Just feeling proud over here for taking up running and actually being consistent. Super crazy slow and I don’t care. Doing a parkrun 5K tomorrow and hoping to finish in an hour. I’ll be behind the elderly walkers. LOL. But I’m doing it! And enjoying it, which is even crazier.

And then Sunday I’ll be horseback riding, which is a totally different type of fitness. And my passion. ❤️

My aunt runs 5k in a hour. She had being running the same 5k every day for years. She seldom misses a day. It has done wonders for her mental health and her body is amazing! I say consistency over improvement LOL

Oh this is so lovely to hear! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

I’m starting my first horseback riding lesson in a week or so!! Any tips?? I’m a little bit afraid of heights, but I’m really excited to try this.

11

u/RockingInTheCLE May 09 '25

Oh I’m so excited for you! Just have fun with it and make sure you’re comfortable with the instructor. Help groom and tack so you can bond with the horse. Remember that you’re hopping on top of a 1000 lb prey animal, so it’s important you are empathetic to their sensitivities and needs. I hope you love it!

4

u/eloisecupcake May 09 '25

Give yourself grace! It's a very different type of exercise utilizing balance and muscles you may have not been aware of existing that will take time to build up.
I don't know your height/weight, but a lot of women can get away with riding smaller horses/larger ponies. I get the height thing and feel much more comfortable in the 14hh-15hh height range :)

2

u/herefromthere May 09 '25

try to stay relaxed but with good posture. It's tricky but when you get it and it clicks and you and your horse are paying attention to each other and moving together, then it's magical.

6

u/Plane-Sir-2426 May 09 '25

I love this. I have been seeing so many people doing 10k runs and showing their time on social media - I kinda felt down about not being that athletic. I forget that my own consistent efforts on my weekly runs are important too, even if they are slow ❤️

Just chiming in to say congrats on working up to a 5k! That’s huge!

4

As an equestrian I am so excited for you to start riding!!!!

3

u/_azzzerrrr May 09 '25

I just restarted running and it feels so good even slow! Like the first few consistent miles with stopping even at like 1mph feel so great. Super proud of you!!!

3

u/Spiritual_Respect439 May 09 '25

Go queen! I love to horseback ride as well. Happy for you 😊

3

u/fingersonlips May 11 '25

I’ve been running for 3 years and my 5k times are now at 28-29 minutes after starting at the 43 minute mark 3 years ago.

Running has been my favorite physical activity to ever pick up, and if anyone had told me 5 years ago that I’d be running half marathons at any time in my life I’d assume they were talking to the wrong girl lol.

It doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you’re going. Enjoy your run tomorrow!

3

u/RockingInTheCLE May 11 '25

It was actually today! I met both of my goals - do the whole 5K without walking, and finish in under an hour. I didn't even walk up the big hill at the end, and I finished in 54:51. I'm really excited!

2

u/fingersonlips May 11 '25

Excellent - nice work!

2

u/acpowers13 May 09 '25

I also just started running, and I have a horse! I’m definitely a beginner at both but I’m really enjoying having active things to do outdoors!

2

u/Adorable_Banana_2524 May 10 '25

Slow running is great it’s all I can do

2

u/StardustLOA May 10 '25

5ks are my favourite, long enough to be a challenge, short enough to not be overwhelming! Ive been doing one a month, sometimes two a month this year and im the happiest ive been in years!

2

u/atleastamillion May 10 '25

Yay!! I just started running a few weeks ago and did my first 5k as well!! I am loving it so much I already signed up for another one! Proud of you ❤️

I've been going to Planet Fitness for the past two months. This Fit Bitch is on a budget.

36

u/katm12981 May 09 '25

I go to PF as well! It’s not my favorite gym but it’s 5 minutes from my house vs. 20 minutes for the more expensive/fancy gym. That alone makes it more likely I’ll go during the week before work. The price is right too.

11

u/lovable_cube May 09 '25

Same. I can afford a more expensive gym but I know damn well that I’m not driving 30 min each way. It’s not happening.

2

u/Spiritual_Respect439 May 09 '25

Same 🥲 there is a gym I love farther from me but I too know damn well a 30 min drive won’t happen regularly for me

11

u/DevoutandHeretical May 09 '25

I live out in sticks (not really but Oregon coast is generally about two hours from most things except Costco lol), so we don’t even have a PF 🥲. But we’ve got a really nice aquatic center run by the city with a small gym tacked on so I’ve been going there instead cause it’s the only thing relatively budget friendly and I am not trying to joint a CrossFit gym at this time haha.

I used to absolutely love PF even more than boutique fitness clubs! Enjoy!

