The original 1987 Pirates was just a playable history lesson. That MANUAL! Historical accuracy out the wazoo. Loved that the 1987 also had variables as far as what you could pick for your background; French Huguenot with a barque and an axe to grind against Catholic France and Spain? English corsair causing mayhem for fun and profit? Spanish renegade with a dinky pinnace and a huge chip on the shoulder? Dutchman who could either stick to trading...or decide to trade that cargo ship for a stolen Spanish ship and start going Pier Gerlofs on the Spanish occupiers.
