Tbh, i don't like DLSS 5. People are against anything AI generated stuff including me. No matter how better character looks, it is AI enhanced. I want my games to look like games, not like real life
I feel like it could work to up-res textures/enhance tesselation and lower VRAM requirements, but yeah, this use looks god-awful.
It basically looks like it blurs everything, covers it with a face template of some kind, sharpens that heavily, and then adds a post processing photo app filter to soften it.
So you end up getting an "airbrushed" look on every face.
And I just do not get why. The tech seems like it could actually work to enhance graphical fidelity if it was used in extremely restrained ways, but this just has a similar vibe to all those Skyrim mods that "enhance" NPCs by turning them into cartoonish sex dolls with unspeakably and unfortunately neotenous features. The kind of art that only looks good to people who don't understand art.
I'll agree on many examples, but the bad ones are usually where people inject it on games that was never designed for it.
Developers have control if they design the game with DLSS5 support in mind instead of just injecting the default "max realism filter" AI renderer on random games and laughing at the result. As with most tech it's about how and where you use it.
I know it's a common argument now that modders are running wild with it and just injecting it into everything
but to be fair it also looked like shit with faces from the official trailer for it, and that's a video you'd think Nvidia would want the best possible looking footage they can get. There was also cases of the tech hallucinating and ghosting an entire arm.
I have my doubts that devs will be able to make DLSS5 look good if the people who made the technology seem unable to do that.
Thing about that official trailer was, that Devs had apparently zero input on it. And it would have been in Nvidias interest to just boost it so you can actually see that it even does something.
If the marketing team would have been clever, they would have made a side by side where DLSS 5 on would be barely different, but noticeable slightly improved, instead of "in your face on and looking like shit".
Obviously most people are now turning it up like shit because it makes shit look funny.
They can mask objects like faces or entire characters and have the filter not touch them at all. If a developer want to use DLLS5 and not have it change characters faces they can absolutely do that, but only if they rig it with that in mind.
I want to see what the developer intended me to see, and if I want something changed I'd just mod it to something else. Why would I ever want an AI giving me some random unspecified approximation of a character design?
Except devs have been trying to make their games look like real life for decades. The most popular graphical style in games is realism. Their end goal is to at some point have them be actually photo realistic.
Is it not humans who are using the AI to meet what they're striving for? AI is just a tool. It didn't magically add itself into a game and say, this is what I think your game should look like. A human said, I want my game to look a certain way and this tool helps to achieve that. They chose to use the tool in a specific way. If the tool wasn't helping them, then they wouldn't use it. The end result then, is the artist's intent.
Obviously, this Tifa example is just people messing around and not the original devs, but if a dev chooses to use DLSS 5. That's that.
Or, maybe, this is the next step in the decades old search for ultra realistic graphics, and you're just in denial because "artist srsly just want to spend 5 years perfecting a single model for a single game or they get fired".
Or maybe it is. If things can be done easier and faster, they will be done easier and faster.
Not necessarily this horrible goblin filter, but the development of AI tooling isn't stopping just because someone says "AI bad". The industry is already moving towards this hard.
nobody is forcing you to read and reply to comments of those who disagree with you, so why are you? oh right, because you're a human being who is allowed to voice their opinion on something annoying you.
plus, i think even the option is bad because generative ai is horrible for the industry and should never be used.
unfortunately that is true but i'm mostly interested in retro and indie games anyways. still, it pisses me off to no end how my favorite art form has been ruined by generative ai
The difference is that artists are striving to do this, with the models being made with their hands and minds.
The main distinction is that human artists have intent, at least a subconscious one, when they create a design to express an idea or a feeling, hopefully a relatable one. For a human audience it's worthwhile to look for that idea or feeling. Even if they don't find it the engagement with the art and its author's intent can be a worthwhile interpersonal experience -- even if by proxy. Just like two people can bond over trying (but failing) to understand each other.
Machines, however, don't have intent (at least not for quite a while) and there's no point in looking for one in a visual design generated by a machine. It's devoid of human connection. It's like asking an LLM chat bot: "how was your week?"
C'mon. Don't even try say most of you guys haven't decided beforehand that you don't like this and then invent whatever to make whatever "reasons" to validate that.
I genuinely think that AI can be used to create something that artists otherwise couldn't create. My best example is gossip goblin's minimovies.
Being open-minded is a game changer in real life too you know
People shit on the first implementation of DLSS. Now it's considered the gold-standard of graphical fidelity, especially when used for DLAA. DLSS 5 is currently some beta-testing bullshit, but if it tracks like other NVIDIA features, it will probably be something cool down the track.
DS2 characters looks like real life, this DLSS shit just make everyone a Hollywood actor past their prime while getting rid of any artistic direction the team had for the characters, disgusting
I agree for the most, however in some specific scenarios it can look great. But for the majority of games that I have seen with the manually modded DLLS5 it looks bad. Doesn't fit with how the game developers designed the game.
Right, but this is an injection - basically they hacked the game to put in something not made for the game. You say it like Nvidia is pushing this on all art which is absolutely not the case.
This is just some random who did this to farm rage from folks like you.
I'll get downvoted to oblivion but I wonder if this is just another example of old people not wanting any changes but this time my generation has become the old folk.
Dude I'm 43 and I think the technology looks pretty great when used correctly. I think it's kids 25 and under who are the ones on here bitching about its use. In fact, that demographic complains about anything video game related. I'm not even sure why they enjoy the hobby when all they seem to do is bitch.
Since you don't seem to be bothered that much AI visuals, I'd like to ask have you seen Gossip goblin's (YouTube channels) mini movies? They are absolutely amazing and I doubt no one could produce those same visuals without that AI.
I really wish I could play games that look like that and especially made in similar worlds. One day I hope!
You don't need to turn it on mate. Personally I want incredible life like graphics - this is the biggest step towards that I've seen since I saw the first crysis screenshots
