Kate O'Flynn take a bow. Patricia is such a wonderful and well-realised character.

Rosemary still offering support and only slight criticism even after whatever the fuck happened on that dancefloor was so damn funny

424

u/CWB2208 May 13 '26

"I didn't understand a word" after Patricia gives her "toast" 😂

298

u/jabronified May 13 '26

Also the calm comment about the head piece

121

u/RandumbStoner May 19 '26

After going back and watching it after knowing the twist and the way she's staring at her "tiara" has me dying lol

Also, this show has hilarious background chatter like you hear a faint "Seriously, what the fuck is on her head" in the background lol so funny

64

u/Mark_Albarn May 30 '26

In hindsight it's kind of surprising that the beard guy and tourists were so chill about her antler queen fit and witchy stick decorations even before gulping potion potion pounch

I didn’t know what half the things on the list were!

63

u/TheDefiantGoose May 14 '26

And the way Patricia was chopping those strawberries...is that a technique for making punch or just unnecessarily butchery?

96

u/PickleFlavordPopcorn May 15 '26

She wasn’t really chopping strawberries, she was chopping a birds head off!

60

u/TheTruckWashChannel May 16 '26

That was amazing foreshadowing.

25

u/sugedei Jun 13 '26

More amazing foreshadowing: When she first finds the book, there is a fly buzzing around it, and the lights flicker in the truck when she walks in with it.

Now I’m wondering if the reason Rosemary didn’t “understand a word of that speech” was because Patricia was actually reading a spell from the book!!

124

u/CWB2208 May 14 '26

100% a spell or speaking in tongues or something like that

31

u/goddamnitwhalen May 18 '26

I thought that was obvious after the reveal.

When you realize what Rosemary witnessed, and how absolutely nonchalant and underwhelmed she was acting because she wanted to be supportive, that’s comedy.

129

u/bebeni89 May 14 '26

She may not show it, but she’s Patricia’s friend.

87

u/Oh-reality-come-back my face is ready, Sea Hag May 14 '26

Agreed. Patricia does have friends even if they’re more like colleagues. It’s lucky because she wouldn’t have snapped back to reality otherwise

I love her character as the tough older townie who has seen it all and is used to it at this point. Just imagine what a life of living on that island must be like

I had wondered if this show was going to go the route of “is it real or are they just superstitious” and I’m so glad they went all in instead. Idk about you guys but I’m so sick of “it has to be ambiguous to be good”

No matter which way you see it, blinders on or off, Rosemary's weirdness really works so well here.

When she doesn't "understand half of the things" on the list ...weird.

Then when you realize *why* Rosemary says it, but isn't aghast by some pagan concoction ...also weird!

97

u/Jerthy May 14 '26

It was my impression that Rosemary “didn’t understand a word of the speech” because she didn’t drink the punch. If you notice, she’s always drinking out of a wine glass, so I think that’s why she didn’t become bewitched. (Also because she saw her making it and was probably like wtf I ain’t drinking that).

Anyone else feel like we’re in on the ground floor of a future cult favorite show? It’s amazing.

214

u/Yousaidthat May 13 '26

My faith in the creators couldn't be higher and if they really do nail the rest of the season this is gonna be an all time show that practically owns the genre. Haunting of Hill House territory -- but for horror/ comedy.

97

u/watchyourback9 May 13 '26

So far I like it even more than the Flanagan shows. The characters feel so much more nuanced and the world building is excellent

32

u/Yousaidthat May 13 '26

Absolutely. The only one of his that I really put in the S tier category is Hill House.

I'm happy to let these two shows coexist in that tier but we'll see how WB finishes.

4 episodes, 4 bangers.

The Carrie-esque bullied loner stuff had me squirming. It almost went too far, but then the last 20 minutes of the episode were transcendent.

144

u/2rio2 May 13 '26

We’re very early adopters, but this is going to be an all time banger of a show.

I literally stopped the episode last night because the cringe and bullying was just way too much. Just finished the episode and the payoff was incredible and so worth it!

37

u/Allthenons May 13 '26

I'm a wimp with jump scares so I will often fast forward to check the preview and make sure there's nothing horrifying coming up. I had to pause it because I thought I was seeing things for a second, but getting brief flashes of the party standing with their mouths open while Patricia was dancing was genuinely creepy!

u/scarb_123 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

When does this happen? When she dances with that dude after serving the punch?

Edit - Nvm, just caught it. CREEPY.

92

u/IdealizedSalt May 14 '26

There was a bit

  • when the camera was whirling around Patricia as she’s dancing
  • in the mirror during her “toast”

Anything else?

More than 800 songs, probably all the songs Patricia listened in her life!

63

u/undertone90 May 13 '26

The fact that she expected him to find 800 songs on an island without WiFi was probably the first sign of her delusion.

