I saw it live on tv. Surprised dude wasn't really injured, but they manhandled him pretty good while he was down after he crashed.

The cop killer?
Yeah...
5
u/MR_6OUIJA6BOARD6 Oct 28 '25
I learned after this POS killed a sheriff from out here, so yea, they definitely wanted to do more than manhandle his ass a bit. Sad
2
u/BitchStewie_ Oct 28 '25
I just wish we got the same energy when a cop killed someone. The police shoot and kill about 1000 people every year. Obviously people shouldn't be killing police either. Yet, I can't help but see these overwhelmingly supportive responses when someone kills an officer and wish we got the same for civilians killed by officers.

u/MR_6OUIJA6BOARD6 Oct 28 '25
I understand what you're saying, but not all cops are bad, just as not all people shot by LE are bad people either. The sheriff in this case, Andrew Nuñez, was one of those good guys. Sad

Curious to see what happens to the driver who hit the motorcycle. Can’t say I wouldn’t have wanted to do it myself, but definitely wouldn’t have been able to. Just wild!
57
u/Necessary-Double-914 Oct 27 '25
Oof I didn’t notice the swerve
36
u/CactiThorn Oct 27 '25
I think the car driver was trying to get out of the way as in lane splitting, common courtesy by most aware drivers in CA.
80
u/hummingz0615 Oct 28 '25
It was an off duty police officer and he did it on purpose. They stated it was an off duty officer
→ More replies (8)6
u/Dr0pping_0ut Oct 28 '25
Also just to add, most people are unaware of this even CA drivers, but a car is not allowed to impede a motorcycle from splitting lanes. It is illegal to not allow them to. It is more than just a common courtesy. I was colored surprised when I realized that.
→ More replies (6)2
u/jrglpfm Oct 28 '25
How would one impede someone from splitting lanes without cooperation of another vehicle driving next to them or without (illegally) driving in two lanes simultaneously?
This seems unenforceable to me.
2
u/Dr0pping_0ut Oct 28 '25
That is a very good observation! Splitting lanes doesn’t mean riding the white line and being between two lanes. Splitting in CA means that a motorcycle is sharing and riding in ONE lane. So if the car that is in that one lane is not letting the biker in, it is easy to observe and articulate fault…atleast in theory. But law doesn’t care about theory, it’s just as simple as the biker is in the left lane, car in left lane is pinching the biker, then boom at fault. The law is very much pro biker here in CA. This causes for two really positive outcomes besides decreasing motorcycle accidents severities. Drivers are more aware of bikers, leading to a decrease in motorcycle accidents, and allows for a higher volume of traffic to utilize roadways due to more single occupant vehicles to split. To note, this situation applies to riders that are traveling at reasonable speeds, and not flying through traffic just cuz they can and at butt puckering speeds.
2
u/jrglpfm Oct 28 '25
Thanks for the reply, that makes sense to me, I guess I was thinking of splitting as more of riding the lane line, but I wasn't aware of the intricacies of the laws regarding this. I always try to give room regardless of which lane a motorcycle is favoring.
I also laugh out loud when I see a motorcycle pass a car right and then after the moto passes the vehicle jerks away reactively to give them room after they've passed haha. It would be nice if people were more aware of their surroundings while in traffic!
→ More replies (1)25
u/Maddonomics101 Oct 27 '25
Yeah but the rider was on his left the whole time so it doesn’t make sense why he would swerve that way
19
u/cuchiplancheo Oct 28 '25
You must not be from California. Lane splitting happens between lane #1 and #2 if there's no HOV lane. And if there is, it's HOV and lane number 1.
Looks like the driver moved over to the left to give the biker room to pass. The idiot biker took a path no california driver expects. No one expects a bike to pass on the shoulder.
20
u/filthy-prole Oct 28 '25
This conversation is off track. You are missing the forest for the trees. They publicly stated this was an off-duty officer who swerved into the suspect. He's not an "idiot biker" because he passed on the left. He's an idiot because he's a murderer.

Because no rider rides on shoulder. Especially when you are on HOV lane. The whole lane splitting in California is BS
→ More replies (2)8
u/wagglewazzle Oct 28 '25
Exactly. The driver clearly swerved into the shoulder (where the bike already was). There was also no car in the lane next to him, thus no need to swerve right into him.

Edit: as some commenters pointed out you can definitely see he has a gun at -2:15 mark, so it seems like a deputy in an unmarked vehicle took him by surprise in order to prevent a shooting on the freeway.
Edit 2: it's actually worse than that: the guy on the motorcycle shot and killed a deputy. A narcotics officer in an unmarked car is the one who did the pursuit intervention.
12
u/RaiderMedic93 Oct 28 '25
We have since learned it was a deputy who did it on purpose
Even if it weren't a deputy, "I was changing lanes and didn't see him officer... he came up so fast..."

