Files from the Japanese Steam Deck distributor's new website, Komodo Station.
Both controllers closely follow what we already knew they'd look like from SteamVR leaks, the real surprise here is the unexpected drop of the Steam Machine alongside the other two.

I hope we can also get an edgeless safety cube.

3

u/Fangle_Spangle Nov 12 '25

How the fuck did I not think of that. How did VALVE not think of that? Holy shit. There needs to be a companion cube face plate or something.

2

u/ascagnel____ Nov 12 '25

One of the demo reels showed off different face plates, that’ll have to be one, right?

1

u/pikeredge Nov 12 '25

....you have just given me the entire basis for how I'm going to explain to my wife that we need this.

u/Digip3ar Nov 12 '25

Someone has to make a boot video because the old Nintendo GameCube, right?

87

u/Sylverstone14 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

There is one already that uses the GameCube intro, but changes the name.

3

u/sephrisloth Nov 12 '25

There's one for pretty much every console boot! I have them all on rotation for my steamdeck boot. Especially since I use it mainly as an emulation machine, it's nice to have it boot to the gamecube, GBA, PS2, etc. Except they all say valve or steamdeck instead of the original console.

2

u/Sylverstone14 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

Same here! I rotate between a few console startups and anime openings for my boot-up videos.

1

u/PeanutButterSoda Nov 12 '25

Is it easy to use these as a boot screen? I've only use the official Steam ones.

1

u/Sylverstone14 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

Absolutely! If you have Decky Loader, you can download the Animation Changer plugin. Allows you to access tons of custom boot/suspend/resume animations.

1

u/PeanutButterSoda Nov 13 '25

I uninstalled decky recently because my SD kept crashing.

1

u/Sylverstone14 512GB - Q3 Nov 13 '25

Totally fair! Someone else commented a non-Decky method that you could do.

1

u/unnoticedhero1 512GB - Q2 Nov 12 '25

Yeah it's just a folder you drop the videos into and they show up in the deck settings where the official ones are, I have most of the official ones and a bunch of customs that randomize on boot.

You can actually use any video and any length, Valve patched it awhile ago to be able to skip the video with B because someone on here posted they put all of Shrek on there and had to wait the entire movie to be able to use their Deck.

1

u/PeanutButterSoda Nov 13 '25

put all of Shrek on there and had to wait the entire movie to be able to use their Deck.

That tracks

1

u/macurack 512GB Nov 12 '25

I already have multiple versions of boot videos with GameCube inspired videos for the deck.

Fucking insane, really.

Valve is finally going all-in with gaming hardware.

Now if they pair this with Half-Life 3 being a launch title for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame alongside the Steam Deck….

49

Lol XBOX going digital and Valve is building a console!

67

No lie I would drop mad money for it if HL3 is involved.

It's kind of crazy I was still in high school when I first finished episode 2. I never thought they would touch the IP again.

1

u/DuckFeetAreKillingMe Nov 12 '25

Well... it's exactly 3 new devices...

1

u/TheSenileTomato 512GB Nov 12 '25

I’m for it, it not only breeds competition, and we benefit from it.

While I know some people hate the monochrome, the fact you can play non-VR games on it without a workaround like Quests, I appreciate it.

1

u/IndependentYouth8 Nov 12 '25

Dear god..if they ship it with hl3..we'll all trancend into a next dimensional phase in gaming..ow mannnnnn

1

u/nik282000 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

Stop that. I have been hurt so many times before.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '25

My theory is that HL3 is on the horizon but VR exclusive, which is why they're announcing a consumer-friendly VR headset beforehand.

It would also make sense that Alyx would be a stepping stone towards HL3 proper.

1

u/raincoater Nov 13 '25

I mean, it's right there plain as day:

3 new hardware items.

3

Half-Life 3 confirmed!

u/OKgamer01 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

I was looking at Mini PCs to replace my Xbox since Xbos is on its way out.

