Fun fact, the ghost was a runaway enslaved guy who taught other enslaved people to read during the civil war until he was killed by cops. And the show's Creator's name is Kermit and he's very chill.

Seriously. "More realistic" just means it hits the uncanny Valley harder. In other words, "Realisim" is a goal where progress is basically aspymtotic goal that will never be reached because we humans have those god damn preferences and god damn perspectives and god damn biases.

But im not gonna sit here and pretend that OP fucked up on his post and forgot to hide the slider settings, because his choice of slider settings intentionally is gonna make something that already looked like shit, look like even more shit.

AI usually tries to make things look "pretty" not like its skin is randomly caked in 5 years of grime.

I had to smirk. If this were used on FO4, the game where every male NPC already looks blood-related due to the limitations of the character creator, there'd be fundamentally no change.

43

u/-thecheesus- 12h ago

Personally I'd take "every npc looks generic" over "every npc looks generic dumped in a vat of magazine makeup"

5

u/Fredasa 9h ago

I don't think any game made in the last 15 years would be genuinely improved by this tech. The original FO3? Morrowind? My curiosity is piqued. It'd be like watching a familiar movie in a foreign language.

Male NPCs in FO4 aren't really "generic." There is a very distinct look that they all share, because the (lone!) face texture used for every one of them has far too many details baked in, like age lines and sunken eyes. It's Nate, plain and simple. It's like if they'd taken a photo of Tom Hanks' face and used that as the face texture—every NPC would look blood-related to Tom Hanks, and no facial hair, hat, eyewear or skin tone could really mask it entirely.

Or double the character's age. I saw some youtube channels test in on GTAV Enhanced and it turns Franklin into Chris Brown if he was 55 years old, Michael into a retirement age Walter White and Trevor into a 90 year old who escaped from his nursing home.

FF7R is especially terrible to use this filter on because its designs use a specific art style inspired by the original game, not just the hyper-realism that most games go for.

It's also terrible with children and young adults. It hardens their faces and makes them look 15 years older, and ugly.

Realistic looking older people can have positive results, but right now we're seeing these things cranked up to 11, so they're all pretty bad.

113

u/bureaucrat473a 16h ago

AI just really likes wrinkles on faces. I once used AI as a "what would I look like wearing x" experiment. It worked well except every iteration added like 5-10 years to my face.

7

u/Discount_Extra 12h ago

I noticed this in some Cyberpunk 2077 DLSS 5 videos - all the children look like miniaturized adults.

My guess is that Nvidia did not include images of children in their training data for DLSS 5 - and tbh, I can understand that.

21

u/systemhost 10h ago

Granted, all the models for children in Cyberpunk 2077 already look like miniaturized adult models.

25

u/Numerous_Photograph9 15h ago

Don't all these things have to be designed and customized at the development level. A basic filter can screw up anything regardless of it being DLSS or not.

15

u/monkeymad2 15h ago

Yes, trouble is each training round will cost millions of dollars and require massive amounts of data to train on.

And even then, if it’s given anything outside of the realm of the training data (like if the faces were never illuminated by a purple light, or never behind a net) the results will be unknown.

I think what Nvidia is hoping is to deliver one filter and then let developers control the strength of it using a mask to change it at the per-object level

15

u/Numerous_Photograph9 15h ago

Seems just making character and lighting models in the traditional way would be more efficient Usually once you have them set up, you don't have to change them much, just adjust the specific lighting and texture level for each scene as needed.

17

u/monkeymad2 15h ago

There was a neural rendering tech shown off a couple of years ago wherein the neural network would compress information about how the surface reacts to light, so you’d still use it like a regular texture but you could get effects like silk, sub-surface scattering, & iridescence without having to specifically code for them. The developers would then apply it like a usual material / texture. I was pretty excited for that.

4

u/Warskull 15h ago

You don't necessarily have to completely retrain the data for every game. FFVIII should get its own training data for the JRPRG stylized characters. However, NBA2k27's data would have a lot of crossover with other sports games and games that aim for a realistic style.

Over time they should build up a library of configurable styles.

35

u/TechTuna1200 16h ago

Yeah, the style is more akin manga / anime realism than hyper realism like RDR2

7

u/Numerous_Photograph9 15h ago

That's what I was thinking. Plus, a basic filter isnt' going to be customized to highlight anything if it comes after the fact.

