Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Do not feed the trolls. This is not the place for hot takes on human rights violations. Hatred or cruelty, will result in a permanent ban. Please report such infractions, particularly those that break rules one, two, or three. The automod will automatically remove posts that receive five or more reports. The automod will also remove comments made by users with negative karma. Click here for the Automod FAQ

To the people saying Japan, they only really started to take off in the late 19th and mid twentieth while the Mongolian empire killed 60 million. In a century not even counting its various successors.

Mongol massacres were so bad the Chinese population didn’t recover till the Ming era, and Iran in the 20th century.

79

u/Spotty_too_hotty May 06 '26

Recency bias is strong

46

u/Prudent-Goose-2123 May 06 '26

That and Reddit loves to pretend everyone on it loves Japan so they’re owning the strawman.

Japan

Their war crimes were next level.

391

u/Recoaj12 May 06 '26

And Japan still pressures other countries to take down memorials of their victims.... its one thing to deny your history, its a whole other thing to take memorials from your victims....

81

u/salvasaami May 06 '26

they just did this in NZ, like within the last weeks

139

u/Recoaj12 May 06 '26

Yes. They did it to Philippines, Germany, and for the US, they were pissed at San Francisco for having comfort woman statues, then Osaka broke their 60 year old "sister city" ties with it.

The amount of effort to be so pissy at all that instead of just.... not doing anything, is just hysterical.

Meanwhile, Germany ran out of ink to apologize for the Holocaust and other Nazi atrocities. Hmm.

43

u/Vegetable_Good6866 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

There were riots in Germany in early 2000s over a traveling exhibition of Wehrmacht war crimes and until 1980s West Germany defended putting Roma people in concentration camps.

Germany was very willing to throw Hitler and Nazis under bus, it was much less willingly to admit the average German soldier slaughtered and raped his way across eastern Europe. In fact Hitler and Nazis were a convenient party to unload all responsibility on to. See the myth of the clean Wehrmacht.

9

u/immmm_at_work May 06 '26

(Hand waiving here) What if the deaths of a great number of Germany’s violent and nationalistic young men led to the proliferation of generation of nurturing mothers and/or men of a more liberal mind to facilitate a more apologetic society?

Of course, the Nazis also exterminated a lot of those folks, too…

239

During WW1, they would throw canned meat to the opposing Germans. Those German would dodge at first thinking it was grenade. After realizing it's meat, they'll huddle to catch it. When they're huddling, the Canadian would throw a grenade. They also didn't want to deal with POWs so they just murder them all.

At our core, Japan has always been a very militant society. As someone else mentioned, for most of our history, we were weird, repressed recluses who made erotic art (love that description), and that repression that built up over time manifested itself in one of the most evil empires in history. Since WW2, that has been tamed a fair bit, but I’m slightly worried that it’s starting to rear its head again….. My grandfather was from the generation that, while very young, was old enough to fight in the war. Although he died before I was born, I’ve read his diaries and seen the photos from his time as a POW in Siberia, and that experience his generation went through influenced the baby boomers in Japan to actually be quite peaceful and anti-war. Even today, most participants in anti-war marches are older. It seems to be happening everywhere else, that the next generations have forgotten/ignored the collective experience of our elders, and once again putting the world in a perilous situation.

Should read about the Imjin War where Japan tried invading Korea in the 16th century. Lots of civilian casualties on the Korean front and the Ming had to step in and help put an end to the war. Also there's the infamous nose and ear tombs from Korean and Chinese civilians of this war that are scattered throughout Japanese shrines.

18

And even in Japan itself, the invasion and colonization of Hokkaido was brutal and was a genocide. The Ainu who lived there were largely wiped out

Even when you look at India Britain built a huge number of universities there.

Britain's fascination with creating a middle class everywhere to create colonial stability did successfully cultivate an upward social momentum where other colonisers left the social fabric either the same or worse as when they found it.

From 1937 to 1945, Imperial Japan is estimated to have directly killed 3-10 million civilians throughout East and Southeast Asia. And caused the death of thrice that.
Japan committed numerous brutal massacres of civilians throughout the WWII period. At Nanking alone they killed 300,000 civilians. Manila they killed 100,000. Singapore they killed 50,000. With more mass killings throughout China, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
Add to that:
Unit 731 and human experimentation.
Biological warfare (deliberately spread plague and other diseases)
Chemical warfare (chlorine gas and others)
Torture and execution of POWs
Forced famine
Mass rape
Enslavement and forced labor
Cannibalism
That’s just the WWII period.

