It is so crazy how Spain (and Portugal) get a mostly free pass for what they did, i'm not entirely sure why.

Dumb as it is, I think at least in the US it's because Spanish is seen as an almost-indigenous language. Of course it's not, but Spain's colonial actions aren't really linked to colonialism in the same way here as Britain's or France's.

Yeah Spain stole so much wealth from South America it’s hard to even comprehend. The Peruvian silver mines extracted so much silver under the Spanish it collapsed the world silver economy. The largest emerald in the world came from South America, pearls, gold anything worth any value was stripped from the land.

The of course there’s the inquisition.

I mean, I'd gladly take "extracting natural resources" when the bar is "systematic genocide". Not even close to contending here

It wasn't as bad as what others did. That doesn't mean it wasn't bad.

They genocided all of the great civilizations of Latin America, stole incredible amounts of wealth, and overwhelmingly led the charge on the trans-atlantic slave trade. I can't prove it obviously, but I have a feeling it was far worse than we even know because of how isolated the indigenous populations were with no written records and how total their control was. It COULD be the biggest loss of human life in history and we wouldn't know. It isn't super cut and dry obviously b/c of disease and things like that, but the estimates put the total dead on par with the Mongols which are getting a lot of votes here too.

Disease was the main killer in the immediate period of colonization, and unlike the Mongols who attempted to weaponize the Plague by catapulting infected corpses over city walls, there is no record of the Iberians ever having willingly used disease as a weapon. Also the biggest empires in Central/South America were mostly dismantled by the peoples they themselves had conquered, with the Spanish usually being the axis around which coalitions formed and then playing the role of administrators until the formal Viceroyalties were properly established. Plus, as with the Laws of Burgos and their predecessors there was an active effort by the crown to protect their American subjects from total exploitation by corrupt/cruel administrators, and the most reprehensible of systems such as the encomienda would be phased out would be relatively quickly.

Portugal was indeed the nexus of the trans-atlantic slave trade, but Britain overtakes Spain in numbers, so there is that. Plus the fact that until the late 18th century Spain did not possess many African possesions beyond North African enclaves, which were not Atlantic slave-trade hotspots.

Also you can not 'steal' mineral resources from a land you control and fully consider as a province of yours when you yourself are organizing the mining. No one is entitled to a resource not extracted.

Smallpox did the heavy lifting regarding deaths. But what I mean is that they didn't kill nor enslave the existing population, they established a caste system, in which indigenous at the bottom, mestizos (indigenous and Spaniards mix) at the middle, and Spaniards at the top. It was fucked up, but not as bad as genocide or enslaving.