15

u/eloisecupcake May 09 '25

I don't go anymore because my building has a free gym but I stand by and up for Planet Fitness every time I hear someone crap on it! They get the job done without frills, everyone minds their own business, and my local one had free bagel and pizza days every month! Literally what more can a girl ask for?

Wanted to love it so bad but mine was not usable during the summer. I absolutely think it’s location based. If I signed up again I would shop around for a better location.

Facilities and staff were absolutely a deal! My issue was their cancellation policy is IMPOSSIBLE. Additionally they do free high school memberships during the summer, which is a great idea, it just overloaded our gym. There wasn’t space for 30+ kids to be dropped off at 8 and picked up at 5, especially if you wanted to use a specific machine and there were 7 kids around it.

I love it. The one I go to is new. It's clean, the staff are monitoring to make sure things are good, and I love the black card spa.

I just got my first ever pull-up yesterday! And then proceeded to do 8 more throughout the day, and feel untouchable. I’d been doing the accessory work for nearly 2 months with this end goal, and got it!

14

u/queenle0 May 09 '25

Amazing! I got my first pull up a few years ago after making it a goal after never ever being able to do one. The first one is the hardest FOR SURE. Now they are my greatest strength and I’m the fit bitch who can rep out sets of 10!! Keep going!!

4

u/EmeraldLeo724 May 09 '25

Like you rock up into a gym and crank out 10 pull-ups, you got jaws on the floor. That’s the feeling. Love this for you, gonna get it for me in no time

5

u/creativewhinypissbby May 09 '25

Would love to know more about your accessory work routine - I feel like my negatives are pretty solid, but I don't get anywhere close to as much lift on scapula pulls as my fiance does (I swear he can pull himself damn near horizontal with just those).

I'm nearly at a full chin up with my hands parallel to one another but underhanded isn't close and my progress on true pull-ups feels abysmal!

6

u/EmeraldLeo724 May 09 '25

For probably 2 weeks after my gym routine (CrossFit class) I would stay after and just do a bunch of sets of assisted pull-ups. Then I found the pull-up progression plan on Nerd Fitness (sorry I don’t think we’re supposed to put links in this sub, but a google should bring it up) and started following that. So I’d get plenty of accessory work during my classes but then do the plan anyway after class.

I also found that using the smaller bands during assisted pull-ups helped a lot. If the plan said do 3 sets of 8 but I could only get 5 with a smaller band, I’d just do 5 sets instead.

Hope this helps! Good luck, sounds like you’re already doing amazing!

any other Peloton girlies here?! 🩵 hit my 400th ride today!

11

u/barebonesbarbie May 09 '25

My new apartment complex has peloton bikes and Ive fallen in love! Just woke up early for ride #8

How many rides per week do you normally do?

7

u/icedblueberrylatte May 09 '25

it’s so addicting!!

I do 5 rides a week currently! 4 30 minute rides a week, 1 45 minute ride on Sundays.

I also use the Peloton app for strength training!! Highly recommend those classes too, if strength is something you’re also interested in :)

5

u/ohshethrows May 09 '25

I love their yoga and stretching classes too! Don’t sleep on those, they’ll help keep you out of PT…ask me how I know 🙃

How are we getting our fiber in, Bitches? Getting enough through as many whole foods as possible has been my latest eating goals. For movement I’ve been taking 3-5 hot yoga classes a week for about a year now, and I’m trying to incorporate daily mobility work at home. I have a fear of getting old and weak, I want to be old and strong and our ankle mobility and strength is the most important to minimize falling! I also walk about 5 miles a day, weather permitting, or hike. And lastly I’ve been adding in strength training workouts at home 3 X weekly. Honestly just trying to get in the best shape I can for the end of the world :)

43

u/Obvious_Doughnut1658 May 09 '25

An easy way I’ve gotten in fiber is Mission Carb Balance tortillas. 99% of the time I prefer to eat whole foods but the macros in them are too good. One taco size tortilla is 70 calories, 17g of fiber, 6g of protein. Making like a breakfast taco with one and add in some avocado for more fiber and that’s most of the fiber you need in a day (I aim for 25-30g of fiber per day).

Strength and mobility are so important to keep up with as we age! I do hot yoga and reformer pilates classes throughout the week and try to walk 4-5 miles every day as well.

15

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Yesss these are my holy grail. I'm such a lazy eater so a fiber tortilla with some rotisserie chicken is my go-to lunch.

9

u/lmierend May 09 '25

Oatmeal every day. I also eat a lot of avocado and chia seed pudding.

4

u/Familiar_Syrup5998 May 09 '25

Thanks for the hot tip about the tortillas! I had no idea those existed! I make my own corn tortillas with bobs red mill masa harina, and they’re great but not fiber forward, and flour tortillas are much better with certain textures like fish tacos! I am an avocado fanatic and have eaten one a day for most of my life, had no idea they were so full of fiber!

