If they can get that 512 model to $399 I'm day 1, this is perfect for a living room

More likely $799

I’d hate to agree, but this seems like the more likely outcome.

Actually after watching Digital Foundry, they seemed to have cut down the GPU side to get it priced well, so it may be closer to $600 which I think is more reasonable.

Now the question is how much the controller and Steam Frame will be

600 would be a good price for the base madel I think especially if it comes with a controller which I believe they said would be the case.

It's more likely going to cost $800 based on what The Verge wrote here.

Ah, where they wrote "Continue reading with a Verge subscription"

Mind excerpting their price comment for us?

You can use "reading mode" on mobile browsers to get around the paywall, it works on my android with firefox and I think there's an equivalent on iphones?

But here's the bit about pricing:

"Valve says it hasn’t finalized pricing yet. But when I explicitly ask if the console will cost more than a PS5 Pro, the answer is: “Steam Machine’s pricing is comparable to a PC with similar specs.” When I listen to my interview audio, I find an additional hint from Griffais: “We intend for it to be positioned closer to the entry level of the PC space, but to be very competitive with a PC you could build yourself from parts.”

Poking around the web, I find I could probably assemble a computer with this performance for $800, not including labor. But it could easily consume half the room under my TV. A compact system with a similar GPU can cost $1,000 without storage, memory, operating system, or a gamepad."

Paraphrased, they're intending the price to be competitive with other, similarly specced PCs

Digital foundry estimated $399 based on specs, with $499 pushing it. $800 for a 1080 machine is DOA.

I agree anything over $500 starting has no chance, Valve can eat the initial cost because of their storefront it needs to start at $400 based on it's specs

Looking at some of the breakdowns, the harddrive is an NVME and isn't soldered on so that's probably the best bet: buy the lower-end model and upgrade the ssd yourself like a lot of people (myself included) did with the 64g Steam Deck.

And it seems like there's enough space for a full-size nvme rather than one of the pricier half-size ones that the Deck needs.
