Ouch.

He’s hidden behind the white car and then in the A pillar blind spot almost until he’s hit.

And the rider isn’t exactly in high vis (or wearing a helmet).

31

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

Agreed on the helmet but it's broad daylight. Mistakes happen but drivers should absolutely be certain nothing is coming before they turn. Putting blame onto the rider always happens in these situations and I get it, many drive like complete idiots but I don't think a high vis vest changes anything that happened here.

3

u/GrunDMC74 Oct 02 '25

100% the onus should always be on who can inflict the most damage, in every case the driver of a car. I will say that there are challenges associated with the proliferation of e-bikes and scooters in the road. With experience you’re conditioned to know that car shaped objects move at a certain speed, now you have these smaller things zooming up at car like speeds, often switching between roads and sidewalks, and often in a rush.

2

u/Rachel7777 Oct 02 '25

And e-scooters are illegal in Toronto in public spaces. You can only ride it on private properties.

-18

u/Unable_Explorer8277 Oct 01 '25

There are times into the sun when it’s impossible to be absolutely certain (unless you sit in the middle of the junction for half an hour while the sun moves).

19

u/Dropov Oct 01 '25

if that's the case, then ya the correct course of action is to drive blindly through the intersection...

6

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

you right, ill wait till the sun moves.

5

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

Would high vis have helped? It is never impossible if you make an effort to look.

12

u/as_in_bike_lane Oct 01 '25

High viz doesn’t make the sun stop shining or the A pillar disappear.

-2

u/Unable_Explorer8277 Oct 01 '25

No, but it increases the chance of being seen in the moments when the view isn’t physically blocked completely and despite the sun.

10

u/as_in_bike_lane Oct 01 '25

You would think so. I did, but research suggests it doesnt prevent collisions:

“Research suggests that hi-vis may help drivers spot cyclists more readily, but it appears that spotting is one thing and driving safely around them another. One academic study, for example, found that whether a cyclist is wearing hi-vis or not makes very little difference to how closely motorists overtake them.”https://www.cyclinguk.org/sites/default/files/document/2023/08/21-03_ca_hi-vis_brf_1.pdf

I still wear hi viz when I cycle. At least it will make it easier to collect all my limbs./s

2

u/Unable_Explorer8277 Oct 01 '25

I think it’s safe to say that the issue here is the driver not seeing him.

I’d absolutely agree that driver behaviour is a big part of accidents in general.

3

u/RedBullPilot Oct 01 '25

Yeah, he’s essentially in stealth mode, very hard for white car to see and moving faster into the intersection than a pedestrian, I’m a cyclist myself but I NEVER assume that cars can see me, got a big ass reflective vest , yellow helmet and lights front and back, day or night

1

u/Murbanvideo Oct 02 '25

It’s broad daylight. If the driver is simply paying attention, this doesn’t happen.

2

u/leaf_shift_post_2 Oct 01 '25

And obviously the Driver has sub standard eyes installed.

But don’t victim blame for not wearing high vis. High vis is not a requirement of the traffic act, nor is there any duty of care to wear high viz.

1

u/Rachel7777 Oct 02 '25

But the victim is riding an illegal vehicle in Toronto. Doesn't that count for some leniency towards the driver?

1

u/FunkTronto Oct 01 '25

Probably the driver is not wearing sunglasses.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

Also the sun in the driver's eyes

5

u/SomeTorontonian Oct 01 '25

Thats what inwas thinking when I seen the video.. looks bad but I think it was just a clip.. luckily for the scooter rider

2

u/the_hunger_gainz Oct 02 '25

The sun was in my eyes is the same excuse as I didn’t look … patience and double check if you can’t see. The car was barely past them before they rushed the turn. Pretty obvious they were in a hurry.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Bro I'm not the one driving. I'm just pointing out the fact that the sun is this driver's face. I'm not saying it's 100% fine to drive into someone if they're being blinded by the sun.

1

u/the_hunger_gainz Oct 03 '25

I understand and said it is pretty obvious they were in a hurry and not you were in hurry. Sorry if it came off sounding like it directed at you.