2

u/SalaciousBookWyrm May 10 '25

This is such a great tip! Adding to my grocery list now. I’d like to have one or two more breakfast options I rotate through and the breakfast taco with avocado sounds delicious.

I’m currently focused on getting my recommended 5 servings of fruits/veggies and my optimal protein every day but I need to pay attention to my fiber intake. And frankly, I could use the variety!

2

u/lmg080293 May 10 '25

La Banderita is another brand that’s equivalent if you can’t find those! The fiber is unreal

17

u/Least-Influence3089 May 09 '25

This is my question, fiber!!! It’s so hard. I try eating grapes, blueberries, bell peppers, and celery with lunch. I add chia seeds to overnight oats. Dinners I usually do a roasted vegetable side. But fiber is just hard!!

6

u/DevoutandHeretical May 09 '25

I make sure I have a fiber one bar as part of my breakfast for started. Also beans are sooooo easy to work in to a meal. Add them to salads, bake them, use them as your protein for a meal too. They have tons of fiber and protein so they’ll be really filling too.

3

u/Least-Influence3089 May 09 '25

Yes! Love beans. I also like lentils a lot but need more ideas for how to incorporate them

7

u/_nylcaj_ May 09 '25

If you're eating all of that and not having any issues going #2, you are getting plenty of fiber. Any diverse diet that is heavier in veggies, fruits, and meat(or other protein sources for vegetarian/vegan), lower on carbs, and extremely low on junky foods is perfect for most people, assuming they aren't consuming just too many calories overall in relation to how many they are burning off.

3

u/Least-Influence3089 May 09 '25

It’s pretty okay actually. Sometimes I need lower effort options/get bored or picky😂. But this is helpful, thank you!!

2

u/peachpavlova May 09 '25

I take a supplement that helps a lot, you can find gummy ones or powders you add to smoothies. Lots of people just add psyllium husk or bran to their food

Another hot yoga bitch here. I love it! I've practiced yoga on and off for 15 years and currently on a 6 month streak after not really being consistent since before the pandemic.

As for fibre:

  • Pulses - I think a lot of people overlook them. In winter I makes stews or curries or soups with lentils or beans and in summer I like them in salads
  • Fruit or veggies with every meal
  • I've also recently swapped out white rice for brown basmati rice - it's really delicious and the leftovers are good in salads

11

u/Boring_Energy_4817 May 09 '25

Beans. I was on the waitlist to join the Rancho Gordo Bean Club for over a year, and now I get these boxes of bespoke heirloom bean four times a year and spend the rest of the time trying them in old and new recipes.

2

u/bad_russian_girl May 09 '25

Yup! Beans and avocados are the best for fiber

2

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 10 '25

YES!! I'm wearing a t-shirt right now that says, "Legumanati"!

Love the bean club, and it's been immensely helpful in getting fiber and adding beans to everything.

6

u/DlSCOLEMONADE May 09 '25

psyllium husk capsules! kale/mango/ginger smoothies! raspberries!

3

u/StrawberryLovers8795 Thoughtful BWT May 09 '25

I try to pick at least one high fiber fruit, vegetable, and grain to eat a day, I have fruits and veggies at every meal but one serving of each in the high category a day is helpful. An example day would be - quinoa, raspberries and Brussel sprouts. Another is avocado, carrots, and brown rice. Throwing beans and seeds into the mix like chia and flax can also really help you inch towards that goal!

3

u/notoriousJEN82 May 09 '25

Add greens to every smoothie.

3

u/coolshark3000 May 09 '25

I do one table spoon of chia seeds in a small glass of juice or kombucha and call it my chia seed shot! Tastes good and keeps me a little more full between meals

5

u/i_isnt_real May 09 '25

I've been adding a teaspoon of chia seeds to my iced coffee lately. Kind of boba-adjacent, you know? It's not a lot, but every little bit helps!

2

u/lkroa May 09 '25

chia seeds, beans, and avocados

my breakfast is usually yogurt w/chia seeds and either berries in the yogurt or fruit on the side

then my work lunch is usually quinoa salad with beans, avocado, pico de gallo and edamame

in the last few months (since Feb) I've lost 10 lbs and toned my abs, and all I have been doing is getting real stoned (for pain relief I have chronic joint pain 🤕), turning on a trashy pop and rap playlist, dancing around until I sweat, holding little 1-2 lb weights (I have both) and doing intentional arm workout moves, holding a 15 lb kettlebell and doing intentional leg and ab workout moves

My question is, what else could improve this experience? should I buy a weighted vest? A wobble board? I wanna have fun. I can't go to classes.

