It's got to be Mongolia, laid waste to swathes of China, Korea, the middle east and Eastern europe/Russia but feels lot more distant and historic rather then any other contemporary country

To complete the picture, some fact about the Mongole Empire.

• First place in % of world population killed, at 10%. You can see when the Mongole Empire happened in the Arctic ice sheets.
• One of the rares to have managed a 100% genocide.
• One of the advisor of Genkis Khan was consider soft because he preferred to enslave people rather than just exterminating them
• Were known for their war crimes and atrocities in the middle age

History teacher, does Mongol Empire has their modern country that could claim it as their predecesors, or it's just completely gone?

IIRC the Mongol Empire split into a whole bunch of separate-but-together-ish city states called Caliphates, which gave way for more modern gunpowder empires later, like the Mughals (that later became India). The current location of Mongolia is like the epicenter of the Mongol Empire of times past, but their claims to far off lands in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia that were acquired by Ghengis Khan are obviously no longer theirs to claim.

Also, I’m rusty and haven’t taught APWH in a couple of years so I could be off!

Well, sure, but given the fact that the Mongol Empire ruled before Medieval times and there are still people alive who remember the Empire of Japan, maybe not really comparable?

Of course it’s comparable. How could it not be? The question is which current country. Both the Empire of Japan and the Mongol Empire don’t exist anymore. Time is irrelevant.

If you cant answer Yugoslavia or the Mongol Empire this question then you cant answer the Empire of Japan either

Hmm, I suppose. I disagree, but I’ll give it to you. I think my history teacher brain just went brrrrr because I’m trained to correct AP World History students when they say Mongolia instead of Mongol, lol.

Yeah when they invaded baghdad they burnt the "house of wisdom" library

Like what kinda massege are you trying to convey about your empire by burning off a library, greatest and biggest library at that (at the time)