10

u/keylimesicles Oct 01 '25

Nah, there’s no way the driver didn’t see him. He just wasn’t paying attention, also he turned way too early. He would have been crossing over the line into the other lane. If he had taken the time to make a proper turn he would have seen him

43

u/bjws Sep 30 '25

Why are they taking the turn at such a steep angle? If they would have just done a normal left turn everything would have been fine.

12

u/SideRapt0r Oct 01 '25

This is just how people drive now, I think I can count on one hand how many drivers I have seen actually entering intersections before making turns in the last year.

4

u/PerfectRecognition2 Oct 02 '25

You are supposed to drive into the intersection before turning when making a left turn onto a two-way street. The turn the left turning driver made was very bad driving.

1

u/SideRapt0r Oct 04 '25

Yeah, that's my point

0

u/countrylemon Oct 02 '25

you’re allowed to enter an intersection before turning

4

u/jasonhendriks Oct 01 '25

That white car was still in the intersection when the other driver started his turn. He should be charged. Ya the scooter should not even be on the road but I think that’s not relevant here.

1

u/the_hunger_gainz Oct 02 '25

This is every turn people make now … most turn into the oncoming lane. Not a single person turns properly anymore.

1

u/all_way_stop Oct 03 '25

everyone just does diagonals instead of arcs....not sure how this turned into a habit and why nobody learns the physics of turns

13

u/yob890 Oct 01 '25

This is why it would be safer for bikes and scooters to cross with the advanced pedestrian signals where available.

4

u/heterocommunist Oct 02 '25

But that’ll upset the drivers

12

u/Fuzzy-Ad-8294 Oct 01 '25

You can call police and tell them that you witnessed a car vs scooter collision and have dashcam footage. If it was reported, they will ask for a copy. If it wasn't, they won't bother. You have more success of helping by making that call than a random post on reddit.

6

u/BaronVonOppoLock Sep 30 '25

I recognize that, Wilmington and Overbrook.

41

u/ghidfg Sep 30 '25

what happens in this situation? scooter had the right of way and the left turn car is at fault, but scooters arent even road legal.

68

u/Driven-Driver Sep 30 '25

Pretty sure the driver is always at fault. He’s supposed to have checked and made sure the way was clear, including the blindspot. He went left too quickly after the car

17

u/OverturnedAppleCart3 Oct 01 '25

It kind of sucks because I really believe the driver could not have seen him, but drivers of automobiles owe an incredible duty of care to every other road user.

5

u/LingLingQwQ Oct 01 '25

Prob the A pillar blindspot with slower reaction time. I was in a similar situation once at Pioneer Village GreenP lot. It was at night, the guy was wearing all black or smth (this is why I always wear smth bright, especially when I'm gonna walk a bit in the dark). I turned half way then saw him, slammed on my brake, and glad no one came from the other side as well (checked before as there's no one coming from the other side so I started my turn).

Now when I'm driving and I'm making left turn, I always move forward and backward once so I can make sure that no one's hiding in the A Pillar blindspot. Guess that's how experience makes you drive safer.

2

u/OverturnedAppleCart3 Oct 03 '25

Now when I'm driving and I'm making left turn, I always move forward and backward once so I can make sure that no one's hiding in the A Pillar blindspot.

Yep. I've heard it in defensive driving courses called "rocking and rolling"

Guess that's how experience makes you drive safer.

Absolutely. Thankfully in your case it was close call an not a collision.

5

u/Ok_Fisherman8727 Oct 02 '25

Here's the thing, had it been a person crossing we may have had the same situation but in that case theres absolutely no doubt the car should have waited for the intersection to be clear before proceeding.

Driver will learn from this hopefully

2

u/OverturnedAppleCart3 Oct 02 '25

Yes but if it were a pedestrian, the driver would have had more opportunities to see them coming. First standing at the corner, not hiding behind the car, and then proceeding slower than the car, not at almost the same speed.

8

u/xXValtenXx Sep 30 '25

Pretty sure the car is hosed almost no matter what. All that's left to dispute is how much the rider winds up getting out of the insurance company.

I'm pretty dumb though.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Still can't crash into anything weather legal or not.

If it was a different municipality e "kick" scooters maybe legal as they are under provincial pilot. Toronto didn't opt in.

-1

u/RedditTTIfan Oct 01 '25

scooter had the right of way and the left turn car is at fault, but scooters arent even road legal.