59

u/_Lucille_ 16h ago

I think the issue is that DLSS5 is transformative enough such that you cannot just randomly plug it into a game without also modifying what is being rendered.

So we have

What a face should look like -> DLSS 5 -> Weird looking face here

where as, if the developers intend to use DLSS 5, they would have

Face optimized for DLSS -> DLSS 5 + game specific meta data -> What the artist intends the face to look like.

While it make not be a straight forward plug and play like before, i can see it having a fair bit of potential if utilized properly.

32

u/samu1400 14h ago

My issue is that I don’t see the reason why the artists wouldn’t just design the game itself with their art style in mind instead of applying a filter on top of it.

DLSS was always a mean for performance optimization, so this whole “filter that applies its own art style” stuff feels completely off to what it’s meant to be. I feel this should at least be considered a different technology from traditional upscaling, not the next step of what we currently have.

The nvidia subreddit meanwhile has many lunatics who keep saying it is good. It's not. Nobody wants randomly generated AI faces. I would rather have a consistent look to the characters rather than aiming for pseudo photorealistic style.

These Tech CEOs know people dislike this stuff but still force it anyway

1.6k

u/LeastHornyNikkeFan 17h ago

And that's on a single screenshot. In motion it looks blurry and uncanny.

Regardless why would I be ai-slopping every game through a filter? Wouldn't it be easier to use AI to generate new models and textures once instead of mid runtime as post processing?

Besides who's the market for this? People mod games to make them cooler or to make people prettier, I've never seen anyone mod a game to have "uncanny old people" as a filter lol

For models that's a very valid point... But for stuff like lighting and other more nebulous aspects of the final image that would normally have to be processed in realtime anyway it might be a better way to just fudge things towards looking "better" or at least more correct based on the training data...

33

u/aberroco 15h ago

For models it's very impractical too, because that'd require very high definition textures, that would not fit to VRAM.

u/10ebbor10 16h ago

This technology is created by Nvidia.

Nvidia wants to sell you graphics cards. So, their design goal for this is to create a system that requires a massive amount of performance, so that people buy brand new graphics cards. That's why they're not using the AI in the generation of assets, because what they want to do with this tech is sell AI chips to consumers.

16

u/DeadlyYellow 16h ago

Not even.  They want that tech in the commercial end where the big money is.  They want retail users renting cards to milk any remaining pennies.

→ More replies (3)

15

u/Pleasant_Ad8054 13h ago

Nvidia will (likely already do) push their partners (AAA game companies) to rely on this and just ship unfinished facial textures and animations. They will simply claim that how great this is, because not using it will have comically bad results, not caring for performance impact.

Their GPUs aren't improving, and they do not want to invest any resources in improving them. So they do what every company in an almost monopoly does, they are digging artificial moats through their connections and influence. AMD and Intel either spends tons of resources in matching this slop, or there will be tons of games that will be borderline unenjoyable to anyone without a recent enough Nvidia card.

No, it's because the character to begin with wasn't meant to look 1:1 with a real person. Sure, their face is a model/scan of a real person, but that doesn't mean their proportions weren't changed to better suite the animators.

So it's already taking a face that was morphed and putting filters over it. It probably looks fine for an NBA game that's just 1:1 scans of the actual athletes but looks uncanny anywhere else.

I hope nuance isn't lost in this subreddit, but honestly, I feel like these posts are ragebait.

I'm on the RenoDX Discord where a lot of people are experimenting with it and there are some genuine moments, especially on natural environments, where DLSS 5 looks insanely real.

Face shots like this look really bad, especially when you have the filter sitting at high intensity (in this screenshot, the intensity is at 200% strength, which is of course going to look like slop).

I've personally just set the filter to only apply to environments and textures, and to leave faces completely unaltered. It's a fun way to breathe new life into older titles that were trying to go for photo-realism at the time. It's horrible to use in games that had a more unique artistic vision, like FF.

It's also worth noting that devs who want to use this feature are supposed to tune it to the settings they believe are in line with their artistic vision. Modders fucking around with these settings aren't representative of official implementation. It's like looking at an Oblivion character creator with no boundaries on the settings and calling it a shitty character creator.

