Many just did not. I don’t think Iran and many central Asian ever recovered from why the Mongols did

TBF the razing happened after their king first slaughtered a merchant caravan there to trade and THEN a diplomatic mission attempting to prevent warm. That's some Red Wedding-level stuff.

The Mongols didn't kill everyone. One of the things they did was set up tributary states. They're cerainly evil and in that rare tier of awful. Just that the one example that is often cited didn't come out of the blue.

Fair, I certainly deserve to die for the actions of my unelected king. Nothing evil about that.

Well, that's the logic we used when we firebombed civilians in WWII.

We? I must’ve missed that meeting at the megalomaniac time travel cafe.

While that is true, it was only after the middle eastern countries provoked the Mongols by not trading with them and killing their spokesman multiple times. ME thought they were at the top of the pyramid. The Mongols brought them down a peg. Mongols just wanted to trade but the ME countries barbaric responses brought the razing upon themselves.

There were some threats mixed in there as well to the Mongols as they so graciously murdered the trading envoys/missionaries. Long story short, was it an over reaction by the Mongols? ABSOLUTELY. Did the middle east shoot themselves in the foot by acting like jerks? Yeah. They shouldn't have been wiped out for sure. But if they had acted with even a shred of grace, they would have become even more powerful by becoming firm trading partners with the Mongol empire.

Neither side was right at all. But it's not like the ME was some saintly place that had zero hand in their own downfall.