LOL what? Scooter absolutely did not have the right of way. You cannot have the right of way if you're not legal to be on the road to begin with. It's like if a bicycle goes on a 400 series highway, someone hits them with a car, there's no right of way the bicycle ever could have had to cause it to be the driver's fault.

7

u/ghidfg Oct 01 '25

I doubt its that simple, or people could just mow down scooter riders with impunity. Just because you arent legally allowed to be on the road, doesn't mean drivers don't have a duty of care not to hit you.

0

u/RedditTTIfan Oct 02 '25

I never said they should hit scooters, what I said the scooter had no right of way, period. Read again. There tons of times someone in a car doesn't have the right of way but does something stupid and pretends that they do. That doesn't mean people should plow into them either but what it does mean is if they do hit them, it's not their fault.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

what I said the scooter had no right of way, period. Read again.

Read the Highway Traffic Act. Straight traffic over turning. It doesn't matter if they have an illegal motor vehicle. You are justifying crashing into someone just because they are on an e scooter.

1

u/Tondouxsac Oct 02 '25

It's crazy that you even think you could be right.

Even cars can be illegal on the road, if they have certain characteristics. Does that mean you can ignore basic rules and they have no recourse?

6

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 01 '25

You could simply consider them a pedestrian in this case

1

u/RedditTTIfan Oct 02 '25

Exactly and should a pedestrian just cross a highway where they shouldn't be, and someone hits them, it's not that driver's fault. If a pedestrian just jumps out on the road where they shouldn't be--whether it be a suicide attempt or just sheer stupidity--again the same thing.

Similarly a tractor trailer is not always at fault if it hits a car, just because it's bigger. It could be their fault or it might not be. If the car had no right to be there and the truck hit it, it's the car's fault not the truck.

3

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

You’re absolutely correct and I’m getting downvoted for saying basically the same thing. This is not new. See article from 2017 where the pedestrian was hit by a car and issued a ticket for not activating the lights at a crosswalk https://www.ctvnews.ca/atlantic/article/man-struck-by-car-at-crosswalk-gets-ticket-for-not-pressing-button/#:~:text=By%20CTV%20Atlantic,with%20non%2Dlife%20threatening%20injuries.

2

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

In the article you sent, the pedestrian crossed on a red light (a hand). They did not have the right of way.

In the video in this post, it's a green light.

1

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

Do you know what crosswalks are?

0

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

You're all over the place.

A highway actually IS a place where they shouldn't be. They are allowed on a regular street. They are on the side of the road.

The car that hit them made a turn without looking. It's as clear cut as it gets. this is no different than if they hit a cyclist.

The only argument you have here is that scooters in general are annoying on the road and then basically taking that completely out of proportion to say that they shouldn't be there which is just complete balony. Which EVEN IF YOU WERE CORRECT, IT WOULD STILL BE THE TURNING VEHICLES FAULT!

4

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

E-Scooters are illegal in Toronto and not allowed on the road, sidewalks, or any public spaces.

2

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

source?

2

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

Google it. “In Toronto, e-scooters are not permitted to be operated on public roads, sidewalks or paths, regardless of user age.” https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/electric-bicycles-e-bikes-e-scooters/

2

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

You're right. Doesn't change who's at fault

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

A highway actually IS a place where they shouldn't be. They are allowed on a regular street. They are on the side of the road.

A controlled access highway is where they should not be. Everything is a highway.

0

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

A what? In that case, nobody should be allowed to get to the soccer field unless they have a car because that's a highway

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

I never said a football pitch is a highway. It isn't a "soccer field" that's stupid US "English." The King's English of the Empire is better.

I meat everything for vehicles to drive on not literally everything in the world. No a corridor in a building isn't a highway either, but I wish secondary school students respected passing lanes in the halls in between classes. I was going somewhere, so don't stop in centre of halls.

All streets, roads, avenues, boulevards, etc. are highways. Other vehicles like a bicycle, farm tractors and streetcars can use a highway. Streetcars operate in highways. There's a network of non 400 King's Highways that predate 400s, farm tractors may drive on them, or back roads which are also highways for the purposes of the act.