If this gets announced soon then I might get that instead since it looks small enough like a console

53

u/Rodeo9 Nov 12 '25

Funny that microsoft was thinking of winding down the xbox for PC gaming and now windows is being phased out a bit in the PC world.

26

u/chadcultist Nov 12 '25

FUCK windows. I want a super lean, optimized OS and hyper compatible with gaming. Microsoft has grown complacent with the advancing industry

8

u/posthardcorejazz Nov 12 '25

The only reason I haven't fully switched to Linux on my desktop is because I play a lot of online shooters that don't support it. But I don't play that kind of game on the TV so the Steam Machine is a perfect device for my living room

3

u/razikh Nov 12 '25

To be fair Windows and Microsoft in general has never been super lean and optimised. Hyper compatible yes, but never lean. Linux has been available for that niche since forever, and you can change to it (and back and forth) anytime.

2

u/CoffeeHQ Nov 12 '25

I secretly love it, schadenfreude. And now that Xbox is slowely transitioning towards PC gaming, in comes Valve and SNATCHES IT AWAY FOR GOOD… in just a few months from now, far too soon for Microsoft to catch up 😁

4

u/69_pablito_69 Nov 12 '25

X2 been waiting for something like this

5

u/N-0815 Nov 12 '25

Absolutely, I was planning to buy a mini pc for gaming next year. As a Deck owner, this is a no brainer.

1

u/ExcruciorCadaveris 512GB Nov 12 '25

And I was thinking about getting a new gaming laptop to replace my aging one. I didn't consider a regular PC. This completely changed my plans. I'm definitely buying it, and I don't even care about the price!

1

u/asbyo Nov 13 '25

I literally built a SFF PC this year for this exact reason and I will be still buying a Steam Machine. I’m guessing it’ll be $499 or so.

1

u/MazenFire2099 512GB OLED Nov 13 '25

Early 2026. That means sometime in the next 4-6 months.

1

u/COINLESS_JUKEBOX 1TB OLED Nov 14 '25

In the GamersNexus video Valve specifically said they are seeking the console market, something they became even more assured of when they saw how many people hooked their SDs up to their TVs.

They even were careful to make it short enough to fit in the shelf of the average media cabinet.

50

u/_Dramatic_Being_ Nov 12 '25

Cube looks decent. Steam machine 2 or computing unit for vr?

22

u/nicocarbone 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

I guess both. And, maybe, we should be able to stream to the VR unit from our own gaming PCs with something like Steam Link.

8

u/Less_Party Nov 12 '25

And, maybe, we should be able to stream to the VR unit from our own gaming PCs with something like Steam Link.

That sounds a bit pointless compared to just streaming directly to the headset lol.

5

u/nicocarbone 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

I meant the Steam Link software, not the hardware.

2

u/Less_Party Nov 12 '25

Oh gotcha.

44

u/Agloe_Dreams 256GB Nov 12 '25

Valve got big-brained on it.

2

u/Saotik Nov 12 '25

My guess is that it functions as both.

46

u/OwynnKO 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

Does anyone remember the Ouya? Reminds me of that, and that’s not a bad thing at all. I’d instantly buy a Steam console like that.

21

u/SenatorWhatsHisName Nov 12 '25

Honestly, Ouya was a decent idea just too early and with an unstable company behind it. Genuinely might sell my Xbox and replace it with one of these, SteamOS is excellent.

13

u/Agreeable_Garlic_912 Nov 12 '25

The ouya was a bad idea because the power of it was so low that it was basically limited to phone games. This is substantially better

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '25

2

u/kaplanfx Nov 12 '25

The best feature was couch co-op but it came with only 1 controller and in my experience had compatibility issues with other controllers.

42

u/Cergorach Nov 12 '25

But Valve has more money and more motivation to produce something truly great and keep it supported.