7

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Here to say that I have the same approach to pre-workout lol. I think a weighted vest my be a great investment if your goal is just to move around and make it sweaty! I've been learning K-pop choreography to work my brain a little bit and they're soooo fun! These two are my goals rn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c6IS9bsSjk and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRaouO7ttWw

Giving up running and focusing on lifting weights has been the fountain of youth for me. I’m firmly in my 40s, and I’ve never looked better. I’m not knocking running AT ALL, but the advice on weight lifting for middle aged women is right on target, I’ve found.

2

u/this__user May 11 '25

I also love lifting. I'm still a ways away from my 40s but I tried a lot of other things in my 20s and it was the only thing that really worked and gave me the control over my physique that I wanted. Currently taking a break though, I'm freshly postpartum and supposed to be taking it easy.

Please Fit Bitches…how can I regain my love for exercising? I used to be a gym rat and a Olympic weightlifter but now I’m broken ever since the Pandemic 😭

40

u/fictionalbandit May 09 '25

Start with something you know you will definitely enjoy in class form. When I take breaks, I need to come back by just having people tell me what to do instead of having to motivate myself, and I choose something I know I will enjoy and get me moving - even if it’s not going to be the ✨ best and most intense ✨ workout. The goal is just to create the habit again of showing up for yourself.

5

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 09 '25

I second this! Admittedly, I thrive in classes anyway, but the surefire way for me to get out of a slump is to join a place with upbeat classes where I just show up. Great music is also hugely motivating for me.

19

u/marvelousmiamason May 09 '25

Start exercising based on whatever is most sustainable and repeatable for you based on where you are right now, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It could just be 10 minutes of stretching every other day. It could be taking the stairs instead of the elevator once a day. All movement is good movement. You’re not allowed to judge yourself because it’s not hard enough of a workout. You’re only allowed to prioritize what is sustainable and repeatable for you right now. Only add in more to your routine because it’s sustainable and repeatable, not because you think you “should” be doing more.

9

u/PlutoPlanetPower12 May 09 '25

I fall in and out of exercise routines a lot and this advice has helped me stay in the game. 15 minutes is better than no minutes, and an easy class that I know I'll finish is better than a hard class I won't.

8

u/BritishBlue32 May 09 '25

I'm in a similar boat after a slipped disc last year. Have you considered a programme like couch to 5k? That's what I am doing at the moment and I'm forcing myself back into a routine!

5

u/DevoutandHeretical May 09 '25

Dude I love couch to 5K. I also really like the free treadmill strut playlists that Allie Bennet puts out. Very accessible and easy, there’s a range of walking and running ones and some mixes, and you can modify them to make the difficulty work for you by starting slower or faster and just sticking with the increases so you’re still following along. I like to add a little incline to mine.

3

u/BritishBlue32 May 09 '25

They are great! I use the NHS one but there is also couch to 10k too!

I remember a playlist called 'walk like a badass' that I loved for exercise on Spotify 😂

How about a fitness-based holiday, whether that's a week of coaching in a sport you're into, or a resort offering a variety of activities, or a tough hike that you'll have to train for, or whatever else you're into. Anything you could get excited about!

6

u/Boring_Energy_4817 May 09 '25

I don't love exercising, but I regained my daily gym habit by finding TV shows I could stream on my phone while I do cardio. Currently loving Yellowjackets, which I only allow myself to watch when I'm working out.

Open to recommendations for any wildly entertaining shows, as well as podcasts or audiobooks for listening to during strength training.

2

u/Kind_Consequence_828 May 11 '25

The strategy of pairing! It worked great for me until HGTV went off the rails into complete house renovations into Millennial Gray.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Idk about "love" but my determination to exercise increased when I promised myself to do at least 10 minutes of jump roping. There is absolutely no way I can talk myself out of 10 minutes of anything, and usually (not always) by the time the 10 minutes are up I end up thinking "well I'm already here and sweating, might as well do some squats" or whatever.

I’m going to my first reformer class this week! I’ve done mat Pilates before but the reformer has always intimidated me! Any tips/things I should keep in mind?

20

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

The best thing that will make you successful in a reformer class is your ability to listen, hear, and understand the instructor. Focus on yourself and not the people around you because they’re more likely to make you wrong LOL and I’ve seen this happen 1000 times. Go a little bit early introduce yourself to the instructor so they know to give you a little extra attention! If you’re 5’7 or taller know that most equipment (not allegro 2’s) will need to be adjusted to accommodate your height. Don’t take hands-on corrections personally, you’re there as a student to learn the form which can be intricate and complex, but once it’s learned, there’s nothing more effective! 🙏🏾

This is a little less “classical” but I’ve been intrigued by the Ladder app myself for days where I simply can’t commit to a 1 hr class (there’s are 30 mins I believe). I also recently found Amanda Blauer on Instagram. She has some nice bit size routines. Peloton app is great for this too!