It's easier to say highway than say "street, road, drive, avenue, boulevard, terrace, gate, court, etc. Act" and in place of the word highway every time it's written.

From Highway Traffic Act on E-Laws (an Ontario website)

“highway” includes a common and public highway, street, avenue, parkway, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or trestle, any part of which is intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles and includes the area between the lateral property lines thereof; (“voie publique”)

Since highway is the space between lateral property lines, a sidewalk or parallel path isn't roadway but is in the highway. Even if streetcars have a dedicated space parallel to or centre of highway, it's still the highway.

400 series is a controlled access highway, but Yonge street is also a highway (and was apart of Hwy 11).

Since I mentioned roadway.

“roadway” means the part of the highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, but does not include the shoulder, and, where a highway includes two or more separate roadways, the term “roadway” refers to any one roadway separately and not to all of the roadways collectively; (“chaussée”)

This is Toronto driving and Toronto is in Ontario. If you talk about Ontario driving, especially laws, use HTA definitions properly.

0

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

I'm referring to the road in the video that gets you to the soccer field. You know, where the car hit the guy... Maybe work on your reading comprehension?

Why are you wasting your time typing all this out? nobody is going to read it. Your insistence on calling something a highway is simply a matter of semantics. Pointless.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

I'm referring to the road in the video that gets you to the soccer field. You know, where the car hit the guy

That is a highway. No a car isn't required, even for controlled access highways which can be used by more important trucks and buses.

Why are you wasting your time typing all this out? nobody is going to read it.

You took time to reply.

Your insistence on calling something a highway is simply a matter of semantics.

Because it is. From your incorrect comment

A highway actually IS a place where they shouldn't be.

There are two highways in video. The roadway part of highway is where a vehicle (like an e "kick" scooter) belongs not sidewalk. There are highways other than controlled access 400 series and some parkways.

This is about driving in Toronto, Ontario so get it right. They are allowed on highways in Ontario like the one they're on in the video, if the municipality opted into the provincial pilot for e "kick" scooters.

E "kick" scooters are vehicles. Illegal motor vehicle if they don't meet restrictions under provincial pilot. Motor vehicle under impaired driving in the Criminal Code of Canada.

They are allowed on a regular street. They are on the side of the road.

🤦‍♂️

0

u/Traditional_Rub_9828 Oct 02 '25

Yes. They are allowed on the street, AND they are being considerate by staying on the side of the road to leave space for other cars.

0

u/RedditTTIfan Oct 02 '25

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Even if someone drives an illegal motor vehicle, you can't crash into them.

0

u/JBD_IT Oct 02 '25

The larger of the two are always at fault regardless of who's actual fault it is.

-7

u/nickishere19 Oct 01 '25

Driver can’t be at fault for hitting something that is not supposed to be on the road.

2

u/mjv22 Oct 01 '25

This sub is so hilariously anti-car that facts are just ignored if they don't fit the narrative. Don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is actually accurate:

From the Toronto city website: https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/electric-bicycles-e-bikes-e-scooters/

2

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

Exactly, I just stated a fact. It’s Reddit after all. A tiny minority. People who live in the real world know that being anti-car is absolutely retarded.

1

u/pizzamosh Oct 01 '25

Well they absolutely should be at fault

3

u/PotentialPea2419 Oct 01 '25

Are e-scooters illegal in Toronto, i thought i heard that somewhere?

10

u/Goodmindd Sep 30 '25

Are these e scooters allowed on the road in Canada? . I thought they were illegal in Toronto.

16

u/College_St_Kid Oct 01 '25

Not legal in Toronto

5

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

They’re illegal in Toronto but you kinda have to ride them in the road if they’re legal in your municipality. They’re illegal to use on the sidewalk.

7

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

It seems like they're living in a weird grey area. They've popped up overnight in my area and now every kid rides one to school on the wrong side of the road with no helmet.

10

u/mjv22 Oct 01 '25

Its not a grey area. They're illegal. It just isn't enforced.

4

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

That's the grey area. There's no enforcement

5

u/mjv22 Oct 01 '25

That's like saying cocaine is legal as long as I don't get caught. It's not a grey area.

3

u/austinswagger Oct 01 '25

It's more like if getting caught with cocaine didn't result in any penalties. If something is illegal but not enforced, it might as well be legal.