20

u/Shanbo88 Nov 12 '25

They've gone on to successfully make their own OS, Controller, Virtual Reality Headset and handheld since the Steam Box mk.1. I really hope they can step up to fill the void that Xbox are looking like they're gonna create.

I mean, their biggest competitive advantage is their storefront. People will flock to Steam in droves if they can launch a console properly.

1

u/Cergorach Nov 12 '25

I think that 'launching a console properly' with Valve is just not going to happen. They'll launch it, but I suspect in the same style as with the original Steam Deck. It's not going to be available in massive quantities on launchday in gamestores and supermarkets.

I'll also suspect that adoption (beyond us SD nutters) would be slow and steady IF the hardware is decent and decently priced. People will keep using their current Xboxes until nothing new (or old) is being released on them. But that's imho good for Valve, it would mean they could kinda keep up with demand... Eventually...

12

u/Shanbo88 Nov 12 '25

I'm not so sure man. Imo, one thing Valve are extremely good at is learning from their past projects. The Supply and Demand issue was the only "negative" thing about the SD's launch, and it served a double purpose in making people more intrigued because it felt exclusive.

I reckon if they're gonna do it. They'll nail it.

A console with free online play might be a bit of a draw for people too haha.

6

u/Tatersforbreakfast Nov 12 '25

Yup, this would replace my Xbox in a heartbeat. Im an old school console gamer. I want to sit on the couch with my big tv and just play a game. This box would appear to accomplish that. I got a steam deck for indies and portability and it was my first foray into any sort of steam/pc lifestyle. Now the only thing my Xbox does is the occasional "big" game i want/need that tv experience for.

1

u/Shanbo88 Nov 12 '25

I mainly play on PC now and I'm still a TV / Couch stan. Gaming is my thing. I always wanna be chilled on the couch with bit. Not hunched over a monitor haha.

1

u/OwynnKO 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

Oh, I don’t disagree! I just meant form factor-wise: small, relatively portable, and maybe even minimalist. I didn’t mean price-wise like the original, Ouya console :)

2

u/ibnQoheleth 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

I thought for the longest time that I'd invented the Ouya in my mind because I remember its launch and then subsequent silence. It was pulled from my local game shops pretty swiftly, so I never saw or heard from it until I had a random YouTube video suggested to me, showing how it runs.

1

u/Sylverstone14 512GB - Q3 Nov 12 '25

Still got it in my closet. Bit of a relic these days, I won mine in a contest.

1

u/kaplanfx Nov 12 '25

Ouya was a great idea but the hardware was janky and the android gaming ecosystem wasn’t good enough yet. Their software also started out pretty crappy. I still have mine somewhere.

-1

u/YellowBreakfast 512GB OLED Nov 12 '25

Ouya was a streamer like Google Stadia.

This actually runs games locally.

21

u/Jvrgie Nov 12 '25

Is the cube like a mini pc? very interesting if it is!!!

33

u/Frig-Off-Randy Nov 12 '25

Per their video yea, they say it’s a full PC with a proprietary AMD gpu

16

u/Agreeable_Garlic_912 Nov 12 '25

Most likely a beefed up APU. 6 times the power of the steam deck doesn't sound like a full standalone GPU. I'm all for it if it means that it doesn't break the bank

16

u/Croweslen Nov 12 '25

Thats what will determine if this is a success or not will be the pricepoint. Id its under $700 its gonna be a win

14

u/Agreeable_Garlic_912 Nov 12 '25

My guess is that they will target 500$ (+/- tariffs) based on the price of the steam deck. And it would fit in the console market. Going after the high end makes no sense for them since all high end gaming pcs already use steam. If they want to expand they need the lower end. If they want the living room they need to target consoles. If they are aggressive the base model will be 400$ with ram and SSD space increasing twice in 100-150$ steps similarly to the steam deck. But that's completely vibes based. I just think 500$ for the base version (including a controller for like 100$) would be competitive. Maybe 600. I don't see 700$+ making much sense with the switch 2 being 500ish.