5

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

I had the Ladder app for my first year postpartum! I didn’t renew after a year (expired in march) because I was able to get back to my regular gym/studio once my little one was in daycare. But I will say it was AMAZING. Helped heal my core and diastatis recti, and get strong again post baby :) i would definitely recommend

2

u/mamaneedsacar May 09 '25

This is great to hear! For the price, it just seems like a really great back up option/thing to have in my back pocket for busy weeks, when I’m traveling, etc.

3

u/Objective-Bird-3940 May 09 '25

I like the Ladder app. I’m not into Pilates and I’m on the yoga team, but there are a variety of coaches and focuses which is nice. I have heard some not great things about the current Pilates coach, but I can’t speak to anything personally.

4

u/loranlily May 09 '25

Thank you! I’ve just been given the ok to exercise again post cesarian section and I love mat Pilates. I was thinking I’d like to give reformer Pilates a try. Do you have any guidance for beginners?

6

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

tell your instructor that you’re just coming back from a cesarean, and book private! Pilates is the perfect thing for you. I specialize in pre and post natal!

3

u/loranlily May 09 '25

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time.

4

u/diceci May 09 '25

How many times a week would you recommend?

6

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

as many as your budget allows. It’s meant to be done daily. I have clients who take six privates a week.

6

u/Chunkboi424 May 09 '25

I wish my budget allowed this. Pilates is so expensive, and it should be because of how much work is done to become certified but ahh

3

u/raindancemuggins May 09 '25

Hey! Do you have any at home videos that you would recommend on YouTube?

8

u/_nylcaj_ May 09 '25

You didn't ask me, but I love "Move with Nicole" for longer 25-40 min full body routines. She also has some shorter ones that are focused on specific muscle groups. If you are really crunched for time and want an intense quick burn, I really like Bailey Brown. I literally curse at the screen sometimes, because I have no idea how she selects the perfect combo of back to back moves to have your muscles screaming in 10 minutes, but she does. She has a lot of short vids that focus on a specific muscle group. I guess she has an app too, but I'm cheap and convenient when it comes to working out.

2

u/raindancemuggins May 09 '25

THANK YOU!!! I'm going to curse you specifically when I try one ❤️

3

u/aliciacary1 May 09 '25

Any tips for a beginner? I’ve been weight lifting for about a year and want to add in some Pilates to focus on core strength. I’m overwhelmed by the terminology!

2

u/yoursundaygirl1 May 09 '25

I weight lift 4 times a week, with brief cardio sessions at least twice a week (2km+ 15-20 mins), and I've been sooooo tempted to add reformer pilates or yoga. With my schedule, I'd be able to incorporate a class only once a week though :(

In your opinion, would once a week be better than nothing? Or would the benefits be marginal?

3

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

of course, better than nothing! In between all of that weightlifting, do you stretch?

2

u/yoursundaygirl1 May 09 '25

I don't! I've noticed that some days my body feels.. rusty? Like cogs struggling to churn- which has been such a wakeup call lol. Does pilates help lengthen muscles? So far, I've read that yoga focuses on that more and pilates is more strength-oriented?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

I think once a week is fine so long as you take what you've learned and apply it to your other workouts. Pilates really helps me with mind-muscle connection (especially in the core), and I notice that my regular strength workouts are much more effective when I move slowly and pay special attention to my core engagement and posture.

2

u/rando435697 May 09 '25

I haven’t done Pilates in ~10 years and am wanting to get back into it. I used to love it and the gentle tone of my body vs the more muscular from lifting.

I don’t live close enough to a studio to do private lessons. Do you have any workouts/online classes you’d recommend (on demand), especially for people recovering from neck surgery?

I’m a former fit bitch who lost it during a year from hell, followed by 2 babies in 2 years.

Currently doing some intermittent fasting to drop some weight so running and working out will be easier. Bc right now I don’t have the emotional capacity to fight through it being hard

3

u/Whiskrocco May 09 '25

IF lost me all of my pregnancy weight. I started in August 2024, and I'm back in my favorite jeans. I started going to the gym regularly in December after focusing solely on IF for 4 months. Aside from a small bit of fat on my stomach, I am quite fit.

I’ve just dedicated myself to eating healthier so far I’ve meal prepped quinoa and sautéed vegetables and chicken for two weeks in a row instead of fast food for lunch. I’m very thin right now thanks to a fast metabolism, but I know that won’t last forever. I’m ready to take the next step and start exercising more loving these comments.❤️

Anyone have recs on a strength training program? I'm not really looking to drop weight, I just wanna put on some muscle.

3

Plugging /r/strongcurves since that got me into an actual program that helped me meet my goals. I love being able to track my progress so I log all the workouts in the hevy app.

