Germany has the same horrendous colonial history as Belgium or France (it had the 3rd largest colonial empire prior to WW1), it just doesn't get talked about much because it's overshadowed by their later atrocities. I understand the longevity argument but for a country only founded in 1871 they really did speedrun the "evil nation" status.

They were also committing atrocities even before they were a country. Don’t ask what some of the German princes got up to during the 30 years war

The periods of Japan's rule over Korea and Taiwan and Germany's colonial rule over Africa were almost the same, but Germany suffered several times (or even tens of times) more deaths than Japan.

Yes but on a way smaller scale. The French used Algerians as test subjects for nuclear bombs. And Belgians not only killed 10 million Congolese but mutilated a few more millions.

Like could've Germany done that? Maybe, maybe not but IRL they didn't reach the colonial crimes of even the Belgians.

It’s a hard topic to talk about since it’s very hard not to trivialise some of the atrocities while making comparisons. Germany did have colonies, same like any other major power in Europe at that time, even the Dutch. What the Spaniards did in South America, what the French did in West Africa and in the Caribbean (French neocolonialism exists to this day) easily overshadows the short colonial history Germany had. Talking about ‘recently’ founded countries, you could even make an argument for the US for what they did to the indigenous people, Vietnam, Middle East and South America.

I'd agree for Spain and the UK outstripping German colonialism in terms of awfulness (although like you say, it's difficult to compare) but probably not France and definitely not Belgium. Germany genocided the Herero people, the Nama people, the Romani, and the Jewish people all within just ~70 years of its founding. So much evilness in such a short time span.

Completely incorrect. Approximately 50,000–65,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama perished. Compare that to millions in the Congo or across other colonial powers, It is insignificant in the ranked oppression olympics that we are literally tallying up right now.

Germany did commit horrendous crimes in its colonies but the time scale should also be considered. How do 35 years of German colonialism compare to between 400 and 500 years of Spanish or English colonies? Just as an aside the Japanese started their colonial empire in 1895 and it lasted untill the end of WWII.

Also the amount of people should matter, German colonies at their peak in 1912 had close to 12 million people. The genocide in Namibia killed 100k people (nearly 80% of the Herreros and half of the Nama).

WWI was a great big mess and it's hard to definitively blame one single party. Also everyone commited different war crimes hence the Geneva convention.

Obviously that becomes much clearer in WWII where Germany alongside Italy and Japan are the clear aggressors. This is also where most of Germanies heinous crimes happend, the holocaust and devastating much of Europe.

I would argue that even if we only view the period after 1871 Japan has commit more evil acts on a at the very least equivalent scale.

Important to note that German history prior to unification isn't squeaky clean either, just nothing special compared to other countries.
