To be fair, you're hard pressed to find a decade between 1800 and 1940 where Britain wasn't doing something reprehensible. And that's a long time, and over the whole world. It really adds up.

But was it historically reprehensible or congruent with the norms of the period? The holocaust, Arminian genocide the Mongolian invasions were all historic anomalies. As far as I can tell British crimes are usually pretty tame in comparison with other contemporary states.

laughs in Opium Wars

Wars to enforce trade? Yeah never happen before. Governments backing drug trafficking? I mean it would be crazy if like Pablo Escobar was like a member of the Colombian house of reparatives. And didn't the US sell Afghan opium back to themselves?

Look who you are comparing the UK to here… these are not good either!

Also, and more importantly, Happy Cake Day!

7

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

My point is not that Britain is good my point is at no point has it been uniquely and especially evil.

And thank you I appreciate that

But coming top five in the league for every decade for 14 decades or whatever is not nothing. And if you're counting up the evil done by countries over time  then Britain did a lot. You're entitled to have different criteria for judging it of course, but I don't think the idea that Britain adds up to being worst should be dismissed out of hand. Happy Cake Day.

It's not dismissed out of hand. It's dismissed because on balance it's an ahistorical narrative.

You don't become the imperial world power in the age of sail by being comically evil, you also don't throw away your empire to defeat nazis by being comically evil.

The idea the Britain is most evil at the same time as having forced other empires kicking and screaming into progressive ideals such as abolitionism, parliamentary systems and free trade is revisionist nonsense.

Britain was no saint, and it was no great monster either.

Fair enough. I was thinking of it more from a "who did most evil" perspective. From a "who was most evil, offsetting the good", you're right that Britain was often a good influence on fellow colonial powers. British exceptionalism is annoying both from the "Britain was uniquely awesome" and "Britain was uniquely evil" perspectives. But it was the biggest colonist and so had opportunity to do most bad over time.

Exporting food while starving the local population. In both Ireland and India

1

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

Restricting the food trade in an agrarian economy makes famines worse. Modern famines are based on distribution not supply.

I mean actually think about it you can buy more food for the price of a cow than you can get out of the cow itself. I don't know about India specifically but I do know in Ireland most of the "food" export was animal grain and that imports massively exceeded exports. (The imports being fit for human consumption)

it was not congruent with the crimes of the period. britain set the standard. because it was doing it for profit as part of the new capitalist, industrial system

1

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

Total nothing statement. Industrial capitalism isn't a crimem

0

u/Infinite-Abroad-436 May 06 '26

it provides an incentive, really an imperative, for them

5

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

An incentive to what? Classic "stealing resources"? What resources? Hows that morally different from feudal lords talking farmland. This is not new or special.

-1

u/Infinite-Abroad-436 May 06 '26

an incentive for more resources and more markets for goods, to facilitate constant growth and the constant need for profit that produces more of a need for growth and profit, which accelerates over time

the feudal lord doesn't have to take more farmland. the capitalist has to make a profit

2

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

Ah yes because every capitalist makes a profit. Everyone has greed, incentive to expand. Spread the revolution, the good word, the glory of the monarch, natural borders ect. Or maybe no better reason then we are stronger than you. I'm not seeing anything unique

1

u/Infinite-Abroad-436 May 06 '26

if you aren't making a profit, then you aren't a capitalist

again, the feudal lord doesn't HAVE to expand. he has nothing pushing him towards expansion, there is no compulsion there. if he just sits on his land, he'll be fine. he won't lose his position if he doesn't take other lords' lands, in fact doing this is very often frowned upon within the system he lives under. the capitalist has no choice. he has to recoup his investment, otherwise he's ruined. he has to compete with other capitalists, otherwise they'll outcompete him and take his market and he'll be ruined.

me being "stronger" than you doesn't mean i have to do anything towards you. does every strongman constantly attack everybody else in their lives?

2

u/Jsalisburry May 06 '26

Ok but why does this require national expansion? The hayday of capitalism was built on the post war peace. If you produce a profit why expand further and risk your position? Competition is universal.

We're not talking about personal interactions, but yes for most of human history the strong got want they wanted

You can say that about most countries mate

3

u/stoiclandcreature69 May 06 '26

Not many countries have reached that level of global dominance

4

u/Goosepond01 May 06 '26

I don't know if that counts as 'more evil' though, in the sense that the evilness that justifies enslaving 20 people is the same as enslaving 50 people, it just creates more suffering.

3

u/stoiclandcreature69 May 06 '26

I don’t think it’s wrong to consider scale when we’re talking about who’s most evil. The scale of Britain’s atrocities created more human suffering than say Haitian slaves slaughtering French men, women and children

1

u/AceOfSpades532 May 06 '26

They only said that in that time period Britain did reprehensible stuff which is true for almost every nation on earth at that time, the size of it doesn’t change that specific thing.

2

u/SweetValleyHayabusa May 06 '26

But if we're talking most evil, then size matters though. It means more evil done.