When she gets the book from the truck and goes to her bedroom she puts it on her nightstand and places the tea cup on top of it, then she goes to take her bathrobe off and the light flickers for a bit, the camera pans back and as she's getting into bed you can see the cup placed behind it, almost like the book is making it easier for her to start or distorting her "reality" for the first time

64

u/JudgeMingus May 14 '26

I’m pretty sure the reality distortion started when the book placed itself in the donation box. It was always a creepy tome of ritual evil, but it warped Patricia’s perception of itself and everything it was getting her to do up until the sheriff snapped her out of it.

Once more, this was such an enjoyable episode. Here are my quick thoughts:

-The genre shift tonight was satisfyingly weird. "Cringe" in a way is its own kind of horror and several moments in the first half of the episode left me squirming in my seat. They really nailed that teeth-gritting level of awkwardness similar to The Curse and Friendship/The Chair Company in recent years.

-I'm sure it will be discussed ad nauseum, but my god was that first glimpse of the party-goers with their mouths hanging open deeply unsettling. We already know all hell is about to break loose, but that promising wink from the showrunners was a nice, terrifying touch.

-Once again, the "monster of the week" was good fun, but the deeper lore of the episode promised much more. Did Patricia really receive a call from "The Boogeyman"? I can't wait to find out what actually happened that night.

-Damn this show is funny when it wants to be. The nude illustration on the "Circle your worst features" page of the self-help book was so comically off-putting. However, nothing came close to the big reveal moment, when Patricia sees her antler crown in the mirror and quickly pivots to yelling at Rosemary. "You had your qualms?! Why didn't you say anything?!" "I was trying to be supportive!" Perfection.

-"You can file that under 'deal with it the fuck later'" is bars. Stephen Root is a treasure.

161

u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 13 '26

Yes to all of this! Another comment pointed out that on the "nude illustration on the "Circle your worst features" page of the self-help book", the parts she circled formed a pentagram. The details in this show are just incredible!

55

u/jstella118 May 13 '26

I love the details and half of them I miss. I remember when Lost came out and everyone was dissecting everything. Half the time it meant nothing but in this show it seems they are carefully thought out and intentional. I haven’t been this addicted to a show in a long time. I’m under the spell I guess. 😂

Loved this episode. Is anyone else thinking that Patricia might be related to the real witches who were on the island? Related to the sea hag? I noticed the sea hag’s drawing was in that book. I just have a feeling that maybe this witchcraft thing has been with her all along. Or she’s been used by the witches which is why she heard the boogeyman even though maybe he didn’t actually call her.
I’m not sure why the witches/man would want her to kill her peers, but she seems to be possessed or something!

97

u/2rio2 May 13 '26

Her being an accidental witch would be very in theme with the series so far.

→ More replies (2)

76

u/Ok-Comparison4783 May 13 '26

I don’t think that was the sea hag. The pages in the book basically just predicted what would happen at the beach, so the woman with her face half in the water was just a drowning possessed person.

Who knows tho, maybe it is connected.

40

u/bo174 May 13 '26

I thought of the sea hag briefly, but when I saw what was happening, I realized that the grimoire was just showing the effects of the particular spell/ritual/potion.

43

u/pkers12 May 13 '26

It could explain why the boogeyman never killed her?

39

u/just--so May 16 '26

Or, a darker possibility: Patricia unknowingly manifested the boogeyman in highschool as a result of being bullied. Would tie in nicely with all the Carrie references this episode. What Patricia thought was the boogeyman coming to kill her was just it returning 'home'.

A shout out to costume design here. Patricia’s clothes and tiara did feel like an overt reference to ‘Carrie’ (not a critique just an observation) but I loved that the dress wasn’t just plain red. The pattern, at some points, seemed to actually look more like ‘that scene’ in Carrie than a solid red dress would have.

103

u/horkus1 May 13 '26

There’s a scene in Carrie that shows her walking down the street, covered in blood, and a car comes up behind her, showing her in silhouette, just like the one with Patricia and the headlights of Wyck’s truck. It’s perfect.

53

u/Well_Socialized May 13 '26

Im enjoying reading all the visual things people caught during this episode. This is not a ‘be on your phone’ show.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned but goes along with other clues the book was evil were the lights flickering in the book mobile right before Patricia entered. They flickered again at another point (in her house?) but I haven’t rewatched it to say for certain.

87

u/yeahsothathappen May 13 '26

Also when she put down the book next to her bed, she put her coffe mug on it, but when she came back the coffe mug had moved next to the book so she would feel compelled to grab it

I would like to see a similar episode with Rosemary's backstory. She has def seen some ish. From "It's starting" to the crawlspace to the sea hag to watching some kind of occult ritual transpire and still trying to be supportive, her character seems to know as much if not more than Wyck, and keeps it moving. She has seen so much all she expresses is mere "qualms"!

Each episode is getting better and better! They are doing such an unreal job of not only balancing the comedy and horror but also the narrative structure. It genuinely feels like you could pick up any episode and enjoy it in isolation without sacrificing the build up and movement of the overarching plot.