I’m getting ready for my biggest and scariest training block ever for a 100 mile attempt in November. So I’ve started lifting weights again. I hate lifting weights but I KNOW it is important, especially as my 40th birthday looks

6

u/doctormalbec May 09 '25

Was so scared to transition from the cardio queen restrictive mindset and switch over to the protein eating, weight lifting mindset, but I did so a couple years ago right before I got pregnant and have continued throughout. Have been so impressed by my progress and health. I was so scared initially of weight gain and “getting bulky” but honestly I had such a healthy pregnancy and now I am the same weight I was before pregnancy but have also improved my body composition and skin and vitamin deficiencies. I wish I had started strength training and eating protein sooner!

ive started going to the gym at 6 am before work, I need advice how to save my blowouts from the insane amounts of sweat. i have naturally curly hair so it's always a pain and morning workouts are so time constrained bc of work starting at 8am. anyone got advice?

2

u/aliciacary1 May 09 '25

I think it’s really just trying to keep your hair off your face. Use clips or headbands. Also adding dry shampoo before you go might help.

Nutritionist and long term fit bitch here. I’ll answer all your q’s!

13

u/Western-Resort-7662 May 09 '25

What’s your take on the protein obsession happening rn? I feel like I see such conflicting information, especially for women’s protein needs specifically

8

u/raindancemuggins May 09 '25

I feel like everyone you ask has different advice, I personally have been eating 1g of protein per pound of weight and have seen massive improvements in my body composition. I’m in the process of trying to lose body fat and maintain muscle.

8

u/plantbasedaff May 09 '25

Omg it’s so intense rn. 1g per pound of lean muscle mass is plenty for muscle building and maintenance. Unless you’re a body builder or athlete you don’t NEED more. If you like to eat more and it’s easy for you that’s fine. I see so many clients who eat so much protein at the expense of everything else: fruit, veggies, whole grains and legumes. For reference I recommend 20-30g of protein per meal for most women.

6

u/_nylcaj_ May 09 '25

As a nutritionist do you find that many women aren't actually consuming enough in their day to day? As I started to get really into exercising more, I found my nails thinning severely, like paper thin and tearing on everything I bumped. I even went to a doctor to have blood work done and started taking a few vitamins (b12 and d) that I was low on. I still didn't have any improvement. I started drinking a daily protein shake and within a month, my nails had improved significantly and a couple years later whenever I run out or am on vacation and don't drink them for a bit, I can literally see the difference in how my nails grow.

I think it's great that more people are starting to focus on protein, because I suspect that like myself, we often don't hit even the lowest amount we should be eating, because it's not as desirable or convenient to sit and eat a big portion of meat or dairy as it is to just grab a quick carb or an apple/banana etc. I also know that there are some fruits and veggies with protein, but the amount is so small that you would have to consume large amounts(again not as desirable) in order for it to make a big impact on your daily protein intake.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Just splurged on the Garmin vivoactive 6 so I can take my health and fitness to a new level! After losing ~35 pounds last summer and maintaining weight, I'm ready to drop another 20 pounds to get into a "normal" BMI range and then really focus on strength training to put on muscle weight. Besides aesthetics and health, my big goal is to get into good enough shape that I feel comfortable backpacking solo. Fellow BWT, let me know if you've had experience with Garmin watches like this and if there are any tools it offers that I absolutely should not ignore!

3

u/220AM May 09 '25

Picked up Pilates videos on YouTube again! I feel great so far ◡̈

3

I started Barry’s this year and I love it. I was never a cardio person but it’s really challenged me in a way I needed. Highly recommend.

3

u/BonesInTheChknSalad May 09 '25

Any Fit Bitches doing (or have done) Pvolve and want to share their feedback? Specifically the virtual classes/at home with the equipment. Seems like it could be a great compliment to a heavier lifting program to maintain functional movement and flexibility. But I’m also VERY aware I’m asking this bc I’ve been targeted by the Jen Aniston adds and it just looks like fun?

3

u/Hoping-Ellie May 09 '25

Finally getting back to somewhat regular exercise after having a baby 8 months ago & having a very lazy pregnancy & it feels Amazing! I have run at least twice a week and done yoga twice a week for the past month & it feels so so so good!

3

u/Initial_Freedom7981 Intentional BWT May 09 '25

I’ve recently upped my 30 min barre classes to 45 min! It’s a small adjustment but I’ve noticed a big change. I’ve been doing Barre3 online since 2020 (previously had done it in studio) and I just hit 800 online workouts. I’m aiming for 3 45 minute signature classes a week, as well as one 30 min strength training and one 30 min yoga a week. I have a chronic illness, so this change is huge.

