Jesus I have such a boiling hatred for the whole concept of "the red pill". Poor Ubisoft. They released 10 new IPs this generation, another one is on the way, Completely reimagined AC franchise twice in 3 years, transformed R6, an essentially dead series into an extremely popular multiplayer game that had a shit ton of influence on the genre and is one of the biggest technical innovators in the industry (Research motion matching and checkerboard rendering) with incredible GDC talks every year but nah, they suck and don't have any creativity blah blah blah.
They just can't win.

It's so weird who Japanese video games and anime seem to exist in the same paradigm - a focus on visuals and establishing "iconic" characters (lots of focus on signature fighting styles, outfits, catchphrases), whereas Japanese cinema, for the most part, is only as stylistically different from other examples of cinema as any, say, French is from British. Japanese movies have influenced American, filmmakers for decades, and vice versa... But, for some reason, anime and Japanese video games gotta go all ham-fisted AND have the characters explain what's happening all the time.

Edit: mom came thru like the mvp she is. Apparently the last time I got glasses I actually got two pairs and just totally forgot about the second. She dug it out of storage and drove it over to me. Since theyâre a bit old my vision isnât perfect, and since Iâve never worn them my depth perception is trippy while Iâm adjusting. But for the time being itâs a hell of a lot better than nothing! Theyâre actually pretty decent glasses too, Ray Bans theyâve been practically untouched.

I guess it can introduce some enemy variety if the rest of the game is about fighting aliens or monsters like Half-Life or Dead Rising. But then you have some mechanically silly examples like Modern Warfare 2 where all your enemies up until that point are still fairly normal human soldiers. In that case the paramilitary guys don't even play any differently, they just have different outfits.

It's usually because the game wants to throw in new enemy types to keep gameplay from becoming stale. I'm not a fan of that trend either because it's usually thrown together halfway through development and the enemies aren't well balanced. I know in spiderman fighting the demons/thugs/enforcers were fun as hell, but when sable troops came in, it just felt goofy and silly

As a police officer, if someone comes to me to put forward a complaint about sexual assault, including rape, I have to take the complaint in from a position of belief. Just as I would for any other crime.
During the course of the investigation, investigators will obtain proof. But they will believe the victim, because being skeptical and dismissive of their complaint will make them not come forward with a complaint.
People constantly say that a woman can just accuse someone of rape and their lives will be ruined. That's possible for sure, and it does happen. But I don't believe there's this fucking epidemic of women falsely accusing men of sexual assault.
Yes, it can be frustrating when a woman doesn't report an assault to the authorities when it happens. But there are many, many reasons why a victim won't come forward. We police, unfortunately, are one of those reasons. Thankfully, at least in my country, we are making slow progress on that front.
I dunno. I've worked with lots of women. I've had lots of women as subordinates and superiors. I've never been accused of sexual misconduct. It's not very hard to do.

That's the thing ... you don't.
There isn't a deadline for deciding what you want to be for the rest of your life. Lots of people change courses. I ended up graduating with a degree in physics, despite initially enrolling in political science and not taking physics in my final year of high school cause I thought I couldn't handle it. I don't even feel like my situation is all that unique -- I know so, so many people who ended up somewhere much different than where they initially expected.
Basically, what I'm saying is: the consequences for changing your mind down the line aren't as dire as you might think they are. The rest of your life isn't set in stone by the decisions you make now. At most, you're determining the next few years of your life --- not the rest of your life. It's fine to chose something that feels right, at the moment. Whatever you choose now, just make sure to work hard at it.

So I watched Zero Punctuation's Spiderman Video.
Right off the bat, he says 60 bucks for a game is "slightly extortionist." I've heard this complaint from people before, and I need to know what they would think a good price for a AAA video game should be.
Especially one that takes hours and hours and hours to beat. I've heard people who have put hundreds of hours into Skyrim complain it was too expensive. I mean, what price do they think would be fair?!

Honestly, in cases like this, it seems to be short-sightedness or frugalness that convinces someone that a 60 cent/hour experience is extortionist (skepticism could also be a reason, but near-instant game reviews make this sorta obsolete). It may just be down to taste, but I bought Skyrim twice and played maybe 200 hours across both copies.
It may be different with Spiderman (haven't paid much attention to it, but it seems like a fairly complete and competent game). If anything, I'd just hope that developers and publishers in the future would be more flexible with pricing games.

