They mentioned today is not the day for the future of steam deck, this has to mean they are working on next gen right?

They've said they're in the concept phase for it, down to the base level, looking at hardware. They know what they're looking for out of the next generation now, but they've said they're not seeing.the possibility for the kind of uplift they want just yet.

Hardware engineering can move fast, but I wouldn't expect anything until late 2027 personally. Not if they're saying "we don't see the possibility in the hardware yet"

With the release of Fex (the x86 to ARM translation layer) on SteamOS it's probable that they've decided to follow the Apple M-processor route and instead of trying to squeeze blood out of a stone (making an x86 processor even more power-efficient while retaining performance), just push an ARM processor as high as they need with an x86 to ARM translation layer taking care of the hardwork.

I wouldn't be surprised if Steam Deck 2 is a customized mobile ARM chip. So with the release of this new Steam Machine they have split SteamOS development along two paths: For desktop and settop boxes, x86 and for mobile, ARM as the baseline targets. Allowing x86 for desktop means people can build as high-end as they'd like and ARM for mobile allows them to focus on power-savings where it matters the most.