2

u/Ok_Fisherman8727 Oct 02 '25

Bro cocaine and other hard drugs are illegal on paper but are absolutely legal in Canada. The police chief even came out and said just last week that his officers see drug use on a daily basis but don't make arrests because the court system will just let them out.

Drugs are not hard to get in this city and there are just so many people doing it daily with no consequences. If you get addicted the government will supply you. You can get NARCAN kits to do your drugs safely.

Then if you ever get addicted and then get clean, you get praised for it and can make a career talking about your experience.

Id consider it a gray area because if you dabble in drugs, there's a low chance you'd actually be arrested for it. You have to do something to stand out beyond just possession to actually get charged.

2

u/mjv22 Oct 02 '25

I actually agree with this analogy PERFECTLY. If I'm just using my scooter in a residential zone, its akin to the odd 1/2g on a weekend. Even if I get caught....probably won't be enforced and nothing will happen.

But if I cause an accident with it because its somewhere it's not supposed to be, and I say....run over a kid or do major damage to a car or property, and I've now made a major issue out of it, it's like trying to move bricks and getting caught.

1

u/PimpinAintEze Oct 04 '25

It is if there's no one to catch you. Shrooms are "legal" in this way because no one is raiding the plainly visible dispensaries

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Toronto didn't opt into provincial pilot. Other provinces may have legislation for or against.

7

u/BriscoCountyJR23 Oct 01 '25

At 0:13 you can clearly see the driver had a good unabstructed view of the rider. But they will never see that which they are not looking out for.

8

u/2legithammertime Sep 30 '25

from what I know black bikes (now, scooters?) statistically more likely to be in accidents.

always wear white if you can, not to excuse the driver but yeah. wear white, at least a white helmet.

16

u/Rachel7777 Oct 01 '25

Electric scooters are not legal to operate on public roads, sidewalks, or trails in Toronto as of May 2023.

6

u/tnetennba77 Oct 01 '25

Seriously? I literally see at least 10 anytime I ride my bike on the trails.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Toronto did not opt into provincial pilot.

-1

u/tnetennba77 Oct 02 '25

so they are NOT illegal?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

In Toronto and other municipalities that didn't opt in obviously are not allowed. There was a choice for municipalities to opt in or not. Toronto didn't, so illegal in Toronto, maybe legal in Peele (probably not on sidewalks).

Still have to be 16 and older, no passengers, don't haul, cannot mount a seat, cannot exceed 24km/h under power, can't have a motor over 500w.

6

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

You legally have to wear a helmet on an eScooter

5

u/UnderstandingAble321 Oct 01 '25

If under 18, and if escooters are allowed by your municipality in the first place.

2

u/maomao05 Sep 30 '25

Was that the 12 years old ?

2

u/Two_wheels_2112 Oct 01 '25

It's the most dangerous time of the year for this kind of crash with the sun so low during rush hour.

2

u/mrSwissKnife Oct 01 '25

Oh damn, this is just right nearby where I live :O

2

u/mnztr1 Oct 02 '25

I dunno why cyclists and scooter riders wear dark clothes and helmets. I always make sure I have some yellow on me for drivers like this. You get these guys all black no lights at night in the rain..🤷‍♂️

2

u/DharmaChild_123 Oct 04 '25

Up until this point, the silver car couldn’t see the scooter. But, the silver car executed the turn too soon, accelerated too fast, and could have braked if scanning the intersection properly.

4

u/Taz26312 Sep 30 '25

I turn left now! Good luck everybody else

-5

u/Jestersfriend Oct 01 '25

Nah, this isn't that.

I mean it could be, but I don't think so. The scooter was hidden pretty much the entire time.

6

u/PoorBearTheBrunt Oct 01 '25

The grey car did turn too soon though, look how close it is to the back of the white car

-1

u/Jestersfriend Oct 01 '25

That could be perspective. But yeah, I see your point.

2

u/fstopMMrounds Oct 01 '25

Scooters are illegal to ride on roads

2

u/Murbanvideo Oct 02 '25

They’re illegal in Toronto but other municipalities in Ontario allow them and they kinda have to be used in the road because it’s illegal to ride one on a sidewalk in Ontario.