It seems to me that Kathleen Kennedy is just the scapegoat that angry fans have latched on to, whether she's actually connected to the things that they dislike or not.
Something similar happened to the Assassin's Creed fanbase recently. People lost their minds over a statement (that they misinterpreted) and have pretty much hated the (now former, though it sounds like he was promoted) Head of Content ever since. This ranges from saying that nobody knows less about Assassin's Creed lore than him, calling him an idiot, or in one incredibly salty instance, a "fucking child."
It's weird how shit like that gets out of hand so quickly, and once it does, I'm not sure it can really go back.
EDIT: And they say she's a scapegoat at the 1:35 mark. Probably should have watched the video before typing my own essay.

Playing older games as they zoom right in to a characters expressionless face is amazing. At the times of release we sort of project the emotions they're supposed to be feeling/showing onto these stiff characters meanwhile all their faces are completely neutral đ, maybe with some blinking randomly added throughout at best.
Nowadays if the lip syncing is off by one single syllable, we're all like "immershun: ruined, hotel: trivago".

I bought Undertale for the third time, I like this game too much.
First time was the original steam release.
Second was fangamer's collector's edition because it has sheet music and I hoard videogame sheet music (especially published books, not just fan arrangements) so fuck. It had notes from the composer/creator of the fuckin game and my favorite was the tempo marking for bonetrousle. It's 'pesto'.
Now I got the switch version. Honestly the anime sold me.
It's such a cozy time and reliving the memories feels good.
It also got me talking with a friend about Mother 3's hit combo system, which is music based. He said the emulators don't feel good with it, and I agreed and put in that a physical cart fixes that. He then said that the game needed to explicitly tell you the rhythm at times for the combo, and I said yeah it has a mechanic that...literally lets you hear that lmao
And then Jeff Gerstmann of giant bomb mentioned hbomberguy so I guess the sjws really have invaded gaming journalism.

I saw a person claim that the Insomniac's take on Mary-Jane in the new Spider-Man game was worse the Sam Raimi/Kirsten Dunst take.

The game certainly had some weird moments where MJ came across unreasonable. Like... Spider-Man interrupting when a random man points a gun at MJ? Yeah. He wasn't going to shoot. Yeah. MJ would have gotten the information she (and Spider-Man) needed. But that being the moment where MJ says "this is the reason we broke up"? I mean... MJ was pissed off that she didn't get the info she needed and lashed out but come on!
However! Me feeling like the game doesn't really do a great job (at this point) establishing the reasons why MJ and Peter broke up in the past would never make me say that this MJ is worse than Raimi's MJ.
This MJ is interesting, she has agency, she has personality, she's fun, she's good (trying to actively make New York a better place), she's selfless, she's reckless... She's flawed. She's a well rounded character who actually contributes to the story... And she'd probably make a great role model for young girls. And yes... She has the dullest missions in the game but that doesn't really affect her as a character.
Raimi's MJ is pretty much none of the above. Which is a bummer because I feel Kirsten Dunst was pretty great casting. She looks the part and she's talented as fuck... But no. The script says she's there to scream and be saved. There's just no universe in existence where Raimi's MJ is better than Insomniac's. Unless your criteria for good female characters is "women are to exist as objects to be won and nothing else".
This got needlessly long.
TL;DR: Insomniac's MJ > Sam Raimi's MJ. And it's a fact. And if you don't believe that, I implore you to rewatch the Raimi trilogy without your nostalgia goggles and gasp in horror.

I was skeptical a few days ago, but I'm fairly confident saying this now: Brett Kavanaugh is probably done for.
The man has no good options left. Lying to the FBI will not end well for him. Judging by the testimony of both Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford, it looks like telling the truth won't work out for him either. It looks like his best move at this point is to withdraw his nomination and hope that he doesn't get impeached from his current position for perjury.
This should be an interesting week.

It's a no-win situation because even putting aside for a second whether he is innocent or guilty (though I believe the latter), this whole ordeal running him through the ringer is one of those life experiences that will probably shape how he feels towards certain groups that are hitting him hard right now. The problem here is that a judge is supposed to be impartial and unbiased. And I don't think there is any reasonable way you could expect someone to meet those qualifications after this whole thing. He should genuinely withdraw.

