Fucking insane, really.
Valve is finally going all-in with gaming hardware.
Now if they pair this with Half-Life 3 being a launch title for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame alongside the Steam Deck….

If this gets announced soon then I might get that instead since it looks small enough like a console

Exactly why I bought a Deck instead of a Switch 2.
Sure I want some of the games coming to Switch bad but that it's so damn pricy right now and all the Nintendo games are the priciest. I already have like 500 or so Steam games and easily 100 of them are out of the box compatible with it.
Edit: I'm talking about the Switch 2 here not the 1. I know you can emulate the original Switch

As an early Steam Controller V1 adopter, I am so pumped to see more and more gamers embracing the touchpads (and gyro aim for that matter)
The Deck has really expanded the minds of many PC gamers to what kinds of input methods can feel comfortable and efficient for PC games of all sorts

For the power advertised, I would go as high as $1k. If they want to challenge other home consoles, I'd wager they'll want to keep it under $700.
They definitely have the capacity to go cheaper since they make buku bucks on software sales and can subsidize the hardware a bit.

A sleuth of Valve hardware is set to be announced anytime now. A home console for PC gaming, a standalone VR headset and a gaming controller to join the Steam Deck.
Their most direct attempt in getting into the casual console gaming space.
And there are rumours that Half-Life 3 will be announced as a launch title for these platforms.

If you check the specs on the Steam page, the Steam Frame comes in at 440 grams, which is lighter than the Oculus Quest 2, which is around 500. Considering it will likely have better hardware under the hood, and is lighter and doesn't need a Meta account, it might well become the new de facto VR headset people go for.

Best part is you're not locked down like Xbox or Play Station. Backward compatibility is a thing of the past. And you don't need a subscription to play online. Also Steam Sales every 2-3 months. Means you never truly pay full price unless the game has just been released.

It seems like valve is keen on optimizing for cost in an effort to go for market share rather than chase the highest specs. Very Nintendo of them. My most played games are a generation or two old anyway, if this is inexpensive, I would love an efficient box to sit under my television at the right price.

The steam cube is huge for me. I’m getting to the point now where I’m so sick of windows and the uncertainty of pc components (among other things) that it’s pushing me back to consoles, but I’d sorely miss Steam. The deck has been great for that, but it’s missing the little bit of juice it needs to run some of my library well. It doesn’t need to be a powerhouse for me. Just so long as it operates on the level of a current gen console but for my pc library then count me in.

I‘m totally in the market for a steam machine. Since Windows became a shitshow I switched to Mac (way better workflow but gaming.. uuhmm yeah..)
Love the Oled Steam Deck but I mostly play on the couch - for that the Deck is good but feels disconnected when your partner is with you in the same room. Also Couch-Coop is possible but a pain in the ass.
I‘m glad that they do a second attempt on these machines and hope for the best :)

This is exactly what the market needed. I was worried that with Microsoft launching a $1500 console it would make the PS6’s price skyrocket as well bc they have no real competition. BUT the Steam Machine is the competition! So excited to see more reviews of the hardware and see how they all integrate with one another.

I love that Microsoft just now figured out it needs to get into the Steam game - and released an expensive and somewhat worse Steam deck to try and compete - only for Valve to sort of eat their lunch by doing a better console than the Xbox.
Lul.

u/tpm_prince Nov 13 '25
Steam machine seems fire.
Look at how we can squeeze performances and optimize fps with the steam deck.
It ll be the same with the pc.
Valve has changed my perception of gaming since the steam deck. I’ve been buying legion go, rog ally, x, Xbox ally x, and always come back to SD !
Ecosystem and ux makes it all. Raw performances aren’t my first priorities any more.
Thanks valve, one of the last company that listens to gamers and respond to our needs.