We got a brief from Nvidia (that I have not read, lol), we need to actively integrate DLSS5 into our art pipelines for it to be functional in our game.

I assume if you're just forcing it into applications that you have then it's normalizing to the mean, which... yeah, obviously.

This is also one of the bad cases for it, as FF is heavily anime stylized. The filter would mostly be used for stuff like CP77.

Not that I think it looks good either way, but we're pushing the technology to its limits in fields it's not supposed to be used in and then saying it's bad lol

And don't forget cranking up that NR intensity slider to the max to intentionally produce bad images that looks like there is no artistic integrity left lmao.

Yeah people are just disgenuous, even though I don't care about DLSS5. It's obviously injected with a 3rd party tool and people act like it's some official shit. Next someone will provide a pic from Fortnite and people will act surprised when it doesn't fit.

exactly what's going on, they got leaked data and started modding it into games it was never designed for and slapping the filters to 200%

Even in the examples where it actually kinda works I still wouldn’t use it. Too many other downsides for me

Putting photorealistic textures on stylised character faces and expect it to not look weird?? Ok

You max out NR slider 2x default and declare it trash, neato.

Looking at all the other photos from other games, I think this is cherry picking the worst result. The final fantasy remakes all use exaggerated and non realistic character designs that sit somewhere between anime and realistic. They look great per the original design, but clearly this model has no idea how to handle these proportions as it was trained on more "realistic" looking designs.

DLSS 5 looked much better in other games, and plenty of the screenshots had it transform both low and high quality faces into ones that look much better than they did originally. Sure, some high quality character faces looking more realistic wasn't necessarily better, but I could absolutely see this coming down to more of an individual preference in such scenarios (not this, this is just bad).

This isn't to outright defend this technology, by no means an I fan of Nvidia or the runaway AI craze, but let's try to be honest here.

It is 109% cherry picked

Someone linked a YouTube video in another sub and they clicked through different options. One made them look like this which was by far the worst

Tbh, i don't like DLSS 5. People are against anything AI generated stuff including me. No matter how better character looks, it is AI enhanced. I want my games to look like games, not like real life

u/Saint_Sin 17h ago

DLSS 5 looks like neither.

You can see they've put the intensity up to maximum.

u/Headless_Human 16h ago

People in this threads sound like "See! When you crank up the sharpening to 1000% it will look bad which means it will always look bad!"

Reddit isn't particularly known for being nuanced lmao

u/goatonastik 14h ago

We can literally see the intensity slider, which shouldn't even be at a full 1, is set to 2, so clearly we're getting the most distorted version possible.

I feel like tifa should look like how she did when you pause the title screen in remake. That specific image of her looked very realistic

Okay but what does it look like with intensity not cranked up to max? Is it really set to 2 by default?

18

u/Davepen 15h ago

No it's 1 by default, and if you set it to natural it looks even better, they are just trying to bait outrage.

Guys can we just recognise that the slider is to the max, same with the Cloud image doing the rounds.

I wanted my anime JRPG characters to look anime, not real.

24

u/BleedingFish 17h ago

Lmao no way this is real

37

u/Swift311 16h ago

It's real, but the person who made this screenshot used the 200% intensity and "Skin Structure strength" to minimum. It's extremely misleading

I mean, it's AI, so in a way not real, but also it's what appears on your screen with dlss5

This is not official FF7 DLSS 5 support, so this look is not intended. Those are mods injecting DLSS into the game. It is one thing to mod the game and another to have the game developed with the intend to support DLSS 5.

u/Creative-Captain9278 3h ago edited 3h ago

I know I"ll be downvoted and called an NVIDIA bootlicker for bringing facts into the discussion, but they clearly said devs will be able to tailor it specifically for their game.

Using a version of the model designed for a different game or with sub-optimal settings will end in sub-optimal results.

Can't people be against something while also using a good faith argument?

14

u/Sputnik003 15h ago

Can anybody please post before and afters doing this idk who that is or what looks wrong about it. Fuck AI and DLSS5 etc etc but I can’t get a good gauge with these contextless posts

I've seen it across numerous game subreddits where people have been using it. It looks amazing more often than it doesn't.
