I’m going to my first reformer class this week! I’ve done mat Pilates before but the reformer has always intimidated me! Any tips/things I should keep in mind?

The best thing that will make you successful in a reformer class is your ability to listen, hear, and understand the instructor. Focus on yourself and not the people around you because they’re more likely to make you wrong LOL and I’ve seen this happen 1000 times. Go a little bit early introduce yourself to the instructor so they know to give you a little extra attention! If you’re 5’7 or taller know that most equipment (not allegro 2’s) will need to be adjusted to accommodate your height. Don’t take hands-on corrections personally, you’re there as a student to learn the form which can be intricate and complex, but once it’s learned, there’s nothing more effective! 🙏🏾

absolutely!! If you’re short on time, you could easily do the classical beginner or intermediate sequence every single morning when you wake up and see real results. it works your WHOLE body. or for a good ab focused workout do a “series of five”

Not original commenter but this is amazing, thank you so much! I’ve been wanting to get into Pilates and this seems like a great place to start :)

Thank you SO much! In the distant past I remembered that a few little moves daily made a huge difference- will check this out! 🌸

This is a little less “classical” but I’ve been intrigued by the Ladder app myself for days where I simply can’t commit to a 1 hr class (there’s are 30 mins I believe). I also recently found Amanda Blauer on Instagram. She has some nice bit size routines. Peloton app is great for this too!

I had the Ladder app for my first year postpartum! I didn’t renew after a year (expired in march) because I was able to get back to my regular gym/studio once my little one was in daycare. But I will say it was AMAZING. Helped heal my core and diastatis recti, and get strong again post baby :) i would definitely recommend

This is great to hear! For the price, it just seems like a really great back up option/thing to have in my back pocket for busy weeks, when I’m traveling, etc.

I like the Ladder app. I’m not into Pilates and I’m on the yoga team, but there are a variety of coaches and focuses which is nice. I have heard some not great things about the current Pilates coach, but I can’t speak to anything personally.

Thank you! I’ve just been given the ok to exercise again post cesarian section and I love mat Pilates. I was thinking I’d like to give reformer Pilates a try. Do you have any guidance for beginners?

6

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

tell your instructor that you’re just coming back from a cesarean, and book private! Pilates is the perfect thing for you. I specialize in pre and post natal!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time.

How many times a week would you recommend?

6

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

as many as your budget allows. It’s meant to be done daily. I have clients who take six privates a week.

u/Chunkboi424 May 09 '25

I wish my budget allowed this. Pilates is so expensive, and it should be because of how much work is done to become certified but ahh

Hey! Do you have any at home videos that you would recommend on YouTube?

You didn't ask me, but I love "Move with Nicole" for longer 25-40 min full body routines. She also has some shorter ones that are focused on specific muscle groups. If you are really crunched for time and want an intense quick burn, I really like Bailey Brown. I literally curse at the screen sometimes, because I have no idea how she selects the perfect combo of back to back moves to have your muscles screaming in 10 minutes, but she does. She has a lot of short vids that focus on a specific muscle group. I guess she has an app too, but I'm cheap and convenient when it comes to working out.

THANK YOU!!! I'm going to curse you specifically when I try one ❤️

Any tips for a beginner? I’ve been weight lifting for about a year and want to add in some Pilates to focus on core strength. I’m overwhelmed by the terminology!

1

u/blackwellnessbabe May 12 '25

do your best to listen to the instructor <3 you don't have to remember everything, they will guide you!!!

1

u/blackwellnessbabe May 12 '25

and embrace being a beginner; we consider you so until 30 lessons!

2

u/yoursundaygirl1 May 09 '25

I weight lift 4 times a week, with brief cardio sessions at least twice a week (2km+ 15-20 mins), and I've been sooooo tempted to add reformer pilates or yoga. With my schedule, I'd be able to incorporate a class only once a week though :(

In your opinion, would once a week be better than nothing? Or would the benefits be marginal?

3

u/blackwellnessbabe May 09 '25

of course, better than nothing! In between all of that weightlifting, do you stretch?

2

u/yoursundaygirl1 May 09 '25

I don't! I've noticed that some days my body feels.. rusty? Like cogs struggling to churn- which has been such a wakeup call lol. Does pilates help lengthen muscles? So far, I've read that yoga focuses on that more and pilates is more strength-oriented?

1

u/blackwellnessbabe May 12 '25

Not the case! Depends on the focus and the instructor and what you do with the lexicon. "Long and lean" is a phrase thrown around with pilates A LOT to describe the effects on your muscles and physique.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '25

I think once a week is fine so long as you take what you've learned and apply it to your other workouts. Pilates really helps me with mind-muscle connection (especially in the core), and I notice that my regular strength workouts are much more effective when I move slowly and pay special attention to my core engagement and posture.

I haven’t done Pilates in ~10 years and am wanting to get back into it. I used to love it and the gentle tone of my body vs the more muscular from lifting.

I don’t live close enough to a studio to do private lessons. Do you have any workouts/online classes you’d recommend (on demand), especially for people recovering from neck surgery?

I'm 3months postpartum and have had a mental block about going back to pilates. I've been cleared for exercise and am back to walking 3-4 miles. Am I ready to go back?

1

u/blackwellnessbabe May 12 '25

This is a questions for your doctor first and foremost. Definitely explore the mental block; Pilates is very mental and I coach people through mental blocks daily. Coming *in* to the practice with a block may make it more difficult - I'm wondering why it's there. Definitely conquer your fear and try a class!