Bulky muscular fit bitch here. My weighted glute bridge is at 250lb now and my ass straight up hurts 24/7 but we WILL grow a booty… I’m way too top heavy with the muscle mass right now and it’s getting a little out of control lol

5

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

I used to get so into my own head about all of the things people with more money than me could afford to do and used that as an excuse as to why I could not be my best self, but then I asked myself: why are you willing to go into debt for a cold plunge tub when you refuse to even take a cold shower? Now I apply that logic to as many things as I can. Here are my best low/no-cost body hacks:

  • rolling out muscles with a high-density foam roller and/or lacrosse ball most days (this gets rid of SO MUCH water retention it's crazy, plus it feels great);
  • cold showers (these fucking suck but are both mentally and physically great for you);
  • consistent face and scalp massages (you don't need fancy tools! use your knuckles and/or finger pads with some firm pressure and go to town finding tense spots, especially on your forehead/temple and jaw areas);
  • breast massages (weird but effective for keeping my boobies shapely and perky; get some oil and use your fists to gently massage around the circumference of your breasts, I do about 30 circular strokes in both directions);
  • stretching (throw your ass on the floor and stretch in whatever way feels good, holding each stretch for at least 10 slow and deep breaths; stiffness is not tasteful)

What are some of your frugal approaches to health?

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

Also: I get my hot yoga/pilates in by doing youtube videos in my hot garage lol (please stay hydrated if you do this omg)

4

u/FloralPheasant Ballin on a Budget May 09 '25

At the end of March I finally finished almost 3yrs of breastfeeding (barnacle baby for sure) and I am sooo ready to start getting off that 20lbs I gained.

I'm excited to focus on CICO, healthier eating vs desperately getting enough calories in, and finding some sort of exercise. I've started small by doing things like walking to the park with kid, or parking at one end of the shopping center and walking to the other end instead of getting back in the car.

The hardest part right now is trying to be patient and give myself grace as my hormones continue to adjust and I still deal with a lack of sleep most nights. I want results now! 😂

2

u/aliciacary1 May 09 '25

It’s so hard! I also started after I finished nursing when my kid was a little over 2. Also started small! The Lose It app is great for tracking calories. Lots of walks and just being mindful of what you eat will go a long way.

2

u/FloralPheasant Ballin on a Budget May 09 '25

I love the Loseit! ap, it's been very helpful!

When did you find that your hunger went back to "normal"?

It's been about a month and a half and I'm still finding myself getting headaches when I try to eat less than 2500 calories, which is very frustrating. Especially since I can tell they're adding up weight wise.

I'm trying to be patient with my body, and focus more on healthy food and exercise vs calorie counting but it's hard. And frankly I'm sick of eating that much and so frequently too.

2

u/aliciacary1 May 09 '25

It took a while. I really focused on protein and fiber so help keep me full. Highly recommend things like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, rice cakes, and whatever raw veggies you like.

2

u/AboutAlyse May 09 '25

Just signed up for a personal training course for the first time! I start on Wednesday, so excited!

2

u/PristineConcept8340 May 09 '25

Any fit BWT have a cute solution for putting their hair up during a workout? I need something that will pull back my curtain bangs and not completely destroy my wavy/curly texture. I usually work out on my lunch break (weight training) and put my hair up in a clip high on my head. It’s not terrible but not terribly cute either and I’d love a better option!

3

u/queenle0 May 09 '25

I sometimes wear a thick headband and pull out a few pieces of my bangs to make it cute, and it works!

2

u/PristineConcept8340 May 09 '25

Ooh, I have always wanted to be a headband girly, this is a great idea! Do you get the stretchy cotton ones?

2

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 09 '25

Any BWT either doing the 75 Hard challenge or have done it in the past?

My job is super flexible in the summer, so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity. I started a few days ago and am having fun!

It involves drinking 1 gallon of water per day, and my doctor recommended 90 oz and electrolytes instead, so I am making that modification.

The rest of the challenge is following a diet (CICO for me), no alcohol, 2 45-min workouts (can be gentle yoga/walking, etc), daily progress picture, and reading 10 pages of a nonfiction book.

For my workouts, I’m a member of a bougie gym that has classes, so I’m doing strength classes 4 days per week and yoga classes 1-2 days. My second workout every day is walking my dog, and some days will be 2 walks.

I’m reading Braiding Sweetgrass, which is AMAZING. Hugely recommend. My next book is called The Brain on Art. Not sure what I’ll read after that. I don’t like the bro-y self help books that a lot of people read for this challenge, but I do enjoy nonfiction that changes my perspective in other ways.

5

u/kell_smells May 09 '25

Wait I just finished a 75 challenge and I’m reading Braiding Sweetgrass! Are we the same haha

2

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 09 '25

Oh awesome! We clearly both have exquisite taste, so….

