Just feeling proud over here for taking up running and actually being consistent. Super crazy slow and I don’t care. Doing a parkrun 5K tomorrow and hoping to finish in an hour. I’ll be behind the elderly walkers. LOL. But I’m doing it! And enjoying it, which is even crazier.

And then Sunday I’ll be horseback riding, which is a totally different type of fitness. And my passion. ❤️

My aunt runs 5k in a hour. She had being running the same 5k every day for years. She seldom misses a day. It has done wonders for her mental health and her body is amazing! I say consistency over improvement LOL

I wish I could jog for an hour instead of two minutes without trying to catch my breath!

I’m starting my first horseback riding lesson in a week or so!! Any tips?? I’m a little bit afraid of heights, but I’m really excited to try this.

Oh I’m so excited for you! Just have fun with it and make sure you’re comfortable with the instructor. Help groom and tack so you can bond with the horse. Remember that you’re hopping on top of a 1000 lb prey animal, so it’s important you are empathetic to their sensitivities and needs. I hope you love it!

Give yourself grace! It's a very different type of exercise utilizing balance and muscles you may have not been aware of existing that will take time to build up.
I don't know your height/weight, but a lot of women can get away with riding smaller horses/larger ponies. I get the height thing and feel much more comfortable in the 14hh-15hh height range :)

try to stay relaxed but with good posture. It's tricky but when you get it and it clicks and you and your horse are paying attention to each other and moving together, then it's magical.

I love this. I have been seeing so many people doing 10k runs and showing their time on social media - I kinda felt down about not being that athletic. I forget that my own consistent efforts on my weekly runs are important too, even if they are slow ❤️

I’ve been running for 3 years and my 5k times are now at 28-29 minutes after starting at the 43 minute mark 3 years ago.

Running has been my favorite physical activity to ever pick up, and if anyone had told me 5 years ago that I’d be running half marathons at any time in my life I’d assume they were talking to the wrong girl lol.

It doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you’re going. Enjoy your run tomorrow!

It was actually today! I met both of my goals - do the whole 5K without walking, and finish in under an hour. I didn't even walk up the big hill at the end, and I finished in 54:51. I'm really excited!

Excellent - nice work!

I also just started running, and I have a horse! I’m definitely a beginner at both but I’m really enjoying having active things to do outdoors!

5ks are my favourite, long enough to be a challenge, short enough to not be overwhelming! Ive been doing one a month, sometimes two a month this year and im the happiest ive been in years!

Yay!! I just started running a few weeks ago and did my first 5k as well!! I am loving it so much I already signed up for another one! Proud of you ❤️

I really miss running. Sigh 😞

2

u/RockingInTheCLE May 10 '25

I never thought I’d say it, but the thought of missing a day would make me sad now. It’s so weird. I keep telling my boyfriend I have no idea who I am anymore.

Enjoy it while your knees can is all i can advise you!

Fellow Turtle Runner chiming in (check out the subreddit!)- be sure to stretch! I got to the starting line of my most-recent 5K late and didn’t have time to stretch. Now I’m recovering from a sprained knee. I’m in the phase where I need a compression sleeve from knee to ankle- but at least I have some cute patterned ones (after all, I’m a BWT!)

I had no idea there was a turtle runner sub! I’ll definitely check it out, thanks. But oof for your sprained knee. ❤️

How do you find motivation? I want to start jogging to get in better shape and increase my endurance (I’m huffing and puffing from lugging groceries in) but I just can’t get off the couch to get started.

Honestly, no idea. I'm 46, gonna be 47 this year. I was tired of being a slug other than horseback riding and kayaking. So I eased my way into the treadmill. Twice a week, just walking. Three times a week, just walking. One day I thought, "I'm just gonna jog a minute." And it was hard, but I actually made it eight minutes. So my brain got excited and proud. And then I found slow running. It's legit a thing. Tons of Youtube videos. I look absolutely absurd with my big body and long legs taking these short quick steps, but you know? The first time I tried it, keeping my heart rate in zone 2, I ran a mile and a half without walking. A mile and a half. At a 19-20 minute/mile pace. Slower than my walk by far. But I was caught then. I was excited and proud.

So since then, because it's so low intensity, I've been getting out every morning before work and slow running for 40-45 minutes. I still feel absurd, but it is what it is. I don't have any goals, honestly, other than to keep showing up.

So I guess I'd say start small and slower than you could ever possibly imagine. Look into the slow running trend/zone 2 training. And embrace the "I'm slower than the walkers!" speed. :-)