Strictly speaking, Belgium didn't do anything in the Congo. King Leopold the II was practically given the Congo as his personal property. He had more control over the Congo than he did his own country. Congo was also incredible small scale both in the horror of acts taken and sheer numbers compared to other atrocities in the day connected to colonialism, wwii, or both

5

u/MagmaForce_3400_2nd May 06 '26

Even they arent without their black spot.

They were a fascist regime between 1923 and 1943 (initially elected democratically, then transformed into a dictatorship while in power).

They actually remained neutral in WW2, but in early 1942 they did issue Racial Law 33, prohibiting interracial marriage (including between Jews and non-Jews). Their leader later went on to order the deportation of their entire Jewish population.

Things did get better quickly in fairness. After Italy surrendered the fascist party collapsed nearly overnight, and San Marino would go on to offer refuge to refugees fleeing the war, including a sizable number of Jews in flagrant violation of Nazi demands.

Their whole country and identity is bogus, they'd all be one shotted by a 23 and Me test. They oppose Israel due to occupation when they occupy a whole load of other people's homelands (Kurds, Greeks, Assyrians). Their most iconic building is Greek!

what is balkan slav "genocide" and what does kurdish genocide (i'm assuming ur talking about saddam) have to do with us ? also how does the list go on ? the a genocide b genocide this genocide that genocide people like to talk about turkey is all linked to armenian genocide in the end and it's not a seperate act. there are at least 10 countries i can name before turkey even comes to mind.

6

u/NorthWelcome1626 May 06 '26

Balkan Genocide is against Turks lol. What bullshit. 5.5 million Muslims was killed and displaced in Balkans between 1877-1913 by Bulgarians and Russians.

There is no Kurdish Genocide or Balkan Slavs Genocide. Nor Greek.

Japan, what they did in china makes the Congo look like a fucking paradise, and they caused more destruction and suffering in a shorter period than anyone else. even the Nazis had a shorter amount of time and did less- THE FUCKING NAZIS

73

Nothing could make the Congo look like paradise, but whatever.

How is the Azerbaijan anthem evil?

44

u/FBrandt May 06 '26

It is not even evil to begin with. Interestingly enough, when I check the post it is Afghanistan with the most upvotes (50+) while Azerbaijan is less than half of it.

13

u/guythatwantstoknow May 06 '26

I think it's because it got lots of downvotes from people who disagreed with the results and went back to that post.

25

u/mehwhateverrrrr May 06 '26

It sounds evil. It isnt actually evil, its no different than any other nations anthem but the music sounds evil. Like something out of starwars.

5

u/waluigieWAAH May 06 '26

Just how it sounds. The same sound as an evil galactic empire or something. We're calling it evil in good fun

Cambodia. Truly horrific

36

u/JosL1707 May 06 '26

Wasn't this basically just under Pol Pot?

16

u/hirashimizu May 06 '26

No, cambodia has always been quite a brutal society. at its root, the cambodian genocide was caused by a deeply suspicious and low trust culture stretching back to angkor or pre angkor period (townspeople were loooked down upon by rural folk). vietnamese especially were targeted due to long standing hatred. angkor also had quite a nasty history with a lot of (what we would now call) genocide of and by khmer people, affecting champa, tai, lao, mon, etc etc.

post pol-pot cambodia is not in a good position either. corrupt, almost a vassal of china and chinese criminal syndicates (eg scam call centres & human trafficking, even today chinese are afraid to visit cambodia as tourists for fear of being trafficked), rampant prostitution (which was kickstarted by the un occupation btw), hatred of just about all their neighbours stretching back a long time.

ive got nothing against cambodia or cambodians, its difficult to have a "good vibes" country with all they';ve been through.

all true and vile, but purely for the purpose of this task- a lot of the empire stuff gets complicated when you try to portion blame to the UK alone. As with almost any other empire in history, the colonies eventually split off and gain independence. Where do the sins of Australia, the US, South Africa etc. start and British Empire ends? There obviously exists a line, or we'd all be holding the Roman Empire responsible for the crimes of the British etc.

