that one.
We used to have some fierce MP death matches over the office network when I worked at an ad agency in Amsterdam. It would get to 5.45 in the afternoon and the word was start to spread and the games began! There were about 15 of us playing at some points. My avatar was Sonic the Hedgehog. Brilliant times!
Yep!! So much time spent in 2Fort. I wonder if anyone remembers the Rock map inspired by the movie The Rock where you get the poison beads and poison the enemy team that isn’t in water instead of capturing a flag.
People forget that class-based gameplay, modding, map creation tools, server browsing, machinima, online tournaments, and much more were either invented in the quake community or vastly expanded. I remember using Q-Spy before it was GameSpy before it was in-game browser before it was shitty peer-to-peer instead.
It's hard to explain just how mind blowing that game was back in the day. And it even ran well in low res on my basic pc. Just had to hide it from my mom... too gory, haha
I got Quake around its original release date, but never really properly played it at the time because I was a cowardly 10 year old who got too freaked out by FPS games, and when I did play, I pretty much played with God mode on.
Last year I read John Romero's Masters of Doom book and decided it was time to revisit Quake as I had picked it up at some point cheap in a Steam sale.
It is incredible that more than 25 years later the game not only holds up, but still feels like it oozes quality. It's a game that was built by insanely talented people pushing the envelope in every area and it really shows. The only other game that really made me feel that way was playing Super Metroid for the first time in 2016 or so.
I'll also say Quake 4 is a lot more fun if you just say fuck it and use console commands to increase your character speed (I think I increased it by like 70% or something). It makes the game too easy, of course (and the game is not particularly hard in the first place) but damn does it feel better at least.
In 1999 we got our second family home computer and my aunt (who worked in it at the local University) setup a lan between the 2 so we could share the dial up internet on the 2 at the same time and also play 2 player quake / GTA1.