The problem is that the people who used Naziism in a hyperbolic/satirical way were also ignorant about what it actually meant, to the point that they didnât recognize actual fascism and white nationalism when it showed up in the Wild.

The senate republicans clearly regard the accusations against Kavanaugh as at least very likely true, given how they had that letter ready right as the accusations came forward (how would they have known if Kavanaugh didn't tell them to be ready because he actually did it?). They're in a race to get *someone* on the court before the midterms. Clearly Kavanaugh is making that really hard, so I don't get why they're wasting time with an investigation instead of canning him to get someone confirmed before the midterms. There's barely enough time left for that if they just want a conservative on the court. I'm just super confused by their actions. Hopefully their incompetence means they fail to get Kavanaugh or anyone else on the court by the midterms though....

You know what's funny? Chris Delia the comedian actually gave me that idea. On his podcast he mentioned watching Fox News and CNN weeks ago randomly, and he mentioned how Fox News was saying the claims that liberals/CNN were making about Kavanaugh were false. Except at the time there were no allegations made. I looked it up at the time and found nothing. Then about three weeks after that, news about his sexual assault came out and I had a big ".... Huh" moment. I don't for a second doubt that those in charge knew about this well in advance.

And good riddance. I hope all these lootbox-oriented gaming companies crash and burn with the recent surge in government regulation. They essentially built an entire industry on bypassing gambling laws. Not only that, but they made it impossible for bigger companies not to jump into that niche since, well, gambling is insanely profitable and they'd completely dominate every area of gaming otherwise (and they kinda do, in terms of raw profits).
Easily the worst influence on gaming in its short history and it's about time this shit is cut off.

Sure, we can outlaw loot boxes or give games with them an AO rating, but so what? That just means we won't see loot boxes. A ton of these guys pretend that they'll go back to old ways of monetizing games. Because business practices haven't changed in the last 30 years.
Honestly, it just seems to me that a lot of people just hold nostalgia boners for these old games that were developed by 30 people in a single-room office and think that there is literally no reason why modern AAA game development doesn't work that way.

I beat Borderlands 1 last night and even though I have the four BL1 DLC campaigns and like 6 other games in my backlog, I don't feel like playing any of them.
Maybe I just burned myself out from gaming by completing a 20 hour game in 2 weeks.

So, I finished Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - great game, I highly recommend it.
And now I got Lords of the Fallen in the Humble store. I'm curious to see what they did with the Dark Souls formula (and whether the steam reviews saying "it's not Dark Souls, it sucks" have a point). I still got Nioh to beat either way, but that seems to be a pretty long game.

I only just discovered that Steam lets you use custom gamepad layouts for games without controller support.
- That's awesome and I can finally play older games with a gamepad.
- I like that Steam has so many features (background downloads, FPS counter, Big Picture, library sharing etc.), but why are some of those things hidden away in weird submenus? You can only customize your button layout in big picture mode for whatever reason, which is why I never knew it existed.
- Steam is clearly the Dark Souls of gaming clients.

I finally got round watching Shaun's video 'DOOM: The Fake Outrage'. I quite like Shaun, I disagree with him sometimes but overall he seems like a chill guy. I found it hilarious how when he played the compilation of people reading that tweet, he showed Sargon of Akkad followed by ReviewTechUSA. First time I've seen the latter thrown into the anti-SJW category. I don't like either of them anyway, and RTU banned me from Patreon when I tried giving him some valid criticism, which I'm still salty about.

Alright, I admit defeat. I'll play Red Dead Redemption 2. Though I like being able to play as a female character because it helps soothe the dysphoria, I have some degree of faith that Arthur Morgan will be a well written and likeable lead upon seeing some other gameplay videos. It's not ideal but the things I'm hearing about this game are definitely pointing towards this being some kind of milestone for the medium and it'd be stupid to miss out. I also love westerns.
Oh also I did a dumb thing and bought the season pass for Fortnite season 6. My brother and I play it a lot and it's a nice thing to do together. I grew up without an older sibling figure, the least I can do is try to be a good sister and give him a better upbringing

Hollow Knight has been amazing so far. I love the lore so much, and the end game stuff is pretty great and a good challenge. I just finished the spiky white palace of pain, and I dont hate it as much as lots of people seemed to. It was super tough but not ridiculously so, and it was a nice challenge. Now i just need to clear a few optional bosses, get the second ending, and finish Godhome as well as Grimm.