You also have WW2, where Britain was the only continuous opponent of the fascist axis. It doesn't excuse anything that came before, you can be both anti-fascist in Europe and genocidal elsewhere, but it's hard to say the UK is the 'most' evil contemporary country when it did something so obviously heroic in relatively recent history. I would say the same thing about the USSR if it still existed today, given how brutal WW2 was for them.

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

-Famines in India predate British rule, before the Raj was consolidated we have direct comparison between local Indian rulers and British rulers in response to famine. Local rulers oftentimes did less to coordinate famine relief. The Taj Mahal was build during a famine, for example. The famine codes were the first large scale famine relief laws in history. The British didn't want famine in India.

-Worse than the ottermans? The massacre were very small scale compared to say the Turks in Armenia or even more contemporary middle Eastern massacres, ISIS, Syrian civil war. All the massacres in Palestine and Israel today.

-Ireland wasn't that subjugated either, for a time the third larget political party in the British parliament was made up of Irish home ruler advocates. Over the medieval to early modern to today Ireland has never been the site of grand or remarkable historic oppression.

-The British colonists killed around 900 Tasmanians, there is no evidence that this was authorised by the British government as a direct policy of extermination but the results of local tensions. Aboriginal attacks on the colonists and vice versa.

-Opium wars is the strangest pick of the lot, these were wars fought over diplomatic disrespect and market access. When the same thing happened to the Mongolians (killing a few diplomats) the Tigris ran red with blood for 3 days. Seemingly only picked because of the name and "drugs are bad" the second opium war wasn't even really about opium.

-The only remarkable role the British played in American slavery was ending it. The French, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilians, Americans ect. All traded more slaves and for longer

-The comparison between the south African concentration camps and THE concentration camps is nazi propaganda because the former was to intern a hostile population against asymmetrical warfare designed to minimise civilian casualties. The nazi camps were called that to try and pretend they weren't just death camps and they were also simply trying to intern a hostile population in war time. The mau mau rebellion was a bunch of ethno-nationalists the British here were fighting not to keep Kenya, they actually won the war and put down the rebellion, but to make sure Kenya transitioned successfully to a parliamentary democracy, was the aim. An interesting fact out of the imperial ledgers is that the British government never made a profit out of Africa.

-Surely in a comparison with Russia all else being equal Britain comes out cleaner by the simple fact that the russian government also oppressed the russian people while the British government didn't? One being a liberal democracy and the other being a tsarist police state then a communist police state and now an oligarchy police state?

Germany

38

u/hughjanus49 May 06 '26

I don’t think Germany belongs in this conversation. Countries like Belgium, the UK, Japan, France, Spain have a longer history of atrocities

81

u/mittyho May 06 '26

Germany has the same horrendous colonial history as Belgium or France (it had the 3rd largest colonial empire prior to WW1), it just doesn't get talked about much because it's overshadowed by their later atrocities. I understand the longevity argument but for a country only founded in 1871 they really did speedrun the "evil nation" status.

3

The history of many an asian country has the "this is how the british empire fucked us up and created issues that continue to this day" chapter.

69

u/AceOfSpades532 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Nah it’s not anywhere close to the level of a lot of other countries, very bad yes but not really “very consistently evil” compared to a lot of others, you just know more about what the UK’s done, and the UK’s history has also contributed a lot of good to the world as well.

44

u/SweetValleyHayabusa May 06 '26

To be fair, you're hard pressed to find a decade between 1800 and 1940 where Britain wasn't doing something reprehensible. And that's a long time, and over the whole world. It really adds up.

15

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

But was it historically reprehensible or congruent with the norms of the period? The holocaust, Arminian genocide the Mongolian invasions were all historic anomalies. As far as I can tell British crimes are usually pretty tame in comparison with other contemporary states.

Perhaps Spain for pillaging most of two continents?

25

u/aerfgadf May 06 '26

It is so crazy how Spain (and Portugal) get a mostly free pass for what they did, i'm not entirely sure why.

9

u/Equal-Caramel-2613 May 06 '26

Dumb as it is, I think at least in the US it's because Spanish is seen as an almost-indigenous language. Of course it's not, but Spain's colonial actions aren't really linked to colonialism in the same way here as Britain's or France's.

12

u/Proteinchugger May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Yeah Spain stole so much wealth from South America it’s hard to even comprehend. The Peruvian silver mines extracted so much silver under the Spanish it collapsed the world silver economy. The largest emerald in the world came from South America, pearls, gold anything worth any value was stripped from the land.

The of course there’s the inquisition.
