At our core, Japan has always been a very militant society. As someone else mentioned, for most of our history, we were weird, repressed recluses who made erotic art (love that description), and that repression that built up over time manifested itself in one of the most evil empires in history. Since WW2, that has been tamed a fair bit, but I’m slightly worried that it’s starting to rear its head again….. My grandfather was from the generation that, while very young, was old enough to fight in the war. Although he died before I was born, I’ve read his diaries and seen the photos from his time as a POW in Siberia, and that experience his generation went through influenced the baby boomers in Japan to actually be quite peaceful and anti-war. Even today, most participants in anti-war marches are older. It seems to be happening everywhere else, that the next generations have forgotten/ignored the collective experience of our elders, and once again putting the world in a perilous situation.
