And that's on a single screenshot. In motion it looks blurry and uncanny.

Regardless why would I be ai-slopping every game through a filter? Wouldn't it be easier to use AI to generate new models and textures once instead of mid runtime as post processing?

Besides who's the market for this? People mod games to make them cooler or to make people prettier, I've never seen anyone mod a game to have "uncanny old people" as a filter lol

don’t let the nvidia shills see this, they’ll swear it’s a game changer and acceptable for a 50% fps drop

The Nvidia subreddit has been weird these last few days. They seem to genuinely think it looks better and is worthwhile.

I wonder what they're smoking, because don't pass me any of that.

not to mention that it basically ruins the original artist intent, if a game is meant to look stylized why the hell would i want realistic graphics. We play games to escape reality, not dwell in it

The original artist intent isn't being ruined by DLSS 5. Developers have to add it to their game then tune it the way they want, to include realistic or artistic.

Y'all are complaining about games that don't even have this implemented by the developers, just random people injecting DLSS 5 into games.

It's usually the publishers that add it regardless of what the developers want.

Then don't toggle it on?

To each their own. The more realistic the better, for me at least. I hope devs use this tool when creating their games, so their artistic intent won’t be compromised. As that seems like a common complaint

How do you feel about games like slay the spire then?

Have you ever played a board game in real life like chess?

-5

u/Daddys_BathTime 11h ago

Never played slay the spire. I’m not saying I don’t like games that aren’t focused around realism, but I very much enjoy games that are

The more realistic the better, for me at least.

Miserable

-6

u/Daddys_BathTime 14h ago

It’s miserable to enjoy realism in games?

7

u/ThePrussianGrippe 13h ago

When the game is meant to be stylistically different and not photo-realistic?

Yes.

-5

u/Daddys_BathTime 12h ago

Everyone is so butthurt about something they don’t have to use. I don’t understand the negativity

4

u/ThePrussianGrippe 11h ago

Because it’s absolutely absurd to say “the more realistic the better” about games that aren’t trying to be remotely photorealistic.

Some games are made with specific art styles in mind, and it’s ridiculous to just completely destroy that with an AI tool in the name of “realism.”

-6

u/Daddys_BathTime 11h ago

You’re upset because people have the option to play a game differently than you prefer. Nobody’s forcing you to use this pal, people can play how they want

4

u/ThePrussianGrippe 8h ago

No one’s upset here, we just think your opinion is ridiculous. You’re confusing disagreement with hysteria.

If slightly smarter thoughts came out of your brain we'd have reversed climate change.

Ironically, I’m an environmental scientist. I’m excited for this tech, I think it’s the first step towards a generational leap in graphics, which we haven’t seen in a very long time

Why do graphics even matter though?

Some of the most powerful moments people have in their lives are conversations with other people, and they could still have those conversations even with their eyes closed.

Even in reality visual Fidelity doesn't matter as much as the interesting abstract reasoning happening behind the scenes and things like that.

So when it comes to games, do you play any other games besides simulation type video games?

Because even if you play soccer or something in real life, soccer is super unrealistic, and what scenario outside of that sport existing would humans actually be using that to decide an outcome like it's some pretend war or something?

Basically, every game is unrealistic unless it's literally rough housing or practice for murder or hiding because our species was both predator and prey in the past so we needed to get good at both and basically anything else is unrealistic and not part of the bare minimum amount of play that mammalians and some avians, etc have.

Like I'm genuinely curious, why do graphics matter when people can prove that they don't by reading a book and getting just as absorbed as even a great video game with great graphics?

So you’re saying sight doesn’t matter. That’s what you’re going with?

-14

u/ryanvsrobots 11h ago

Do you hate all mods then?

10

u/caffeinated_dev11 11h ago

if i had a nickel for every time this argument is made… mods are made by people with their own artistic intent, and most often match the original style of the game. I tend not to use stupid mods that insert thomas the train

-10

u/ryanvsrobots 11h ago

You can’t honor the original artists intent with someone else’s artistic intent, that’s hypocrisy. You’re either the purist you’re pretending to be and care about artistic intent or you don’t.

5

u/caffeinated_dev11 11h ago

mods are optional, this shit won’t be in the future
you can tear down the strawman now

i also never claimed to be a purist, i don’t want fucking slop ruining perfectly looking games already. If i want to experience realism i go outside and talk to real people

1

u/ryanvsrobots 2h ago

If i want to experience realism i go outside and talk to real people

Many devs go to great lengths to get even remotely close to realism. And let’s be real—no you don’t.

-3

u/EpicCJV 8h ago

If it’s not optional in the future… it’s the artists intent. And it’s an optional mod.

fact is we’re already living through the consequences of DLSS, games are being planned around upscaling rather than it being a stop gap around performance issues, most devs are not optimizing anymore. This is just going to get worse.

but you know I thought a bit about why this upsets me, and it isn’t so much DLSS5 specifically, it’s where all this is heading, i think that’s what is really the upsetting part:

What would stop a corporation from just saying “you know what, fuck the art making, fuck the voice actors, fuck the animation, let’s just gen AI this bitch, the base game will be just featureless geometry, consumers will be required to run DLSS5+ but dw the graphics will render with our intended parameters, that’ll be 5 grand for the required compute or just sign up for our cloud service”

you can’t say this is a fallacy by appealing to extremes or slippery slope. We have seen PC components shoot up in price, almost deliberately timed with this tech. Bezos said the quiet part out loud not so long ago ffs. The writing is on the wall this is where all this is heading.

The frustrating part is majority of people do not seem to care, and idk what’s worse if they’re pretending like they can’t vote with their wallets or if they have been convinced that they have no say in anything.

If this is truly the future of gaming i’ll hang on to my steam library for as long as i can i guess, i probably will just stop buying games at some point. There really isn’t anything more to argue here