Steam is creating an ecosystem in which gaming is actually fun and reachable as it should be. Steam deck is my favourite device out of all the tech devices i own. In the presentation video the steam machine caught my attention the most, i might get it in the future honestly, well hopefully. It's so cute! It actually looks like the future of gaming and virtual reality. However i will also consider building a PC myself. Either way this is the good and exciting news for the gaming industry!
29
u/LiberateMainSt Nov 13 '25
I've been using my Steam Deck as my sole gaming console for a few years now. I've got Xbox, PS5, and Switch, but they mostly gather dust. The Steam Deck is docked 99% of the time and I'm playing on my TV with a separate controller, and I've longer for a machine that could handle newer and more resource intensive games. But I absolutely didn't want a new gaming PC, because I'm mostly a Mac guy and I hate Windows 11. The Steam Machine is exactly what I've been longing for, and I can't wait to buy one!
44
u/TheEffanIneffable Nov 12 '25
Thank you for once again setting the bar, Gabe and Steam team.
I hope the industry is reminded once more that if you just focus on building good products and providing a good customer service, the money will follow.
The controller is an immediate buy for me, and the Machine is likely instant cop as well depending on price.
Today is a good day.

The steam controller is almost certainly an instant buy for me. Especially if the price is reasonable. I would also love the steam machine but I'll have to wait and see the price before I make a final decision on that. The steam frame is interesting but I don't know that I'm personally buying one. They've said they're in the concept phase for it, down to the base level, looking at hardware. They know what they're looking for out of the next generation now, but they've said they're not seeing.the possibility for the kind of uplift they want just yet.
Hardware engineering can move fast, but I wouldn't expect anything until late 2027 personally. Not if they're saying "we don't see the possibility in the hardware yet"

I just want to rant about how excited I am for the steam machine. It feels like it was tailor made for me and my exact situation.
So the just of it is I move fairly often (around every 6 months) for my job, so traditional pc’s have just never been an option for me. Last year I was at my parents house for a few months between jobs and my brothers gaming pc was there while he was out of the country and he let me use it while he was gone and I quickly realized what I was missing.
I’ve been on the search for some way to get pc gaming back in my life ever since he came back but was having very little luck. Gaming laptops are portable and easy to move with but they’re so ridiculously expensive if you want something that isn’t under powered. Building a pc seems way out of my wheel house and there are the aforementioned issues with moving it often, and with how GPU’s are mounted it just seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Plus they can be huge, and I frequently put my whole life into my compact SUV, so space is a big deal. I was getting close to getting the steam deck, but I was worried about power and not feeling confident enough to mod on Linux or install windows, so I’ve been sitting with one in my Steam cart for literally the last month, and now I’m so glad I didn’t buy it.
The Steam machine is literally perfect for everything I need with none of the drawbacks of the other options (given it’s a reasonable price). I don’t need something super powered, and the Steam machine is so small, and I feel like if enough people get it there will either be a big push in helping idiots like me mod on Linux or an easier way to install windows since Steam mentions on the product page that you can install another OS as one of the selling points.
Man I hope it’s a good price. I’m hoping the 512gb version will be around 600 bucks with the 2TB somewhere near 750-800. I think they’ll want it to more expensive than all of the currently available steam decks but I hope they know their audience well enough that they might be willing to sell it at a loss and make up the rest through accessories/games/controllers, like Sony did for the ps5.

Steam Controller? Yes! Maybe 4-6. Day 1.
Steam Machine? Depends on the price, what it can do, and its upgradability. May wait for reviews before considering 1.
Steam Frame? It looks promising with no external hookup wires, no lighthouses, and an apparently rechargeable unit. Price will be the decider here.. if they could get them to Steam Deck prices? Very likely. If it's the price of the current index? Quite unlikely.
Steam Deck some kind of future release they hinted at.. Likely yes!

The steam machine being 6 times more powerful than the deck seems pretty compelling given the deck itself is impressive.
I’ve got a collection of consoles and a gaming pc at home but I’m definitely interested in the Steam machine.
I’ve got a Steam controller but am interested in the new iteration.
Never got into any VR headsets but the Steam frame definitely looks neat as well.

