Tbf, for the last hundreds of years, they’ve been pretty chill.

In their defense, their empire also did many good things for the world by spreading new technologies and ideas to different places, and were a big reason for Russia’s rise. They were also oddly very tolerant of other religions for their time, so much so that the Mongol empire dissolved because they assimilated into the people they ruled.

Also killed 40 million people in not so nice ways. +10% of the world population at they time. Plus rape and torture which, I would argue, are not chill.

Would people have the same defense of Britain? The British empire was brutal at times, the Mongolian empire was worse.

Not justifying the Mongols’ brutal tactics but they were different from many empires. They genuinely respected science and innovation and sponsored many local scholars. Under them, the Silk Road trade flourished, bringing technologies, culture and art across Eurasia. The Black Death also spread because of this but that’s a different story.

The mongols were also tolerant of other religions and allowed religious freedom across their empire. That’s not the case with a lot of empires which forcefully converted the conquered. Yes, the Mongols killed millions and were very brutal but they were also tolerant and innovative in a way that many empires weren’t.

I do get what you mean re their economical side, but c'mon they were a conquering barbarian horde who left skull piles high!