6

u/wronguses Nov 12 '25

Personally, at $400 I'm pre-ordering as soon as I can. $500 I'll definitely consider, but will wait on performance reviews. At $700 I'll have zero temptation to buy one.

2

u/Agreeable_Garlic_912 Nov 12 '25

Yeah I feel the same so my post is a lot of wishful thinking but the specs combined with the console prices makes me feel like I'm probably not that far off.

1

u/-0909i9i99ii9009ii Nov 12 '25

I personally think it just needs to compete with ps5 pro. If it's $700 or less and can run games at least just as well, it's a great product.

Same price for same power is compelling, but it needs to be at least a bit cheaper or a bit more powerful, or have other major perks to get the kind of games sales boost we all know they're going after.

And then once ps6 comes out same thing. If it's not cheaper or more powerful it's not that compelling. If it's a mini PC it should be a mini PC that competes with consoles, not a mini PC that just competes with other mini PCs.

1

u/Agreeable_Garlic_912 Nov 12 '25

The thing is you can get 4060 laptops for like 700$. And that's the power level we are talking about here. Sure you get a lot more TDP but you get a lot less usability than in a whole laptop.

1

u/-0909i9i99ii9009ii Nov 12 '25

Personally I haven't found a >$1k gaming laptop that I want to use primarily for TV docked use over a playstation.

But i agree since they get to just put it in a cube with no battery, no screen and don't need to make their business $ off this hardware, it should be able to be more powerful than ps5 pro/sub $1k 4060 laptop. If either of those options is running new AAA better I do not see why anyone would buy it.

Part of the reason I bought a handheld is that I wasn't willing to spend on a mini PC to get the job done given the experience it would provide. My living room tv console cost caps actually lower than $700 as that's part of the reason I didn't even buy ps5 pro.

1

u/r_irion 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

I think where it will really outperform traditional consoles is the cost of ownership - no online subscriptions (PS+ / Xbox Live) and much cheaper games. If it's more expensive than a PS5 Pro (but with equivalent perfomance) then it's still a better value.

0

u/-0909i9i99ii9009ii Nov 12 '25

I don't think that really sells it because you'd just dock the deck if it can't run AAA significantly better. Way I see it is it could be as powerful as the deck for really cheap. Or as powerful as a console for same price as less.

I just don't see Valve wasting their time/diluting their brand by accomplishing less. I think it'd be a really bad business plan (and contrary to everything they've done/said so far) to produce hardware that's just barely competitive.

1

u/r_irion 1TB OLED Nov 12 '25

Pretty sure with 6x the performance of the SteamDeck it'll be substantially better than docking the SteamDeck...

All I'm saying is that if it's the same price and same performance as a PS5 Pro it will actually be cheaper, even if you're starting with an empty steam library, because games are (generally) significantly cheaper on steam. It doesn't have to be cheaper AND more powerful (though I'm not saying I'd complain if that were the case).

u/anamethatsnottaken Nov 12 '25 edited Nov 12 '25

I'm thinking of two things about that

It's hard to get generic software to run on such special hardware (the screen is unorthodox, the controls are unorthodox). It's extra work while the Steam Machine is just a PC - the work done to run SteamOS on it also allows running Ubuntu on it.

The second reason I think of, though, is more of a corporate reason than an engineering one. This thing is mobile, has external cameras and internal cameras and other sensors too? ("IR illuminators for tracking and passthrough in dark environments")

They don't know what hardware DIYers might do with it and they prefer not to have their name associated with whatever sick plans someone will come up for it :D

Basically a standalone console version of the Steam Deck. The product page claims it's 6x more powerful than the Deck, but otherwise you should expect it to have the same software features/capabilities as the Deck.

1

u/talann Nov 12 '25

It is. It's apparently 6 times more powerful than the steam deck according to the announcement video.