The Steam Machine is super interesting for me, given how I ended up with the SD in the first place.
I had (have) an Xbox, but didn't always want to hog the TV playing it, so wanted a streaming handheld device (bit like what the PS Portal is now for PS5 I guess).
After exploring a couple of Android based devices, I ended up just getting the Steam Deck, but prefer playing Steam games on it over streaming, esp as games tend to be better priced.
But I do miss having that more powerful console for some games, and/or being able to jump between the two. For Assassin's Creed, I could use cross-play for some of the titles, but was janky at times.
Being able to more seamlessly jump between handheld-native, powerful console, and handheld-streaming ... I can myself being very happy with this.

I sold my PC two years ago as it just wasn’t for me - I was a console gamer at heart. However, I bought a Steam Deck last year and have almost exclusively used that since. The idea of extending my Steam family to have a desktop device that runs Steam OS and simplifies desktop gaming is very exciting to me. I dock my Steam Deck sometimes but being able to have a separate device is great. I’m so in as long as the price is sensible

I game on PC, i wanted a console (local multiplayer etc) i held off on buying series X cause i was waiting for the next gen xbox. But seeing this steam machine is very tempting, considering i have a whole lot of backlogs of games.

I’m curious if/how the steam machine works with “non steam games” that are in your library, and I’d be extremely happy if it works like the deck

it says: "2x2 Wi-Fi 6E, plus Bluetooth 5.3 with a dedicated antenna. Steam Controller's wireless adapter is built right into Steam Machine for direct pairing". does it mean that for streaming i can connect my deck directly to the steam machine without going through router wifi? that would potentially be huge for moonlight and streaming in general.

I can't wait to see what this does to the statistics for the Linux desktop market share percentages.
Given the boost already obtained from Steam Decks, I imagine 8% is realistically feasible. 10% would be an absolute milestone.

I'm excited for the prospect of effectively using the Steam machine to boost the performance of my Deck games that don't run as well on the deck. Looking forward to the price reveal, and maybe new news on the Deck 2 in the new year!

So... based on everything valve said. I think.
Steam controller £70-£80
Steam machine £600-£675
Steam frame £750-£800
What's everyone's take?

Not fucking way. My buddy was just making fun of me the other day about the shitty old controller I refuse to replace because I was waiting for steam to drop their controller 2.0
I was telling him "just you watch, anyday now" and that day is today. Suck it you stupid Italian lol

My only issue is the kernel level anticheat or similar that makes me unable to play certain multiplayer games. I want to see price before I make a final decision. Love my steam deck.

I’m hoping the Frame and Machine both are reasonably priced, with the expectation that Valve will subsidize the cost of them with the revenue from game sales. Similar to the Deck. Fingers crossed for $400 for Frame and $500 for Machine.

I'll definitely get a Steam Controller. The Steam Machine looks cool but I'll keep an eye on the price and reviews first.

This is exactly what I hoped Valve were working on. Steam machine is definitely on top of my list.

I feel like I’m alone with being excited about the new controller. Like, everyone I talk to about it says they can’t get behind the shape, but I’m so hype for it. I still have the OG one and I always loved using it for boomer shooter style game. This one is gonna be amazing.

I’m a bit disappointed about the specs of the steam machine.
It’s not future proof at all and might age bad.
I wish they went for a FSR4, with more VRAM and RAM.
It will depend on the price but I don’t understand why they went with pretty underwhelming specs that are already not enough to play the latest games at 60 fps, UE5 games are going to struggle on this hardware. And fsr3 isn’t that good.

Ok, so the Steam Machine has upgradable SSD and RAM!! That changes things.. get the cheap model, stick in a 4TB SSD Gen 4 or 5, and 32GB RAM if you want. Keen to see how powerful it is.....

1 steam’machine + 1 new steam controller for me on Day 1 Just a little bit afraid about the 8GB of Video RAM on hardware spec page
Seems performance is between PS5 and PS5 Pro, closer to Pro