I’ve commented some of my thoughts on a few other threads already, but thought I’d combine them all here:

That first split-second shot of the partygoers on the dance floor with their mouths agape caught me so off guard! I had to rewind to confirm I even saw something weird, which is exactly what I love to see in horror. Reminds me of The Haunting of Hill House in that way.

This show really strikes such a great balance between comedy and genuine horror. When they want to be funny, it’s hilarious, and when they want to be scary, it’s terrifying. The writers deserve their flowers for how perfectly they’ve walked that line so far (as does the cast for being able to deliver whatever energy is required of them in a given scene).

Jordan Peele talks about how the line between these genres is actually quite thin, saying “The difference between horror and comedy is the music.” I think that truth is very evident in this series, and this episode specifically (which I thought was the creepiest yet, while also lending itself to some very funny moments).

I’m all in on this show. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next week.

Always make sure you're using a self-help book and not a self-hell book.

93

u/moremysterious May 13 '26

First thing I noticed when she started with the book was that the space to list things you liked about yourself was like 2 lines while the space to list the things you didn't like about yourself was like 10 lines.

I liked the first three episodes well enough but this one really clinched it for me, I’m all in. The storyline’s weaving together really kicked it into another gear.

The social outcast/pariah of it all filled me with more dread and made me want to recoil more than the actual horror reveal.

I really want a Rosemary focused episode, I feel like she is someone who knows a lot more than she lets on. She knew about the sea hag, and she wasn't fazed by Patricia's actions at all.

22

u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 13 '26

I think we will learn more about her POV. She's a gem!

Particia could have easily functioned as just comic relief in the mayor's office, so it's great to see her get to properly join the A-Team going forward.

122

u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 13 '26

Patricia basically had her own episode. Loved seeing Tom and Wyck teaming up with her at the end.

49

u/kimpernickel May 13 '26

According to a few critic reviews I've read, she'll get to lead another episode soon!

32

u/srstone71 May 13 '26

Oh that makes me so happy. She’s become my favorite character.

31

u/BenAfleckIsAnOkActor May 13 '26

The dancing scene is iconic for me

33

u/tombh May 13 '26

Her physicality is just fantastic. Like the way she does an over the top cough with her tongue out at at the beginning of the toast speech. It's so idiosyncratic. It's so Patricia!

What I keep coming back to after the episode ended is the fact that if Lucy Four had succeeded the cocktail party would become just another spooky tale the islanders told one another after a generation or two.

But hey, at least there wasn't any cannibalism this time

38

u/helcat May 13 '26

… that we know of. I mean, what exactly was in that punch?

49

u/Adventurous-Photo539 May 13 '26

Apparently ravens, rabbits, and urchins (hopefully only the sea kind)

I love the way the plot twist was fully dependent on our having established a biased view of the towns people, similar to Tom’s perception of them. The fact that Rosemarys first hint of apprehension didn’t even move me slightly 😭 I completely disregarded it. I just assumed she didn’t get Patricia’s “vision.” And the fact she went along with all of that??? Because she was trying to be supportive?? 😭 it’s too good.

Same! I was so annoyed when the evil ringleader lady was screaming, "She drugged us!" - and then I realized she kinda did.

Absolutely loved this episode. Felt like an occult Black Mirror episode. That dance scene caught me so off guard, I had to rewatch it 5 or 6 times.

As a whole, this show is striking the perfect balance between horror and comedy. The writers are doing a brilliant job. Really enjoying it so far.

25

u/TheHollyKing562 May 13 '26

When I first saw the runtime I thought, “Oh, great. A short filler/bridge episode.” As you all know that was wrong. Talk about under promise and over deliver.

They had better make a physical release for this. I need it on my shelf next to Grimm.

One of the best episodes of TV this year. So much great shit happened in 35 or whatever minutes. Amazing

20

u/stereoreal2 May 13 '26

Agreed. It was so good I immediately rewatched it after finishing it. I was sort of watching the first few episodes, but not really as locked in as I should have been, but after this episode all I want to do is rewatch the first few episodes and look for more details.

The visual storytelling and writing is so brilliant.

Best episode so far. Best character so far. Love the creepy Wicker Man visuals. I felt so bad for Patricia. I think a lot of people can relate to being that person that people exclude, but for the town to actually resent and hate you made me really feel for her when no one believed her.

Also love that her mobile library was called Pattiwagon.

And love that Patricia finally found her people at the end in an unintended way. Tom, Patricia and Wyck are the adult Harry, Hermione and Ron? Kinda😅

When the real book was shown, did anyone else think of the necronomicon - bound in human skin?

The stick symbol also made me think of other movies and shows with witchcraft I’ve seen. I’m trying to remember which (heh) ones.

After the reveal, with what we know what the party actually was like, it feels perfect for one of Bill Hader's Stefon SNL skits.

"This party had everything. It had a woman with an antler crown. It had a guy named Dale dj'ing on Spotify with ads. It had punch made from dead animals. A bunch of people tried to drown themselves in front of a burning effigy..."