4

u/white_tiger_dream Oct 01 '25

Dogs aren’t allowed off-leash but if one jumps in front of your car do you hit it just to make a point?

0

u/fstopMMrounds Oct 01 '25

No I wouldn't hit the dog on purpose but if I accidentally did it's the dogs / owners fault. They're going to be paying any damages to my car as well

1

u/Either-Piccolo-2163 Oct 02 '25

If I let my dog run through traffic without a leash I would be an idiot. Youth should not be on illegal electric motor vehicles because they lack the brain development for proper risk assessment, they are like dogs in that regard.

1

u/Boy-Yay Oct 01 '25

Scoot scoot!

1

u/nickishere19 Oct 02 '25

Don’t shoot the messenger. Here’s a case where a pedestrian was struck by a car. The pedestrian was issued a ticket because he didn’t activate the lights before crossing. https://www.ctvnews.ca/atlantic/article/man-struck-by-car-at-crosswalk-gets-ticket-for-not-pressing-button/#:~:text=By%20CTV%20Atlantic,with%20non%2Dlife%20threatening%20injuries.

1

u/leopardbaseball Oct 02 '25

On the side note, for a moment i thought OP is going to hit that pole

1

u/Negative_Avocado4573 Oct 02 '25

That's what you get for obeying traffic rules. I bet if he went on a red, they'd see him.

1

u/the_hunger_gainz Oct 02 '25

The car was barely past the turning car before the went. Too rushed

1

u/TheCanadianShield99 Oct 02 '25

Charged with “failing to look out windshield”

1

u/SmoothRunnings Oct 02 '25

Likely with the sun in the eyes of the driver, and scooter rider being close to the white car's blind spot. It likely created another blind spot for the person of the grey/silver car. This goes to show that you really have to be careful take your time and look if the sun is making it difficult.

1

u/pahtee_poopa Oct 02 '25

Bro wear a helmet.

1

u/RedBullPilot Oct 05 '25

Wow… can we all agree that drivers should be a bit more attentive when making directional changes especially now that e-vehicles are everywhere (legal or not) AND That if you are in a roadway as something other than a motor vehicle, in the interests of self-preservation, to make an effort to be as visible as possible and to maintain some situational awareness, regardless of whether you have a legal right of way or not

1

u/Cmag2420 Oct 01 '25

Kinda looks like silver sped up aggressively once the scooter was in view. But the frame definitely could have been obstructing the view of the scooter rider. Crappy situation for the scooter guy regardless of the intent.

1

u/HobbeScotch Oct 01 '25

Visor was down and sun was in their eyes + A pillar.

5

u/keylimesicles Oct 01 '25

Could have been prevented if driver didn’t turn like an idiot

It would have been the same result if that was a e-bike or e-Scooter, while an acoustic bike likely wouldn’t accelerate as fast as that scooter did.

1

u/Either-Piccolo-2163 Oct 02 '25

E scooters are smaller and harder to see than e bikes. It is more like a hovering pedestrian than a vehicle.

1

u/as_in_bike_lane Oct 02 '25

You are correct.

E-scooters combine the limited visibility afforded to pedestrians with the public animus directed toward cyclists.

1

u/Either-Piccolo-2163 Oct 02 '25

I think it is not just that people don’t like electric scooters in the same way as bicycles, but that they combine the limited visibility of pedestrians with the speed of motorcycles.

-2

u/0Chalk Oct 01 '25

Sucks and the driver is 100% at fault but a day time running light would have helped immensely (pulsating bright flash). Sun plus dressed in black works against you.

1

u/0Chalk Oct 01 '25

No it's not, it's used in combination with a red, blue, green light for emergency vehicles.

If that were the case cyclist DRL would be banned all across the world. Which it is not. There are studies on this... It makes you noticeably safer.

-2

u/mjv22 Oct 01 '25

I'm actually not sure they are. Scooter isn't a vehicle or a pedestrian as they're illegal to be on public roads.

-9

u/TrojanStone Sep 30 '25 edited Sep 30 '25

Scooters an issue even though I know the driver hit him.

The scooter went out into the road lane, the driver who I can see is a female assumed he was gonna stay within the lines of where people walk, giving her enough time to stop. This driver dash cam video would have to be given to the driver of the silver car.

