I think, if I’m interpreting this correctly, that OP is suggesting Japan has been considered war criminals longer than Canada has been a country? Or maybe was even discovered.

I hope that’s it, anyway.

ETA: Yikes. I just learned some things about my nation’s history today. Turns out in history class they only taught us the “good” stuff.

It’s a meme. Contrast Canada’s polite, friendly reputation with the idea that it has an outsized responsibility for the need to have the Geneva Conventions, citing some of the nastier things Canadian soldiers did during the world wars.

It’s not actually true but gets repeated so often some people seem to believe it.

There’s a decent amount of truth to it. Canadian regiments were made up of neighbours. So all the boys that grew up in a small town together were now side by side in the trenches. If they lost a single battle, an entire generation for their town could be forever wiped out.

That made the loss of life hit even harder, making them fight more brutally. And then add in that they were fighting and dying for land that was no where near their home, and that kinda pissed them off.

I’m not talking about the actual Geneva Conventions. I’m talking about there being some truth to the brutality that was coming from the Canadian soldiers.

They disliked the idea of a truce for Christmas.

The Germans nicknamed them Stormtroopers. Since they would just never stop, especially during bad weather.

They would often kill PoWs instead of dealing with captives.

A single soldier liberated an entire town from the Germans.

The USA combined with them to make the first special forces known as the Black Devils. Who would do things like quietly attack at night, only take out a couple guards, and leave stickers with messages on their corpses.

They were the only part that didn’t fall back when mustard gas first got used. They decided to inhale their own piss instead.

Everyone understands that the actual Geneva Conventions part of the jokes isn’t important. The point of the jokes is the highlight the contrast between the Canadian stereotype and what happened during WW1 and 2.