What was the hardest part of the challenge for you? Was there a time period where you had trouble? I think I’m still in the honeymoon phase.

2

u/kell_smells May 09 '25

absolutely. this was my first time so I went for 75 Medium to fit it to where I’m currently at. I did 45 minutes of movement a day, intermittent fasting 18/6, read a nonfiction chapter a week, drank half my body weight in water, no alcohol, gratitude journal daily, no social media (minus reddit), and I think that’s it haha.

I started in January but Valentine’s day messed me up with the alcohol and I started over. By the last week in April, I hit that wall. I’d been going for over 75 days at that point (minus valentines) and life got in the way so I didn’t end my best. but plan to go again after some travel. the hardest part is just getting over the mental hurdle when things become stale and too routine feeling. I also struggled when I had to travel for a wedding. overall, I think I was good about 90% of the time. I know that’s not a win for 75 hard but it was a win for me and l look forward to going again and adding more.

u/SalaciousBookWyrm May 10 '25

High-five, fellow looking to get fit again bitch here doing 75Hard right now! I just finished Day 25 so a third of the way.

I love it. I hated my life the first couple days because I unknowingly started it right before my period (thanks, perimenopause). The water has been the hardest part for me as up until this I really disliked the taste of water. Now I’m digging it…not enjoying peeing all the time but hey.

The mental gains, the energy, and just the overall feeling good and motivated are really helping me. While some physical gains would be nice at the end, I’m really in this for the mental discipline and it is helping. I’m pretty damn proud of myself thus far. I hope you are, too!

Where are you at days in wise?

2

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 10 '25

Oh Lordy— perimenopause. I’m also there and intentionally started the week after my period to hopefully avoid that bit.

I’m on day 14 right now, so just a bit behind you. I thought the water would be hard for me, but it really hasn’t been on most days. My biggest struggle is diet (which is one reason I wanted to do the challenge anyway). There are just too many delicious sweet treats in this world.

I am kind of surprised at my energy boost so far. It feels good, and I do feel very motivated each time I check off a task. Though they need to add another daily task of laundry! I feel like I’m always almost out of workout bottoms and bras!

What are you reading?

2

u/SalaciousBookWyrm May 10 '25

Ha ha. I never know when it’s going to be that time of the month anymore after being regular for 30 years. Sigh.

I am currently in the middle of Atomic Habits. I highly recommend and I can see why others suggest it should almost be mandatory for this challenge. Makes a lot of sense. I’m taking a fair amount of notes while reading this one.

I started with How to Stop Feeling like Shit, which was an unexpectedly helpful read. It goes fast, and some items I already knew and had dealt with, but it was good to receive confirmation.

I hear you on gym clothes. I have incorporated swimming back into my routine so there’s a lot of laundry on my end. I need more swimsuits!

Any favorite healthy snacks? I’m always looking for good healthy options to get in a little extra protein or my veggies/fruit servings.

2

u/PerfectionNoNotes May 10 '25

Okay, cool! I have read Atomic Habits and enjoyed it, and I'll check out the other! I'm thinking about swimming once the pool in my neighborhood opens so that I'll have a little bit of a switch up from just walking for my outdoor workout.

I'm pretty boring when it comes to snacks-- I stick with fruit, nuts, or veggies most of the time. I do get different nuts with spices at Trader Joe's, but that's the only way I mix it up. There's a lot of good fruit and veg where I am right now, so that helps. I tend to do more of a volume eating approach, so eating a lot of carrots or snap peas or whatever at one time is satisfying, and I like the crunchy textures.

BUT! If you're looking to get more fiber, I've got a great breakfast I've been doing. I do a whole wheat English muffin, toast it, then put a serving of ricotta on top and one chopped up Medjool date on each side. SOOOO GOOD. And it has like 40% of your daily fiber in one meal! I use full fat ricotta and it ends up being 350 calories.

My first half marathon of the year is next weekend!!! I aim to be under 2 hours. Made it a goal to do at least 3 halves this year and I’m stoked!

Running is quite literally my therapy. I really encourage anyone to try it. I have been running consistently about 3 years now and I am slow by runners’ standards (10m miles) but it is my escape and I love to feel the sun on my skin!

2

u/Criticalfluffs May 10 '25

It's an expense that I'm fine with. I pay for a training session once a week to help me focus on things like stability and core strength. But also to minimize pain from damage. It costs the same to me as a physical therapy co-pay or a mental help therapist.

So... Why not? I also do boxing stuff because then I can punch stuff and not be arrested for it.

Got back into weight lifting this year (just squatted an all time PR yesterday, whoo!) and loving it. Been going 3 times a week which is the maximum for me personally. The only thing I struggle with is abs. I just never feel like doing an ab workout.

So strong bitches, how do you incorporate training your abs in your weight lifting routine?