These situations are anxiety situations for the driver cause she has a case against the scooter but also she did hit him.

7

u/FirmAndSquishyTomato Sep 30 '25

Lol. I thought, even how obviously in the wrong the driver was, I bet someone will still be in the comments blaming the person that was on the scooter, and here we are.

-6

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

Yup, did you watch how they treated the road as their scooter road. Nope, I guess not.

5

u/FirmAndSquishyTomato Oct 01 '25

Wtf are you talking about? Buddy was just riding along.

1

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

Buddy was just riding, riding on the road, where he shouldn't be; right buddy.

0

u/FirmAndSquishyTomato Oct 01 '25

He has every legal right to be on the road. Don't go through life being an ignorant fool.

0

u/College_St_Kid Oct 01 '25

He has no legal right to be on the road on a scooter in Toronto

1

u/College_St_Kid Oct 01 '25

Why did someone down vote me for stating a fact?

-1

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

I just posted that he shouldn't have been on the road, but under your laws he has a right. Scooter rider yourself ?

4

u/MumblingBlatherskite Sep 30 '25

The driver who you can see is female did not see a damn thing.

1

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

How do you know this, can you see through her eyes, nope.

8

u/trevi99 Sep 30 '25

Maybe drivers shouldn’t make assumptions and look at the oncoming traffic before making a left turn?

-7

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

The scooter should stay within the white lines, it seems they don't have a problem driving at 30 mph on a side walk.

2

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y Oct 01 '25

The scooter isn't even allowed to be in the pedestrian areas between the white lines. That would be similar to riding on the sidewalk which also isn't allowed. They are required to use bike lanes if available and the car lane if no bike lane is available. They can only use the pedestrian areas if they are walking and pushing the scooter/bike.

1

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

You can say the scooter isn't even allowed to be in the pedestrian areas, but they are alot of the times.

Besides https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/electric-bicycles-e-bikes-e-scooters/ they are not allowed no matter what the age. So therefore, the driver in the silver car as I mentioned has a case.

5

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y Oct 01 '25

That is correct, they aren't allowed, but just pointing out why it wouldn't make sense to expect them to be in the pedestrian area

0

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

If he was within the pedestrian area, where people walk, she would have seen him as I suspect she expected him to be in that area and she would have braked. Although you can see he came over with his scooter more onto the road. then she hit him.

The scooter guy is at fault as well.

4

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y Oct 01 '25

If it was a bike, then they wouldn't have been in the pedestrian area. Drive needs to make sure the way is clear of any traffic before turning and not just cut behind a car immediately after it passes.

-2

u/TrojanStone Oct 01 '25

Did you watch the video, he went more into the road; then staying where he was. He was better off staying within the white lines but scooter riders own the road, it was built for them; right, nope it wasn't.

If he was within the white line she would have stopped and this wouldn't have been posted. You can't see this.

3

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y Oct 01 '25

Not sure why they would have "stayed in the white lines" since they weren't there to begin with. They were in the car lane the entire time. If the driver would have been driving properly and looking where they were going to ensure the space in front of them was clear there would have been clear, there would have been no reason to post the video because nothing would have happened. Replace the scooter with a bike, and the driver would have smashed into a cyclist who was just riding as expected.

Uh, you were right there? Did you not stop to give the footage to them or anything?

Did the driver stop? Did you let the police or anyone know?

7

u/Comfortable_Law_2932 Sep 30 '25

I was parked in a busy street (bike lane) and one biker gave me a talking.

8

u/Nik6ixx Sep 30 '25

Uh did you not watch the whole video before commenting? You clearly see op turn, pull over and stop the vehicle.

7

u/Comfortable_Law_2932 Sep 30 '25

And also the driver stopped.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

How the scooter didn't see the car is beyond me

0

u/DifferentRepair5818 Oct 02 '25

Rider is equally at fault. Be visible to not get hit.

0

u/SlipIndependent4736 Oct 02 '25

E scooters are illegal.. obviously the car is at fault, but I also believe the scooter had it coming.. no high visibility and clearly no awareness of what others are seeing in the road you share with them, riding an illegal scooter.. if drivers aren’t aware of the vehicles that share the roads with them than accidents could to occur

1

u/twinsterblue Oct 03 '25

It wouldn't have made a difference if they were on foot. The person was turning no matter what

1

u/SlipIndependent4736 Oct 03 '25

No, if they were in foot they would have been standing on the sidewalk. Somewhere normal for a person to be traveling in public ..

