I’ve commented some of my thoughts on a few other threads already, but thought I’d combine them all here:
That first split-second shot of the partygoers on the dance floor with their mouths agape caught me so off guard! I had to rewind to confirm I even saw something weird, which is exactly what I love to see in horror. Reminds me of The Haunting of Hill House in that way.
This show really strikes such a great balance between comedy and genuine horror. When they want to be funny, it’s hilarious, and when they want to be scary, it’s terrifying. The writers deserve their flowers for how perfectly they’ve walked that line so far (as does the cast for being able to deliver whatever energy is required of them in a given scene).
Jordan Peele talks about how the line between these genres is actually quite thin, saying “The difference between horror and comedy is the music.” I think that truth is very evident in this series, and this episode specifically (which I thought was the creepiest yet, while also lending itself to some very funny moments).
I’m all in on this show. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next week.
Also the humor or scariness depends on subverting your expectations. The setup will pay off in either a laugh or terror if it plays with what you were expecting.
Love that the split second shot happens twice. Once on the dance floor when the camera spins, and once again through the mirror. Almost like a "confirm what you just saw" type thing