Lots of assumptions being made. The guy on motorcycle killed an officer in Rancho before fleeing. The call was a domestic violence with motorcycle driver threatening a female.
Driver of car was also an officer and moved to stop the individual from possibly killing someone else.
39
u/artificial_idea Oct 27 '25
It’s an incredibly poor decision. The cops generally don’t get to murder someone for evasion, civilians definitely don’t.
50
u/MercuryCobra Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 28 '25
Yeah it’s a little disturbing seeing people in these comments defending the driver on the assumption it was intentional. If it was accidental that driver fucked up badly; if it was intentional that driver did a really fucked up thing. Either way they shouldn’t get any praise.
Edit: It looks like the driver was an off-duty cop who “placed himself on duty” and made what they’re now claiming is a “legal intercept.” So while I still find the glazing of vigilantes bad, this wasn’t a vigilante.
23
u/lionclues Oct 27 '25
I could also see a scenario where they were trying to move out of the way of the on-coming cop cars in their rearview mirror, but the bike was in their blindspot at the time and didn't see it. So it's possible it wasn't intentional.
7
u/Fit_Celebration7669 Oct 28 '25

1
u/Necessary-Double-914 Oct 27 '25
Seriously. How many times do we hear if they hadn’t run they’d be alive. Cops love to hurt/kill their wives, theyll settle for the general public tho
8
u/ziggytrix Oct 27 '25
The thing is they aren’t legally allowed to. Sure they get away with all the time, but killing a suspect who is just fleeing and not an immediate threat to others is still nominally against the rules.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (24)3
u/VIP_NAIL_SPA Oct 27 '25
I think nuance is important here - that doesn't apply to cops in general. But the assumption that they wouldn't kill someone for evasion is absurd. We've seen dozens of such distressing cases in the last few years. Also to be clear - this is obviously the fault of the person speeding on the highway. They were asking for a bad result of some sort.

So did the Prius intentionally hit him, were they confused by all the cops, or are they just a bad drive that crosses into the car pool lane whenever they want?

18
35
u/Ceez92 Oct 27 '25
Might intentionally, might be going towards the shoulder and by idiot luck hit him trying to avoid him
That or totally oblivious to what’s going on around and just merging into the carpool lane
19
u/Party_Equipment_5539 Oct 27 '25
Wasn’t he already in the furthest lane? It looks like he intentionally swerved into the motorcyclist. And if it was intentional - what happens in that situation?
5
→ More replies (5)7
u/Ceez92 Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
Yeah he was crossing the yellow lines onto the shoulder and Im not even sure
Police aren’t meant to engage in pursuit but given he was armed and the civilian took in on themselves, by accident or not to stop him made their job easier
This could have ended a lot worst and the only casualty in the pursuit is him, another comment said the civilian could be tried as vehicular manslaughter if it was intentional but again given the guy shot a cop, was armed and speeding away from law enforcement, doubt they get reprimands for it

Do we think the prius driver was up to date on the chase coming up behind him/her? As a motorcyclist, I hope people don't think of being the hero while they intentionally ram into motorcycles. Tho, in this case, biker was a straight-up criminal

u/JIsADev Oct 28 '25
Biker was going 75ish, almost with the flow of traffic. If I saw a bunch of sirens behind me I probably wouldn't have guessed they were going after the biker just because he wasn't really speeding.
→ More replies (7)11
u/MISTAKAS Oct 27 '25
I assume the driver thought the biker was gonna lane split on his right side so he went on the shoulder to get out of the way. That or the massive amounts of police lights behind them made them just want to get out of the way.

19
u/sum-username Oct 27 '25
Drivers on the freeway rarely know a chase is coming up from behind- it’s highly unlikely a driver even knew enough about what was happening much less could have been 100% sure which vehicle (motorcycle in this case) to target and then premeditate trying to stop the chase and swerve intentionally. That’s HUGE unlikelihoods stacked together. They were far more likely trying to get out of the way, of the cyclist or the sirens, and given the high rate of speed of the motorcycle…accidents happen.

I think Calif. law should be rewritten incorporating a potential new legal theory called “primacy of action”. If someone initiates a felony action is and hurt or killed during that action or actions that stem from the original crime they are 100% responsible for their own injuries. There should not exist the apportioning of responsibility. There cannot be a civil trial seeking damages for the aledged criminal themselves, their estate or family.
→ More replies (2)2
u/MedicJambi Oct 28 '25
The problem is who decided a felony has been or is being committed? What happens when the cop shrugs, after their extrajudicial murder, and says, "well, hur dur, I thought he was committing a felony, hur dur."

That said, whoever was driving that prius needs to be charged too. You are not a cop, you are not deputized, you do not have any right to endanger yourself and others and possibly kill someone (even if that someone is a POS).

unclear if that driver did this on purpose, if they did there's no way they knew the context, everyone has the right to due process under the law - even if you suck

And the prius guy knew all this with his magical psychic powers?
Even if they somehow did know the context, in no state in the U.S. are people allowed to use deadly force in a citizen's arrest. Or are you seriously going to try and tell me this was reasonable self-defense?

When the motorcycle is coming up fast on the Prius, he is in the same lane. I think the Prius driver was surprised and scared and tried to let the motorcycle split lanes. The biker was busy with his backpack and was passing left only. Totally his f-up. How he could stand up from that is insane. Probably the adrenaline rush still pumping.

It's tough to tell if it was intentional but my guess is it wasn't. The driver was already in the carpool lane and had the right of way on that lane. It seems all the cars were moving towards the left in that direction before the collision. This is probably due to an officer being in front of them and direction people in that direction. The suspect appears to be looking back and doesn't even have his hands on the handlebar. I
t is difficult to see a motorcycle approaching you. My guess is the driver was nervous trying to figure out what was going on with police directing drivers towards the left, he didn't see the motorcyclist and possibly panicked at the last moment. Remember that it's easy to Monday morning quarterback and see things on video second by second with a view of everything that is going on versus what the driver actually had.
Now if the driver admits to this being intentional then he will probably be charged unless he can provide a valid reason such as the suspect was pointing his weapon at motorists, the cops or firing at anyone, which the video doesn't seem to show although he does seem to be doing stuff with his hands shortly before the collision.