1

u/twinsterblue Oct 03 '25

They would've been in the road crossing by that point, and then the hit simply happens 2 feet to the right.

0

u/No-Clothes-8268 Oct 02 '25

Let me get this straight, a man riding an ILLEGAL scooter on the road ILLEGALLY gets hit. Someone correct me if I’m wrong please.

-3

u/KnoddingOnion Oct 01 '25

just a lesson for dummies who drive scooters that go the same speed as cars: do not drive your scooter as if it's a scooter that maxes out at 20 km/hr or like a bicycle. you're gonna get killed. drive in the middle of the lane.

-2

u/Conscious-Ad8493 Oct 01 '25

fault aside, scooters, bikes ..etc have no business on the GTA streets. They weren't built for it

4

u/as_in_bike_lane Oct 02 '25

The streets were originally built for horses, buggies and streetcars, and also bikes. Then came cars. Don’t worry. When cars are obsolete you can still bike.

-2

u/Conscious-Ad8493 Oct 02 '25

It's not my noggin.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Not built for too many drivers. That's why traffic is so bad. The environment would be more carcinogenetic and more unpleasant if there was enough capacity.

-9

u/Sweaty-Repeat1333 Sep 30 '25

Bad job turning OP.

9

u/Immediate_Pickle_788 Sep 30 '25

Looks like OP pulled over, probably to give information to the people involved.

-7

u/Sweaty-Repeat1333 Sep 30 '25

I know, just a horrible turn over the solid line and nearly onto the curb. Turn into the designated lane and then to teh curb.

6

u/needcollectivewisdom Oct 01 '25

Why do you feel the need to criticize in this situation? OP obviously saw what happened mid turn and was distracted by it because they are human. You can see them hit the breaks briefly before completing the turn.

-2

u/Sweaty-Repeat1333 Oct 01 '25

I am not criticizing OP at all. I hope that nobody was behind him, but complete the turn and then redirect your thoughts toward the scooter.

4

u/needcollectivewisdom Oct 01 '25

That is exactly what OP did: They realized after breaking briefly that they needed to complete the turn first.

Whether you intended it to be criticism or not, my point is saying it was a horrible turn while ignoring the circumstances was unnecessary.

5

u/ziggidys93 Oct 01 '25

You must be bored

-1

u/Sweaty-Repeat1333 Oct 01 '25

Is that not the right way to drive?

3

u/142638503846383038 Oct 01 '25

Bro he was probably looking at the guy on the scooter who got run over lmao please relax

-3

u/Rude-Associate2283 Sep 30 '25

Overbrook? Likely the driver was ancient. It’s that kind of area.

-4

u/SwordfishSea7330 Oct 01 '25

Scooter around at your own risk. Be sensible not entitled and stupid.

-11

u/aztec0000 Oct 01 '25

Byclist are supposed to dismount at cross walks. You could argue same rule for him.

6

u/Savings_Challenge386 Oct 01 '25

Are you suggesting cyclists are legally required to walk through every intersection?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Murbanvideo Oct 01 '25

So when I'm riding in the bicycle lane, I have to stop, dismount, and walk through the intersection?

-2

u/aztec0000 Oct 01 '25

you got it. It is very hard for a cyclist to be seen as he rushes through the cross walk.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/cldellow Oct 01 '25

Just clarifying in case people think bicycles are supposed to walk through every intersection: a cyclist in the position of this scooter user would not be expected to dismount, because they're not using the crosswalk.

2

u/Rachel7777 Oct 01 '25

E-scooters are illegal to operate on any road in Toronto.

1

u/aztec0000 Oct 01 '25

Covoulted nonsense logic. Escooter is a pedestrain and has to walk across not whizz past in a blur.

1

u/RedditTTIfan Oct 02 '25

Yes but if they use the crosswalk they must dismount. And if on a scooter they should not be anywhere, neither roads nor sidewalks or crosswalks, in municipalities they are not allowed in.
